full video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJyQqIVqp6ybrsU 3D view: sketchfab.com/3d-models/crino... Sugarland, Texas Museum of Natural Science. Crinoids, Platycrinites Saffordi, Mississippian 358.9 million years ago Indiana, USA The Edwardsville Formation was named by Stockdale (1931, p. 220) for Edwardsville, Floyd County, Ind. The type section is along former Indiana Highway 62 a short distance northeast of the town near the center of the NE¼ sec. 1, T. 3 S., R. 5 E. Stockdale included strata between his Floyds Knob Formation below and his Harrodsburg Limestone above. The latter included the Ramp Creek as its basal member. The Floyds Knob was later designated as the basal member of the Edwardsville, and the Ramp Creek was given formational status (Nicoll and Rexroad, 1975, p. 3). The Edwardsville of present usage overlies the Spickert Knob Formation and underlies the Ramp Creek Formation. (See "Borden Group" for a discussion of obsolete terms that have been applied to this stratigraphic interval. 20160924 163808

How did they pin point this to be 358 . Nine million years but not 358 million years

Hi, thank you for asking a great question. The decimal point is an estimate of an average age. Average means, there are many readings that are then taken an average from, that is how you get a decimal. I do agree it is impossible to pin point exact age of rocks, but using data from various sources you can make an estimate. Also take a look at these geological ways of dating rocks, etc: Radiometric dating: This method involves measuring the decay of radioactive isotopes in minerals within or around the fossil. For example, the decay of the isotope Carbon-14 can be used to date fossils up to approximately 50,000 years old. For older fossils, other isotopes like Uranium-238 or Potassium-40 are used to date the rock layers in which the fossil is found. Biostratigraphy: This method involves comparing the fossil to others of known age from other locations. Certain species of organisms evolved and went extinct at specific times throughout Earth's history, and so the presence or absence of certain fossils can help determine the age of the rock layer in which they were found. Magnetostratigraphy: This method involves analyzing the magnetic properties of the rock layers in which the fossil is found. Earth's magnetic field reverses polarity at irregular intervals, and these changes are recorded in the rock layers. By analyzing the magnetic properties of the rock layers around the fossil, scientists can determine the age of the layer. Stratigraphic correlation: This method involves comparing the rock layers in which the fossil is found to rock layers in other locations with known ages. If the rock layers can be correlated, the age of the fossil can be determined based on the age of the correlated layer.

Looking at something that old and seeing what a complex organism that it is, one can’t still believe we are at the top of the food chain if something this complex existed millions of years ago

Yes very ancient. For example they are almost 500 million years older than the last dinosaur. They already been long dead and fossilized by the time T Rex was walking above them. That is a very long time.

Several factors. First, easiest and most accurate is depth. The closer to the surface rock, the younger it is. Second is the type of rock it’s found in. If it’s oceanic sandstone and we found it in a desert that hasn’t seen water in millions of years that gives more clues as to age. Then there is well documented study regarding the types of life found in different epochs. It’s not going to be accurate down to the year, but it can be dated to within an period of time.
