I haven't read it but this is a fabulous discussion. I love how you talk about the actual character rather than just the writing or the writer. I like to hear both but it's Unique that you talked about the character as well like they were a real person - which is a testament to the writing itself.

I chose Jane Eyre as my novel when my seventh grade English class (at the eighth grade honors level) did a unit on novels. It was a lot different than I expected, and I DNFed it after Chapter 35. Nineteenth century English-language literature has always been difficult for me, since it's usually so flowery and written in a much different style than I'm used to. I was also creeped out by how Mr. Rochester is old enough to be Jane's father, a feeling I haven't lost in all these years. Despite not finishing it, I scored an 82 on the test because I chose the essay portion to count for my main credit. The essay asked how Jane is an early feminist. I probably should attempt to reread it and finish it this time, though I don't think I'll suddenly start seeing Mr. Rochester in a radically different light.

How interesting! Thank you so much for sharing and so glad I’m not alone! Mr. Rochester is a total creep 🤣 Jane’s wonderful, but I don’t understand her choice and just find the whole thing very contradictory to what she’s supposed to represent. Amazing about the essay! I’d love to read it if you still have it.

“I’m not an angel!” that must have sounded pretty provocative at the time when she wrote that. Love it when the strong personality of an author comes through so clearly. Also - yes, a couple of times I’ve fallen asleep while listening to an audiobook ! I still have to read Jane Eyre, I can’t wait.

I absolutely agree about the spooky elements - I really loved the fact that it wasn’t just a romance novel, but it also had some gloomy parts too. Also, I think that what I personally found frustrating in the novel is Jane’s constant restraint. As for a person of 21st century, the novel is of course quite old-fashioned in many ways, so it’s hard to think that something that seems okay now was a big deal back then. But still, I do agree for a 100% that the book highlighted many feminist ideas which were certainly new for the society. And I simply loved the vlog bits of the video! It’s so cool to see someone’s journey through the book and listen to your impressions with every chapter 🖤

Heyy thank you so much! Just love your entire comment. I wasn’t expecting the spooky elements at all, it made the story even more compelling. Yeah, for sure, I think it was groundbreaking for the time period it was written in. Really glad you enjoyed the vlog, thank you for the thoughtful comment. 💛
