hahaha looked fun I was out in the 29er on Sunday with my brother as was to windy for me in the 600 and we manged to cap size it and when we were righting it a gust caught us and blew us back over straight into a keel boat who came slightly to close and we then spent what felt like hours but was rely just a few seconds as they dragged us along by the mast almost snapping it so lovely day for sailing glad to see you had fun.

I have been looking at 600s as a first single handed trapeze boat, good idea or bad idea?
@wrussell

I think it's a great boat to move into from something more typical like a Laser. I went from a Laser Radial into the 600 (you can see my earlier videos to see my journey). Took me some time to get use to trapezing but once it clicked, I've never looked back. Tons of enjoyment even in lighter breeze as the big fully battened main powers up quickly. I also love the simplicity of it too. Very little to maintain and cheap to run!

One thing I like about the 600 is its simplicity. There isn't much to maintain, the mainsail lasts for ages, and it's really quick to rig. A lot of adrenaline without much headache.

Hi will, a quick question on righting the 600 after a capsize. On my 700 i often hear the dagger board or the housing for it creaking concerningly loud once i'm on top of the dagger board. I presume this is because due to me being lighter than most meaning i have to stand further out on it, putting more stress on it when righting the boat. Any advice on this or is it a normal sound?
@wrussell
@wrussell 25 күн бұрын
I haven’t sailed a 700 so only compared to my experience in other dinghies, such as a 600. My concern has always been in the foil giving way, but I’ve fortunately never had that issue. I’d guess that if you have an older boat, it might be a bit softer and give more. Worth checking if it has any leaks around the centreboard case, as something might be giving more than it should.

Looks like a handful but great fun! As a 600 sailor a mainsheet cleat is handy to give you some slack to adjust the trapeze (although I know a cleated main in this is scary even for a few seconds!) and mainsheet to a block at the back on some light elastic (I did mine with another block at the front to get maximum length of elastic) take up you can avoid it wrapping round the corner, takes some tweaking but worth it when it’s set up right!

Feel your pain! Was at that event last year in Storm Erin on my Blaze’s Fire sail. Got knocked over even just sitting there with the sail flapping, almost ran out of energy that time too. Took me an hour just to get downwind back to the shore! Will share your video with my friend who’s thinking of getting a 600 - he might opt for a trimaran after that!

Hi will, very amature 49er sailor here, - with regards to your main sheet on the 9ers we have a peice of a elastic that takes the sheet forward so that it doesn't go floating of the back of the boat but we still have acsess to it. Just wondered if there was any way to do that on the 6, might be a bit of an easier way to keep it in the boat and remove the problem of it getting trapped around the edge of the rack. - Also loving the videos keep it up!!
@wrussell
@wrussell Ай бұрын
That’s what I’m thinking of trying. I have tried it before but think the elastic didn’t have enough stretch to it. Need something that doesn’t also fight me on those sketchy reaches!

A few thoughts from an old time 600 sailor.. - New style rig looks nice, but did they ditch the option for the small rig? Almost never used, but might have been the day :) - I used to stay a bit higher on the trapeze on wild days and concentrate on having the boat heeled to windward.. let the hits drive you level, and never dragging the rack. Tacking in particular it's critical that the leeward back corner is 'up' when you turn so that a) the rudder 'lifts' the back and doesn't dig in, and b) the drag of the sail is inside the turn, helping you turn, not outside fighting.. - righting lines! a bungee tidied line under the rack. Didn't use them often, but in these conditions, lets you have the board up - feet against the hull, upper body out. Life saver especially with the wide rack. Nice to see the class still going!

Just in case anyone's thinking the boat in front must have been rubbish I'd like to point out that the helm is/was about 40yrs older than Will and could see daylight through parts of his sail. Also think hull might be 20 years older than Will's.

@wrussell
@wrussell 2 ай бұрын
It’s hard to gauge from this view, but I got hit by a big gust towards the end of the video, and the leeward rack started to hit the water and cause the boat to react weirdly. Decided it would be better to unhook, and fall out than swing round the front as I could smell a sudden stop with the rack acting as a break. This isn’t my first time bailing out like this but I did still bruise my leg on the edge of the daggerboard 🤣
