I've been worn down.... I just sent my Aid de camp to go off into snowy Canadian winter, to secure a copy of this work of Art. I'm well into a Wellington's victory game, and the rules are firming up nicely through repetition.

I'm currently well along an online Game of Wellington's Victory, and it's really not that bad to learn as you go.... I'd say, don't worry about perfection here, just give the game a good run and to get the feel of this amazing rules set. I love this scale. I'll be getting this game, but am open too playing online with Vassal if anyone is interested... I'm looking to play Wellington's Victory as the French. I'd be open to Ney vs Wellington as well as Winter's victory. Thanks

Seems a bit odd that this scenario excludes the action in New Guinea, since that was a major issue for the Japanese in Rabaul and Allies in Port Moresby

22:43 The mode card's movement rate of 5/7 is affected by the weather. So when you had some question at 10:55 about what -1 meant for MP costs, this is what the -1 is applied to. The movement rate on the mode card. Yes?

Hi - thanks for the great review. The box indicates solitaire suitability as low but you indicated that you played solitaire. Do I miss out on material content if I play solitaire and is it viable?
@thegeneralsretreat16455 ай бұрын
IMO it's definitely doable. There's always something lost in operational naval games when you know more than you should, but Mark offers some Solo methods for playing in 35.0 of the rule set. (And it's easy for me to "forget" the other side's intentions when I switch sides.) Once you get to Strategic scenario level, the question is not so much knowing what the other side is doing, but simply managing all the stuff you have to do on each side.

FYI - I think your setup is not quite correct. Around hex 2417, two of the cities start as under Macedonian City Control since the city name also has '(Hellas)' with it and setup states Hellas area is Macedonian control. So the Macedonian have a few toeholds along that coastline and already hold a few of the VP hexes at start. (I ask on BGG as well and seems to be confirmed)

That was a real thorn in in the side for the Macedonian player.

The last combat you solved, you looked on the Cavalry combat table, but both units were infantry. Apart from that, the Allied unit, in case of retreat will not be able to retreat, as the other stacked unit is behind them (not covering flank) as both flanks are covered by Allied units so you have to roll on the Unable to Retreat Table

@thegeneralsretreat16458 ай бұрын
Yeah, that was a biggie for me--my mind was thinking that you just have to worry about getting that road movement (1/2 MP) rate and wasn't thinking about trestles. So even if you have to keep your distance between Road March units, it's much quicker to go into RM even in trails when there are a lot of streams.
@michaeldemeirleir8 ай бұрын
FYI: You only subtract VP’s for the cards you played, IF the card’s instruction was actually used (26.16). You don’t have to subtract them if used for the movement points only.
@thegeneralsretreat16458 ай бұрын
Yes, I understand that, but if you play a card (not tactics card) during card phase, do you HAVE to use the event if possible? And if that’s so, then you will often gain negative VPs. I often find myself playing the least costly one-because there aren’t any desirable choices.
@thegeneralsretreat16458 ай бұрын
Because in 24.35 it says "when you play a card, you (or your opponent) have to execute the text instruction at the appropriate phase during the current or next player turn." So sometimes your stuck with playing something that could be appropriate but not necessarily useful.
@michaeldemeirleir8 ай бұрын
@@thegeneralsretreat1645Yes.. I’m certainly no expert at playing with the cards, so I had to look up the rules (24.0)… 24.6 says that for Game Cards and Status Cards “if the action prescribed can be performed, then it must be performed during the appropriate Phase, on the turn the card is played”. Tactic cards - as you said earlier - may be played for the MP’s only (24.81). There seem to be no specifications for Arrival Cards, or for March cards, though…

@@michaeldemeirleir so it appears that you could play a card and then if the activity on a card isn't used, per se, it doesn't count for VPs.

True-it was a little disconcerting that the main Coalition force had to basically start from scratch but as you’ll see later, the French got a little bit too bold and got their nose bloodied when that force showed up!
@JUKspn8 ай бұрын
The scale of the units does not shine in these small scenarios, battalions and batteries would have been better... Maybe I have missed some moments of the video or the specific instructions of the game. There is no initiative roll option for the French units in the south of the map who are bored the whole game?
@thegeneralsretreat16458 ай бұрын
The units out of range of commanders have to roll for initiative. So it’s hit or miss that they will move each turn until they get closer.

rewatching again - sub attacks are not the same for both sides. Japan sub attacks are 2less, but Allies are 1less since they have bad torpedoes until Feb1943 (+1 drm before 43).

Also, Japan did Strategic Transport of a LRA to Guadalcanal, that is not possible for two reasons. 1) Guadalcanal is not a port and a seabase afaik does not count as a port 2) Guadalcanal is in range of a sub patrol which blocks Strat Transport.
@genchaos33858 ай бұрын
After watching this again, why do the Allies have 3 sub patrols? Reviewing the forces (setup & reinforcements), allies only get 6 sub points. So only ONE sub patrol can placed (min of 6sub pts), not 3 like in your video(which is 18 sub points and not given in scenario). At least thats how I understand it.

I saw 2 important mistakes. 1) When going thru the phases Weather thru Sub Patrol, theses phases are ONLY done ONCE a Month(at month start only). So halfway thru video when you end the first operation midway thru July, you wrongly go thru Weather thru Sub Patrol phases. Instead, you should go DIRECTLY to Bidding for New OP. 2) Units can ONLY be Activated ONCE a Month and takes a new month for units to be refreshed/reset. So (example) you wrongly activate the big US division on New Georgia a second time in the month of July and use it as the lead unit as well. Best to assume the allies winning New Georgia actually happens a few weeks later in August.
@thegeneralsretreat16458 ай бұрын
Correct on both counts!
@JUKspn8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video In my case in the end I have made a mix of rules. I like and have much more fun with Stumptner's combat system, the issue of force points, ZOCs, bombings... but I don't like his order system and it is too complicated to use while playing alone. I have tried some other set of rules because it is worth developing for a system with so many modules (I have 8-9). I don't like its small scenarios and I have played them very little or not at all, it tries to give a tactical aspect to the game that it does not have due to the scale of the units, although it does have the scale of the map, very nice, really.
@thegeneralsretreat16458 ай бұрын
I agree, the order system in Stumptner is a pretty big layer to add. I did like the chit pull idea with a chance to have two combined corps get a chance to go together, but there are only a couple of games where you can get the chits for--otherwise you have to make your own. (Or possibly use the casualty force markers) I'm actually having fun with the small 1st battle of Montenotte in the Piedmont volume. Lots of back and forth and maneuvering.
@JUKspn8 ай бұрын
@@thegeneralsretreat1645 Yes, I also used the OSG morale markers (more than duplicated with both games) as game sequence chits. But it doesn't convince me much. There are very small units, especially British-Dutch, Spanish... which are basically divisions. There is very little capacity if you want to do something together with several divisions and in the end there are more activations but less powerful. I no longer used chit activation. I started to think about mixed activations, units at a certain distance from an active formation can activate and act together with the formation that has been activated... but it is complicated to then put markers of activated units when their own formation activation chit comes out . In the end, I use OSG activations. In general I don't like the issue of orders in these Napoleonic games. In the "Wise Bayonets" and "Moravian Sun" series (I don't have the third one (by Acies Edizioni)) they also have an elegant system of orders and markers, less restrictive. But they seem unplayable to me in solo and a little unrealistic too. By the way. I made my own strength markers for the Stumptner system... but the BCS (MMP) ones work very well :)
