Here’s how the Cavalier Autonomous Racing car handled this overtaking scenario: - Coming into the overtaking zone, our perception system locks on to the opponent but has a slight error in predicting their trajectory as they exit turn 4. - No autonomous vehicle is immune to the mis-prediction of another agent’s behavior, so the motion planner evaluates (based on the incorrect prediction) that an outside pass is still possible if we accelerate now. - The car accelerates to 90 mph, closing the gap for an outside pass. - The planner quickly re-evaluates as the opponent veers towards the outside, making the pass unsafe. It slows down from 91 mph to 65 mph to avoid a certain collision. - It identifies that an inside overtake is still feasible, with the opponent staying on the outside line - and then executes the inside pass safely. - During the next lap, in a different part of the track - at the exit of turn 2, the planner applies what it learned from the turn 4 encounter; anticipating the opponent’s outside line and opting for a safe inside pass.

The Porsche 919 reached its limits due to the human body not being able to sustain the G Forces if I remember correctly. How Sick would it be to see a computer drive a car in ways the Human Body wouldn’t be able to handle. Like an A.I. Death Race, where the cars could potentially drive inverted with loops and get up to damn near 265 MPH on the straights. Speed Racer. I want Speed Racer.

Keep working on it. This won't qualify for Indy. As far as self driving goes, is this really helping? The only way computers will run cars on roads is if there are no human drivers. They are unpredictable. Thank you for this.

Strange that both cars made that same hard right turn toward barrier, at the same spot, on the blend-in from pits along straight section.

One car at a time, pretty cool technical trick, yeah sure. But when they tried a real multicar race at Yaz Marina (wasn't it?), the whole thing ground to a halt. And why would anyone want to watch, beyond the tech novelty?

I was thinking that they should test autonomous cars against race car drivers on a race track instead of letting Tesla's kill people in Public Highways.

I've already been thinking that they do this in racing. Plus, the rules in racing has made it boring to watch. This will completely kill the sport.

What a difference from last time I saw them run at Indy. Some cars would just randomly stop or go really slow and didn’t have a racing line. Now, they are really getting after it. The technology is developing so fast.

Im not saying you are trying to replace human drivers, but you are definetly teaching them to drive to hunt and kill us in the future.

IDK what kind of future autonomous vehicle software has, but it'd probably nice to have the tools to develop that software in the world's collective arsenal, so good on ya. Probably the only interesting competition IndyCar actually holds these days lol

We’re NOT trying to replace human racing drivers. These machines are precise, but nowhere near capable of handling the chaos of an Indy 500 with 33 drivers. This is about testing and pushing the limits of AI & safe autonomy - driven by exceptional researchers worldwide.

The Lemans would have to be lengthened to 72 hours to account for charging time. Next it will be driver-less race cars. The whole point of racing is the challenge of winning between humans. I think this technology will take many more years before it becomes normally accepted.

Took my first ride in a driverless cab last week. Had I known it would make a 9 minute drive into a 33 minute drive without using the freeway and for some reason driving through downtown Phoenix at 2:30 AM I would have made a different choice.

Lives at stake is what makes it so exciting to watch racing. About the only people I can see watching a race like this is people that are betting and for that reason alone.

Kind of cool, and I'll bet there's some serious technology involved, but it looks like it's going to need a raft of improvements before it's going to challenge a real race car driver. I'll bet I could lap Indy a lot faster in my Avalon Hybrid.
