Hey there! Today I'm doing a direct comparison of a 1999 Gibson Les Paul Studio vs a 1990 Epiphone Les Paul Custom, both with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position!
I thought they both sounded great, but in the future I would like to do a 100% part for part comparison (ie. same pots + uncovered pickup etc), but this was definitely worthwhile anyways!
The song from the mix demo is "We Are The Sound" by Alexisonfire. It's been in my head every day for the last week so I kinda had to...

Both axes sound phenomenal, and the JB is a major reason why. One of the finest pickups ever created.

The Gibson sounded more open and the Epiphone sounded more focused. The JB is a great pickup.

The JB is pretty much unbeatable. The most popular replacement pickup ever produced, and for a very good reason.

Biggest difference here was the uncovered vs covered. While there is a tiny bit of top end cut off with a covered pickup the biggest difference comes from the coils sitting further away from the strings, not as hot...

Clean is better on the Gib, crunch et dirty are very close. Notice that a 1990 korean Epi might not reflect today's production.

hey Im first, I have no idea, I have a question don't you think the jb, is a little bit heavy or grunge for a les paul, it's almost as I'm hearing another kind of guitar, like a ibanez, or something, I want to upgrade my epi les paul, I was thinking about 59 or alnico pro II, what do you think?

LA L the JB is definitely high output and best suited for styles of music with a lot of gain. However it's not exclusive to them, it is called a "jazz bridge" after all. If you're looking for a more classic Les Paul tone tho, an alnico 2 pro will definitely get you there, where as a JB is more modern

Rezo Shelia hey there, I took it to a shop and had them cut it out from pickguard material, wasn't the cheapest but I'm sure you could go digging through some guitar forums to find something like it!

I could see the difference of them but I don't think it justifies the difference in price. Here in Brazil both are just too expensive for most of us. In comparison epiphones are for about 5 minimum wages and Gibsons for like 12. So... I think that's it lol

Ngl I got all 3 right. Kind of what I expected though. Idt you can really replicate a Gibson 100%

Going back to this video I definitely felt the same, I could hear the difference, but I'd say the biggest thing keeping an Epiphone from sounding close to a Gibson is the cheap electronics and pots. They just have this tiny inherent "plastic" sound to them

Simon Austin I actually think it’s the resonance of the Gibson body my Gibson is a lot more resonate than my epiphone

@@simonaustin1136 Not to mention the thick coating of plastic all over the guitar, but that doesn't keep me from loving my Epiphone! Thankfully they've started finishing them much thinner than they used to when I got mine back in 2008
