For the Queen to spend 2 hours of her very busy schedule talking with Billy after her mother died, that’s a rare honor. Of course Billy being extravagant wouldn’t understand this.

Petula mentioned she wanted to learn bass guitar. I saw she was coming to do Sunset at the Dupont Playhouse in my old hometown of Wilmington, DE. So I picked out a couple of basses and an amp and was all set to come down to offer a bass lesson. Unfortunately the show was canceled and Petula never showed up. Too bad, she might have one day given Carole Kaye a run for her money !!!

Feeling nostalgic as this was one of my mother's (RIP) favorite songs. I remember she played the old 45rpm record of this song (Petula Clark) over and over. In addition, the fact that realizing lately that this is one of the great John Williams' music and his longtime lyricist collaborator Leslie Bricusse made it even more meaningful for me.

I saw this movie as a teenager, when it first came out. Peter O'Toole taught me how you meet the woman you'll marry. It took me to my late 30s, but I learned the lesson well.

When this movie came out, I was the sort of shy, nerdy teenage boy who could identify with Peter O'Toole's character. And this movie made a deep, lasting impression on me: is this how you meet the woman you'll marry? And in my late 30s, this was pretty much how it happened. Until Ann passed away, she was my love, and my best friend. The songs from this movie, and particularly the Brookfield school song, still resonate with me.

I'm sorry for your loss, I can understand somewhat, I lost my wife, Julie six years ago. But it's lately that I've been able to listen to this song, because it's so poignant. However with your Ann and my Julie perhaps we can begin again. Cancel Reply Cancel Reply

London in the 1960s was a very vibrant place and the public spaces were well kept, clean and orderly. I wonder what Petula Clark thinks of London now. London is not London anymore.

I gather that domestic service for any of the aristocracy has always been like that; the imperious attitude of their employers is nothing to the snobbery bitching and backstabbing among their staff

I find that gay men fulfil the role for the royals that eunuchs had in the royal courts of the ancient world. No political threat to the power and position of their employers, with no families they can devote themselves to their role entirely.

Exactly so, in fact the poorest people of the UK are the monarchy's strongest supporters. But there's a lot more to it than that, as with the Tsar of Russia🙂

Goodbye Mr Chips is one of my favourite musicals. The story of love at its finest. And the performance of Peter O’Toole in the starring role along with Pet Clark was a wonderful combination of acting talent. This song and this classic film really does pull at the heart strings. Truly memorable and the songs of this lovely sentimental film will stand the test of time. RIP Peter, and thanks to Pet Clark for giving your fans such a legacy of songs to listen to over and over again. ❤

Over the years I’ve watched this at least 3 times. It’s wonderful that the dear Queen mother had someone who loved her and cared about her. Her family were quite hard and tough. Not like their mother at all. Those that joined the household and didn’t get on should have quietly left. Like in any job. I think prince charles has a heart of gold. Long May he get well and reign as king. ❤
