Most figs (common) aren't self-fertile. Self fertile is when the same tree fertilizes itself. Instead, they're parthenocarpic meaning they don't need fertilization/pollination to produce fruit.

We don't generally deal in seeds, but we do currently offer a Wildflower Seed Mix and a Prairie Seed Mix. Our product pages list the flower in the mix which may give you a good starting place. naturehills.com/products/wildflower-seed-mix naturehills.com/products/prairie-seed-mix Happy planting - Whit

I am planning on planting several Serviceberry trees this next Spring. The plan is to plant them in an area of my property that has direct sun. However, there is an easement that the city I live in has for what I believe has electric wires of some sort. This is North Carolina, so warm weather, and here near the Atlantic Ocean, trenches for electrical or other things such as water lines, sewer lines, and gas lines are never at the 18" depth or more as in cooler climes. My question is - How shallow (or deep) and how spreading are the root systems of Serviceberry trees/shrubs? The answer to this question will impact just what side of my driveway I plant these. The answer to this question also will impact the American Hazelnut trees/shrubs I also plan to plant this coming Spring.

Hi there, serviceberries don't have overly aggressive root systems. They're mostly fine textured and usually stay in the top 18 inches of soil. They'll spread in all directions wherever they find food and water but aren't known for having troublesome surface roots. Happy planting! - Whit

@@Naturehills Thanks for the info. I think I have picked out where the Serviceberry and American Hazelnut trees need to be planted in order to help both the birds and beasts and myself as well.

I'm trying to find out if I can plant the Rose Mallow Dark Mystery in rhode island..do I need to over winter this beautiful plant inside or will it survive New England winters
@Naturehills
@Naturehills 23 күн бұрын
Hi there! Dark Mystery is hardy in zones 4-9 and will do well outside all year in the New England area. It will die back to the ground in the winter and send up new shoots in the spring. Happy planting! -Whit

Thank you very much for your reply. What is the optimal number of pollinators if we have 100 trees of the type A for example? is it 1 type B per 6 type A? or what? , what is the best distribution model for trees B and A in farm? what is the best space between them as trees and between trees rows? many thanks for you in advance.

When I moved into my home, 37 years ago, I had a huge Ragin’ Red in the back yard that towered over the top of my house. It took my breath away and the main reason I bought the house to begin with. My now ex-husband and our 3 kids took me out to lunch for Mother’s Day. When we got home, my ex stopped to check the mail but I asked him to stay there a little longer so I could soak up the splendor of this gorgeous tree in spring. I’ve only ever seen one other but it was in Macon, Georgia and I live up in the North Georgia town of Rome. The next day I went to the store. When I came home, I watched in horror as my tree fell sideways to the ground. I ran to the backyard to find my ex with a chainsaw. I screamed and cried for hours. He claims he cut it so he could get his truck back there easier. There was a pine he could have cut but chose to cut my heart out instead. This was the beginning of the end of my marriage as I knew no one could love me and do such a thing. After my divorce, my youngest daughter painted a picture of a Ragin’ Red and wrote the word, “Forward ,” on it. It has become a symbol we share and include in gifts to each other. I made it my mission to find another but none of the nurseries sell them. I learned they were very expensive so the more common ones sell easier. Finally last spring my frequent searches paid off. I am the proud owner of a beautiful Ragin’ Red. I followed all the instructions for planting and it has so far survived me. This time, I planted in the front yard where I can watch it thrive and protect it from predators like deer and ex-husbands.

Lovely to hear all those positive remarks because Ihave a Cox's Orange Pippin' in my backyard. My Granny Smith tree did not survive so my tree has never borne fruit. I have been weeding around it & I recently planted a Golden Delicious near it so I hope I will have fruit in the future. Thank you for your informative video.

I live in Louisiana and when my parents bought a house there were 2 pear trees in the back yard . They were about 5’6” tall with long bushy limbs growing out. One was a canning pear and the other was a eating pear. These pears were so large about the size of a large soft ball and we had to take 2 X 4 boards and cut a V notch in the end of them to prop up the limbs due to them being about to break . Those pears were so juicy and sweet in there own category. Was this just a fluke for these trees growing such large fruit year after year or is there a category of pears that grow this large?
