I created a polygon and applied a buffer to it. I needed to edit vertices on the polygon but the buffer did not update to the new shape. Is it possible to have the buffer update if the polygon shape changes?
@GISChops
@GISChops Ай бұрын
I’m not aware of anything that will automatically update a buffer when the source polygon changes. Maybe you could have an attribute rule that populated a field in the buffer layer then have a script buffer them again. 🤷‍♂️

Of course, I needed to do this the other day and couldn't figure it out with my limited Python Skills. The difference is that you were extracting the last word of a three-word string separated by two Dashes. My Parcel Number was the same, but if multiple mobile homes were on a parcel, a Fourth Word after a third Dash was added to represent a Mobile Home "Lot" on that Parcel. A Lot of land (parcel) used as a Mobile Home Park could have 100 Mobile Home "Lots" like parking spaces. So, my question was, how to extract a Fourth Word when one exists?
@GISChops
@GISChops Ай бұрын
That split tool returns a list, the [-1] is an index for that list that points to the last item. [-2] would be the next to the last item and so forth.

There is an attributes window in ArcMap too. desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/latest/manage-data/editing-attributes/editing-attributes-in-the-attributes-window.htm I have never needed to edit network routes, just the underlying network data. But the ArcMap attributes window still allows mass edits by selecting multiple features in the tree or all features by selecting the layer name in the tree.

I ran the enable COGO tool on my line feature class, then entered the subdivision boundary in the traverse tool. The bearings and distances are then stored in the fields the enable COGO tool created and the labels use those fields as well. Using a parcel fabric takes care of that for you if you want to go that route. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us :) A beginners question: in this context, if the I have a plan with buildings of the the same size within different blocks, I'd need to create lines just for one first set of buildings (one set of red lines in your layer for example) and then copy and paste using the help of the grid as you showed, right? I wonder what's your preferred way of working with the subdivision layer? How do you add or import the 'subdivision' layer usually? I see it shows values 0 to 1 in your table of contents. Thanks once more for the amazing content you bring!
@GISChops

Thanks for watching and commenting! And yes the method you described would be how I would create those identical buildings. I will sometimes use the mirror features tool if I get buildings that are the same but flipped or mirrored. I have to cut counties into Service Areas for Network Analyst Routing. When I encounter this problem with trying to cut down the road, I would drag the vertexes across the street and then use the Split Polygon Tool to trace the street edge. For large areas that need to be split by an Interstate, I would use Network Analyst Routing to draw a route line from one end of the county to the other and back. Once that looped path was exported to another feature class, I would split the line into North and South and then use Collapse Dual Lines To Centerline. By tracing the Split Polygon Tool along that centerline,, the entire county gets cut into North and South areas.
@GISChops
@GISChops Ай бұрын
I like your process! Thanks for commenting! You could actually right click your newly constructed centerline and choose Replace geometry, then you wouldn’t have to trace it. It can be a little finicky if your centerline has overlapping polygons, you might have to turn off polygon layers. I go into detail about the Replace Geometry trick in this video - Editing in ArcGIS Pro - Replace Geometry kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKXadn-ZgJ2Zj7M

At 5:30 how did you rotate without being over the green circle?
@GISChops

You can rotate by clicking and dragging anywhere on the feature - lines are trickier than polygons, you can click and drag on the inside of the polygon, but for lines you have to click right on the line. I believe the cursor changes to the rotate icon when you are on the feature.

Can you do a tutorial of how to re-project topographic data from surface to grid coordinates in PRO? I used to know several hacks that worked in 10.8, but not in Pro. Tin, XML, CAD, etc. The process of getting surface topo to show up correctly seems waaaaay too complicated and I hope wish there was more direction on how to do it in Pro. You would think they could make such a basic transformation straightforward.

I ran into the same issue. Another way to measure on the map is to use the draw widget. Within that widget there's a toggle to "show length measurement" (or area and perimeter if it's a polygon). The thing I don't like about the measure button on the map layout is the limitation on where you can put it. The button location is tied to tools layout you choose and you can't slide them around on the map.
