Nice! First time I see someone with the Talo GP100 MC. Are you more comfortable with the regular MC wooden grip?

Excellent catch - correct, that is a Talo GP100. You will notice I also mix in a "normal" MC in .357/.38 from time to time as well but my main is the Talo version. I have found that I seem to shoot better but just the little bit more weight out in front on the barrel from the full underlug that the Talo version provides. The "normal" MC has a cut underlug and (for me) it moves faster between targets but even with 110PF factory ammo, I still have to settle it a little more on rapid shots as compared to the Talo. I usually run big fat recoil absorbing Hogues (that have the blue gel in the backstrap) on guns but it was done more for commonality - so my S&W and Ruger revolvers feel the same when I am using them for competition. As this season has gone on, I wanted to go back to the regular MC wood grips to see how they felt and so far, I am really enjoying them. I am a strong handed reloader, so for me the wooden grips are just flat out faster for me to get the gun open, empty, loaded, and into action again. Hogues are grippy which in most cases is great except when you need to break your grip a bunch of times in a stage to reload with a revolver. Go back through my videos for more good Talo videos - WV Championship and Rust Belt were both with the Talo GP100. Great spot and thanks for the comment and feel free to ask any questions!

@@RootinTootinRevo I'mma watch all your videos for educational purposes. I'd like to start practicing IDPA rev and I think I prefer Ruger cylinder release, because you can pretty much push the button and the cylinder at the same time and it pops out. Since you use both, do you ever push Smiths and slide Rugers by accident? What holster and speedloader holders do you use for the GP100?

Anyone who shoots revolver is happy to welcome others! Once you run it at a match the first time, you will either hate every waking second of it or it will grab you and you are hooked. Shooting revolver is a lot more "complicated" than I expected when you get into the details - like cylinder release, grips, gun weights, gun reliability, etc. The very basics though for when you start out are to remember to count to 6 over and over again, make your shots count since makeup shots sometimes are not possible or are not worth it. Along with that is reloading - figuring out how you want to reload. I do a strong hand reload - it just fits me and how I shoot. Lots of other guys who are much faster than me do weak handed reload and they could not imagine doing strong handed. Once you have those couple of items down and put a match under your belt, then you can get into the nitty gritty of things like lightening trigger pulls, figuring out what cylinder release you like, grips, sights and all that. This may sound strange, but the Ruger cylinder release is easier to hit and open - you just press in, and the cylinder will open, the S&W is smoother, and I think easier to open but since you are pushing forward it is easy to not quite get it pushed far enough and your cylinder doesn't quite want to open yet. I highly recommend you put revolvers in your hands and see what fits and what works for you - for your hand size, how you plan to reload, whether you are left or right-handed, etc. I am in my third season of only shooting revolver and I have not accidentally opened a cylinder when I did not want to on Ruger or S&W. The releases are placed well enough and if your thumbs are where they should be, you should not be that close to them to accidentally hit either one - even if you have a bad grip or are under heavy recoil. Holsters and speedloaders are easy for both Ruger and S&W. Speedbeez and/or Comp-Tac for holsters for both the revolver and the speedloaders. Revo-gear and Midwest Competitions Works also make nice speedloader holders but Speedbeez is a great place to start. For speedloaders the go to is Safariland Comp III. They are tall so easier to grab, they release well, and are pretty tough. If you watch anything and have questions - by all means ask. Also going to your local IDPA match and seeing if there are any revolver guys there - hit them up and talk to them too. By far, in IDPA and other shooting sports, revolver shooters have been some of the most welcoming and friendly folks I have ever run into.

@@RootinTootinRevo I've been told by an expert IDPA REV shooter to always count your rounds as you said and to never stay with an odd number of extra shots, or you'll have to alpha-reload-alpha every third target instead of reloading during transitions. My previous questions actually was, since you race with both, if you ever get confused and try to open a Ruger cylinder as if it were a Smith and vice versa.
@RootinTootinRevo
@RootinTootinRevo 21 күн бұрын
That is absolutely excellent advice. Depending on where you are in the country (as in what IDPA Area you are in), if you are shooting a speedloader gun (SSR) you may be able to dump live rounds on the ground out of the revolver without incurring a penalty. I would advise asking the match director or send a message to your Area Coordinator to verify. That helps with the count too, so you do not have to dump extra shots on target with a danger of hitting a non-threat. On stages that I find are going to be complicated or have a lot of shots where I may or may not need extras (like pieces of steel), I usually break the stage down and try to find hard reload points. By that, I mean, points where no matter what I have in the cylinder, I should be full before the next target/array. So if I bomb some steel plates, have an extra reload and then am coming into a 3 target array with 4 rounds in the cylinder, I know that I should be initiating the reload before I get there no matter what. One of the prime-time revolver skills that pays off the most is learning to make the reloads work in the movement of the stage - we have to reload so much, one of the best ways to gain time is to reload on the move (when legal) and be doing those 2 things at once. I actually have not mistaken one for the other in switching back and forth. To me - the revolvers themselves are just too different and I have not made the mistake in a match. The Ruger trigger pulls are all much longer than S&W, the Rugers balance differently in the hand a little bit, the feel is just different so even under stress, my subconscious brain has not mixed them up.

Stage 2 of the classifier did not look correct.
@RootinTootinRevo
@RootinTootinRevo Ай бұрын
Good catch - there was debate in the squad as well. The Standard Classifier is rare to find anymore. Only the third time I have shot it since 2017 and most other folks had never shot it or maybe shot it once. Back in 2017 when the Standard was updated/made, IDPA rules dictated that you could be penalized for not moving when it was required in a stage. Most of us at that time learned to do the mini-foot shuffle to still have it count as movement. Since that time, they rules have been updated that you can't be forced to move on a stage but the Standard Classifier instructions were not updated. We can't be forced to move anymore so most folks on Stage 2 in String 2 and String 3 took a step or two towards the targets and then engaged flat footed or just stayed stationary and fired from the start position.

@@RootinTootinRevo Agreed. On Stage 2-String 2 I "modify" it also by drawing at the beep, start moving but save my shots for as close as possible. Same thing in reverse on String 3 where I start shooting immediately while reversing. Trust me, most of my shots are as close to P3 as possible. LOL!

Nice shooting Lee! All part of the game , we take the good with the bad and the ugly , but what makes a true champ/competitor , is exactly what you did , you faced every stage and as a new start and executed as well as you could in that moment ! This game always comes down to who makes the less errors , and sometimes equipment is a part of that , it was an absolute pleasure watching you shoot the revolver ! That in itself is a whole different skill and beast to tame, I enjoyed watching you sling lead with that ruger! I have no doubt you’ll come out swinging next match !

Thanks a bunch! I have told Jesse this too but in competition shooting (for me) it is much easier to see the bad and I let that outweigh the good. I need to do better at highlighting what I do right in my match summaries - not just what I do wrong when I look at an overall match. Right back at you - it was a pleasure watching you run stages. Your movement is amazing to watch - so many guys quick step between points of cover, you almost bound/leap covering huge chunks of ground fast. It is tons of fun to watch young guys like you, Jesse, and Adam just tear chunks out of a stage. We had a wonderful squad - already looking forward to the next one!

@@RootinTootinRevo you know , you may not believe it but I paddle that same boat with you my man , you’re absolutely right , that’s actually the most important part , I say that bc after WV I really beat myself up hard , I was really disappointed , I thought I shot one of my worst matches but no one else thought so , Bob had a long talk with me and told me he sees how I carry every stage forward and how it gets in my way , and he was right , so I shot rust belt with that attitude, I made sure to only worry about my stage plan and executing it as best I could .. I actually didn’t worry about my time not once this match only the next stage and it really helped , wasn’t happy with my performance here either as I had to many malfunctions imo , but I have to take that very advice and make the good an even bigger focus than the bad. I know you’re gonna kill it next match! Are you getting procedurals for dropping rounds?
@RootinTootinRevo
@RootinTootinRevo 2 ай бұрын
Excellent question! IDPA has some issues with consistent ruling across all Areas of the country. In the Area I mainly shoot in (PA, WV), the ruling has been that live rounds ARE NOT considered a "loading device" and are therefore legal to dump on the ground. Now when I am using my 625 with moon clips and dump a live round - that would be a PE since the moon clip is considered a "loading device" like a magazine. I have shot matches in MD where I can't dump live rounds though because the ruling in that Area is that the live round is considered a "loading device". I have talked to guys that have shot in some of the western states that have said the ruling in some places out there is that a live round is a "loading device" and have gotten PEs at high tiered matches out there for dumping. To be safe - at every major shoot I go to, I seek out the MD or if the AC is present and verify beforehand if it is legal to do so at the match.

Thanks! It is a labor of love and frustration - it takes a lot of practice, a lot more than I ever did with semiautos but I recommend everyone give it a try. You might just get hooked. BUG is a tough division too - I have tried BUG-R at a match with an SP101 and it made for a long day. I have had so many folks come up to me at matches and say "I have this (GP100, 686, 66, etc) at home, I would love to run it for IDPA." It is kinda scary at first but you just have to go into it knowing you are not going to be fast and you can't go at semiauto speed. Be safe, make your hits and practice some reloads and see what you think. Investment - if you already have the gun is not that much. Safariland speedloaders are 20 some bucks each and you would need 4. A Speedbeez holster and 3 speedloader carries would be around 200 bucks. An unintended bonus I have noticed so far is that when I go back to a semiauto it is like shooting it on easy mode. The long/heavy revolver trigger pull makes everything else just seem amazing.

Nice , great job , you do a great job with a Wheel gun . I shoot IDPA too, so far SSP and CDP. I want to shoot wheel guns but I don’t have a proper wheel yet. Years ago as a LEO I was a firearms instructor and law enforcement, we carried Glocks , but our corrections officers carried revolvers , so as instructors we had to be proficient in them , I always had fun with it . I also carried a S&W 340 SC as a backup for 9 years till they made me transition to a G26.

Thanks! I started with SSP and then migrated to CO. I tried REV on a whim and was pretty much hooked from the start. It is by far one of the most rewarding - and frustrating - competitive shooting things I have done. Once you work out kinks in your gun and gear setup, the frustration goes down and it is very much a mental game. Investment is not too bad to get started and the competitive revolver shooting community is very welcoming - one of the friendliest groups I have been around. A 340 SC is a fantastic backup!

@@jasestrong Barrel length for revolver in IDPA is 4.25". You can shoot under that but over that is not allowed (for big matches). If you wanted to run a longer barrel at a local match, I am almost positive that they will allow you to run whatever you would like. A local club I shoot at has had a guy running a 5" barrel 625 at several matches. IDPA revolver is broken up into 2 sub categories - Stock Service Revolver (SSR) and Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR). SSR is for speedloader guns only, 43oz or under, stock cylinder release, and a comfortable 105 minimum power factor on your ammo - examples here would be a GP100 or S&W 686 shooting .38 Special. ESR is for moonclip (mainly) guns, 50oz or under, allowed to have a modified cylinder release, with a more stout 155 minimum power factor on your ammo - examples here would be a GP100 in 10mm shooting .40S&W or a S&W 625 shooting .45ACP. Your choice comes down to do you want harder/slower reloads but less recoil or do you want faster reloads but harder recoil? I have tried both and for me personally, I prefer the lighter recoil for major matches but run ESR guns at a lot of locals.
