I was able to quit the chase. My first college graduate job in 1996 paid $18.5k per year....those bastards. I said forget this, and went out on my own at 30yo. I crushed it for 14 years, thought I needed 10MM, then started hating my work, so I cut the goal to 5MM, and then as 5 approached I got close enough and said f-it, ill figure it out, and pulled the rip cord at 44yo. Now i do what i want when i want and can't figure out why everyone else is so obsessed with more more more. I sure as heck have no idea how anyone works past 55yo. Buy a ferrari, buy 3 houses....go ahead, all you are really buying are maintenance projects that suck the fun away. Been there, done that, pass. Here are 3 facts....once you have about 2MM+ for each person in your household, your lifestyle is more or less maxed out. The extra numbers offer you almost nothing in return for your time. Number 2... every single thing you will ever purchase in your life, or have purchased is future garbage, I dont care how special you think it is (except maybe gold bullion or a fancy diamond, or other cash like commodity), and 3.... the only difference between $2+MM and $100MM is private air travel, period, the end. If you can get happy to fly business class or premium economy, you can probably retire tomororw. If private air travel is your only option for happiness, then good luck, you will never ever get there.

Coworkers that cry about every detail of a company to other coworkers but won't talk to people in charge crack me up. All stressed and butt hurt over every detail that doesn't even affect their job. Just make your money and use that tool to better your personal life. A job is just a tool and idiots get all emotional over it.

This is so true and exhilarating. If you work in a large organization remember you are there to follow the already laid out processes and workflow aka status quo. If you are earning good don't beat yourself for correcting someone up down or on next lane.

Excellent discussion! Glad you mentioned being calm in situations. I built high-rise buildings for years and there were often situations that tested one's reaction. As a leader, everyone looks at you for your expressions, emotions and ultimately, answers. If you roll on the ground, kick and scream at every little issue that arises, don't consider yourself a leader. Anyone can do that. Happens in the office as well.

Valuable advice. I discovered these ideas last year while banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why we didnt fix issues with obvious solutions. Realized the solution was to stop caring as much. Simultaneously, my co-workers now like me more and I like my job more now that I understand I dont matter! 😊

So true!! Years ago, I told people I couldn’t wait to retire so I could go to gym everyday and become fitness instructor because it’s my passion and entertainment. Work really burned me out. Co workers rolled their eyes and one person was mocking me by pretending walking like a very old person with a cane!! A few months after that mocking session, I went to gym daily, got my six pack abs and become fitness instructor- while still working 9-5 job and a single Mom. I also managed to become a Millionaire that makes life even more enjoyable. Turned out, managing time & energy is not that hard if you really want it. Don’t wait until you retire to start living, do it now. I listen to people related Law of Attraction for inspiration, and it works very well for me.

Idk but it feels like yes you are really just a little part of whole organization where there is no room for you to be you, you can be just another human who can behave as machine. Like you literally don't have control over your work life which obviously means your whole life too. As you can't do WFH, you can't do work on your own terms. Just killing the uniqueness and fiery nature of a person. And be obedient.... that's what we are taught in school...huhh.

What he's saying is fine, but there's a nuance and a line that needs to be considered that he's not explicitly stating. The reality is that no one is truly your friend at work. Many people will present themselves as your friend and could betray you because you never truly know what they're thinking. When your 'friends' see you succeeding, they might become jealous and use everything they know about you against you. So, it's important to be very cautious about opening up to work friends. Most people aren't looking for love or friendship in the workplace because you never know what kind of jealousy you might arouse or if someone might betray you. All of this should be taken into consideration. And while he says you should be friendly with everyone, it's important to maintain professional boundaries.

I'm 53 and found everything here to be accurate. I don't go "all out" anymore. I should have led a department by now based on that old strategy. I think this corporate climate is also mirroring our nation too. Only the upper 1% get the leadership roles. It's all a boys club.

These are great stories. The best way to be at office is to be robotic. Be a greyrock basically. I used to work in the US and found it suffocating. I am back home in India now and surprisingly it's not that suffocating here and I have found people make some risque jokes. But it's always better to keep it very professional and boring.

Person can be experienced and knowledgeable but may not share that to wider audience. It could be blog, linkedin, youtube, github which would make that explicitly visible. It needs additional work, so it's kind of creation of personal brand, just need to be aligned with natural interests.

In 20 seconds this is so good. Be authentic and your real self as that is actually your personal brand. Love it. But maybe HR says you need to build it because if most people are to be their authentic selves - they will not make it or progress in the workplace. So they are actually saying 'Build a fake personal brand' that matches x, y and z good qualities so you can advance!
