I feel like I’m in the twilight zone reading these comments. 15-20yr ago you couldn’t give those 498T’s away. Now that they’re “iN tHe cUsToMs” everyone forgot about how muddy and flubby they sound? 😂

I believe the reason Gibson amps were voiced to be so bright is because Gibson guitars have an inherently thicker, warmer tone than most other guitars. The extra brightness really adds chime and character to Gibson guitars.

498t is my go to pup. I've had the JB in some guitars and it's a good pup...to me it sounds a little 'bigger' and impressive at first, but the 498t just has a better midrange and it cuts thru and it has that ACDC scream aplenty. It may not be the best sounding pickup ever in separated A/B tests, but overall, it never fails. It's just the perfect rock/classic metal pickup.

I tested those myself... the jb is bright but muddy and funny mids, like everyone knows. The gibson ist maybe more balanced but on high gain it can get grainy so to say... if you are broke though, for 50 bucks/euros + shipping you could get an Irongear dirty torche... insane pickup, in the same ballpark of those to. Maybe ballsy... in the low mids but I enyoy it more than the jb. The 498t are uninstalled... cos they are chrom, and I'm figuring out what guitar im gonna build next, or mood.

I had a set of Duncan's the JB in the bridge and 59 in the neck of an old Epihone Les Paul copy, and that thing sounded so rich after I strummed my first opened major chord.

It's not a copy if it's from Epiphone lol. Dude who invented/designed that guitar literally built his first designs and prototypes at the Epiphone factory (after work hours, iirc they were friends with the manager/owner or something) before going to show it to the Gibson people.. Those people rejected him and made fun of him ("broomstick guy") until that Fender guy was finishing his electric guitar design and they freaked out about not getting a market share when it was successful. If anything, an Epiphone Les Paul would be more of the real thing because that's literally the place where it came into existence.

The JB definitely sounds better and has more cut with the higher gain settings and that’s what it was designed for and what made it famous

Clean to crunch the difference is barely perceptible. In heavier distortion though I do think the JB is a little brighter and clearer and the 498t is a little darker and smoother. I prefer the 498t but they're both great.

I've always thought the the 498T and the JB sounded really similar and this further confirms it. IMO it's not really worth the upgrade. You can say what you want about their guitars, but I think it's safe to say that Gibson knows how to make a humbucker.

Cool video. The 498T and the SD JB are very close. Me and my buddy AB'd them to death. The 498T is one of the best pickups ever made and I would take it over the JB any day. With that said, the SD JB is a great pickup also.

The sound quality are both great, but the difference is negligible. While seasoned players may be able to identify the difference, the audience likely won't.

Just depends on the style. The riff at 3:25 was way better with the JB, the 498t was better on the others. A mix of each in a two guitar context would slap.

so i went and bought one after watching this vid, i restored it and it's great. i copper shielded the pick guard and the inside cavity and there's literally no noise or hum whatsoeve, the shielding worked amazing on this. then i set it up with nashville tuning because johnny marr did that with his coronet, and it's super cool for that especially if you put it through loads of delay and chorus to do that whole thing..

The JB is brighter and looser in the low end. The 498t is tighter and more balanced, with a slight scoop.

Agree - Great video. I love the 490R and 498T combination vs Seymour Duncan JBs, to me they just seem more dynamic and versatile across the rock/blues spectrum.

To be honest.. You are very lucky that Gibson still put the same pickups in the studio as what you get in a 6k custom shop les paul custom.... The 498T/490R pickups are very versatile whilst being hot enough for metal shred heads

Gibson are very expensive (to me) guitars with high-end hardware. I don't know why anyone would automatically assume they need "uprgrading". The only thing I would do is maybe replace one pair of volume and tone knobs with series/parallel switches for more diverse tones.

Hey dude, where can I get that same desk you have behind you? also. 498t is my all time favorite. played 57 classics for years then switched back to 498t. it might be because my first les paul had a 498t in it and its engrained in my mind. I do however like a 57 classic in the neck. I think that a couple pickups sound better to me then the 498t but the 498 feels better.

i have the 490/498 pickups in my CS Les Paul Custom. The 498 is just hot and sharp for my taste. I'm going to put a set of Slash 2.0 in the guitar and hope that solves it.

Interesting video, Jimmy Page often used a Telecaster in the studio, but on stage he needed the Les Paul. What I do in those cases is use a compressor before the distortion so you reduce the dynamic range and the sound is more forceful. Greetings

If you want to drastically change the voicing of your guitar, you need to change the space between the bridge and the P.U. Results may vary though. It is as drastical as picking/strumming near the bridge or closer to/on the fretboard. My personal point of view is that changing the same type of P.U. for another doesn't have enough effect to justify the purchase and bother doing the mod.

No offense intended, but I don't know how you can evaluate a pickup by playing it with the gain on 11. All I hear is clipping. But to be fair, I'm not into that head-banger thing.

So IMO the JB is probably the greatest pup you’ll find to replace any pup you don’t like. But would never consider replacing the 498 set with anything at all. I’ve had a less Paul studio that I’ve had for 25 years back in my younger days. I went through the pick up stage thinking I could make it sound better and going through about 10 different sets of very expensive pick ups I always ended up going back to the original set and still to this day have it. Nothing was able to beat them.

I found that a Duncan Distortion gave me more of the sound and bite I wanted. That’s not to say I discarded the 498T; in fact, my daughter has an LP copy that is going to receive an upgrade with that pickup - easily increasing the guitar’s performance
