I'm just discovering this wonderful, bittersweet book after years of meaning to read it.The thing that struck me most about your video is that we both seem to have the same draw to the book:namely the character of the creature, which is too often overlooked.I relate so much to what you said about how you became attached to the creature because you felt sorry for him.The creature starts out good and he is very intelligent and articulate and curious and passionate about life in the beginning. But his hideous appearance and his painful rejection by everyone make him feel so worthless and unwanted and lonely that he,as you said, "turns evil".In the end,all he really wanted was a companion like himself, someone who understood what it was like to be lonely and devalued and rejected, and then Victor Frankenstein even refuses to make him him his soulmate, which must have driven him insane with loneliness and sadness and from there,of course, only tragedy and desolation result. It really is a cautionary tale about the evil and tragic consequences of labeling people freaks or monsters and depriving them of love and self-worth.The other thing that I really, really like about this book, which I'm so happy that you also touched upon,is that Mary Shelley really deserves to be recognized as a literary genius equal to her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.I'm really committed now to exploring her life and her development as a writer and her other work.Years ago I bought a biography of Percy Shelley called "Shelley:The Pursuit" by Richard Holmes but,for whatever reason,I never bothered to read it (I already have way more books than I can read in a lifetime, being a compulsive book-hauler).But I'm starting to read that because I don't yet have the biography of Mary Shelley, which is what I'm really psyched to get,and I'm learning that the lives of her and her husband, which I think provides part of the necessary background because the lives and love affair of Mary and Percy were so intertwined and their perspective on the world seems to have been so similar and so revolutionary that I don't think the two can be separated. What I'm starting to discover is that,I think,Victor Frankenstein is probably based on the less pleasant character traits of Percy, who was brilliant and ambitious and admittedly fascinating in his own right but who,it must be said, caused a lot of tragedy for Mary and her family by his blind selfishness and refusal to consider anything but his own personal agenda.I've watched a few documentaries on Mary Shelley's life in preparation for getting her biography and she clearly comes across as a woman of incandescent imagination and touching empathy.I am sure in my own mind that she created the Creature out of her own loneliness and desolation. This woman lost her mother at birth and was raised by a brilliant but distant father who taught her to be as brilliant as him but never really gave her any warmth or affection.Percy was the one person who came into her life who functioned as her soulmate, and they did truly love each other, but his narcissistic traits and insensitivity, most prominently his open infidelities with people like Clair Clairmont, plus the fact that Mary endured multiple out-of-wedlock pregnancies to children she became passionately attached to and then lost to fatal disease, caused her such sorrow, while Percy seemed not even to notice. He didn't mean to be cruel,he just was so self-absorbed that he could not see her pain, which must have been a crushing invalidation. But the point is this woman, while beautiful and no Frankenstein's Monster, knew what it was like to be disregarded,to be looked through,to be thrown away by the people she loved and looked up to the most. When she wrote the Creature, she was clearly writing from the heart.I know this might sound weird, but in an ironic way,the Creature was a more authentic soulmate for her than Percy. At least that's my opinion. She dreamed him up because she could find no other way to show the world her battered heart. All that said,I absolutely do NOT want to make Mary Shelley sound like a victim. She was a strong, determined, brilliant woman who endured and outlived her husband and lived to see her Frankenstein become a smash bestseller all over the world, which must have been such a joyous validation for her! She is a feminist icon, just like my beloved Bronte sisters and other 19th-Century revolutionary female writers! More people should know her story. So,in summation,I recommend getting the biography "Mary Shelley" by Miranda Seymour, which seems to be the definitive biography and which I am going to treat myself to next month as a self-bought Christmas present.I'm also going to treat myself to a DVD of the 2017 biopic "Mary Shelley",a movie which I am ashamed to say I ignored when it came out.The fascinating thing is that the actor playing Mary--Elle Fanning--is so young, but from the clips I've seen, seems to give a masterful and intelligent performance. For a girl from Georgia, her British accent is more authentic-sounding than a lot of American actors I know.Who knows, maybe she'll be the next precocious Mary Shelley! Well,I better wrap this up.I gush too much about the things I'm passionate about! But bravo and let's hope Mary gets more exposure to today's culture!

I watched your video just to see how other people reacted to the book, it’s one of the best books I’ve read and I was struggling to read the last couple of pages because my eyes were welling up, I suffer from progressive MS and the documenting of the awareness of declining neurological functions sounded like me talking to my neurologist, it cut close to the bone for me. Great video ❤

Your review of Amsterdam is so accurate: the ending is nonsense, the title doesn't comprises the core of the story, and all subjects never get to the point. Yet, there are some spots in the story that are worthy. So frustating to see a good idea poorly executed.

Love your video and your passion as always. I wanted to leave a comment here even if I have to confess I have a personal aversion to most kinds of psychoanalysis and, especially, to therapists, although I do realize that a minority of them might actually be doing something useful, at least in creating a framework of self-reflection simply by listening (typically, the more they talk, the worse they are). I also say this because I have at least 6 friends who came from their therapy sessions with their heads filled with even more bs than before…

Love the video! I read this book a while ago and I remember thinking that was good, but not life altering. However, years later I still catch myself thinking about the people in this story. The young newlywed who has to cope with dying and her deep love of Trader Joe's. And the producer who was such a jerk, but had this horrible loss he was still struggling to live with. And if a book sticks with you that hard, it must be something special.

Who is this book for? You literally described me. Another must read rec from you! The 5 stages of grief - yes, developed to help one deal with their own impending death! I learned this in researching for my own book... and the 5 stages don't always happen in the same order, and you can go back and forth between them and go through a stage more than once. Definitely going to be getting this one!! And Paris! You are so lucky to be travelling!

Haha - I was actually describing myself as well! 😬Thank you so much for your comment! I had no idea you could go back and forth between the stages, I feel like that’s what’s been happening to me. I always think I must be at the last stage after 10 years but it doesn’t always feel like it, so that explains it. Yess I’m so so happy to be traveling😍
