ZIGBEE + USB are not happy together when aligned. Home Assistant suggests to use a small extension cord to misalign them even with their proprietary adapter.

Well first of all the decision to change was not because it was free, I'd already been looking at the SMLIGHT coordinators as an option prior to them contacting me. That aside though, the change is all part of future plans I have with my network and host that I'd rather have in place now than when I've expanded things.

@@Byteofgeek ok, but that’s not an answer :) Why you are changing, that’s the question. It’s not irrelevant as I am having old coordinator myself, conbee II, which is still good, so not sure what to do :) I am considering skyconnect but I read it’s not that stable when doing both matter and zigbee, so now I’m thinking use skyconnect for matter and leave conbee II for zigbee… still thinking, that’s why I’m interested in your reasoning. Changing something to something else just because it’s newer has very little sense to me..

Good Video. I have one called GoControl made by Nortek. It's both a zigbee and zwave dongle. Have had it for several years and has given me only one problem. I found out it wasn't just this dongol or just me, that people did have problems with dongol's in general if they plugged them in directly into their computers / PI's. After some checking found the radio near the USB port on the computer causes interference problems sometimes. After getting a USB extension cable that fixed a zigbee drop out problem i was having.

The thing about these types of devices is that there is something for everyone's budget and obviously what you get in terms of sensor quality and number of sensors is reflected in that price.
@krakakapaul

@@Byteofgeek yes but this is a custom board. With 60$ of off the shelf cheap sensors. These aren’t even the most accurate sensors on the market. But What is the point measuring airquality when a hepa air cleaner with the same sensors on board are cheaper and measure and solve the airquality issue instead of just notifying you.
@Byteofgeek
@Byteofgeek 6 күн бұрын
@krakakapaul ok, First point. I've priced up the sensors, EXACTLY as AirGradient have listed them on their website, from AliExpress and excluding tax and shipping it's approximately £60. Add the tax, shipping, custom board and injection moulded case and you'd struggle to do this for the price the kit is being sold for. Second point, yes it doesn't filter air, that's not its job. Consumer grade HEPA filters are basically a rip off. They only really deal with PM2.5 and have the smallest amount of carbon in them that lets them get away with stating that they have it. If you want anything even half decent then they're in the hundreds of pounds and if you want anything that actually works then you'll need commercial grade, and they aren't cheap! Just because something isn't for you doesn't mean it's a bad product, a rip off, cheap and nasty or anything else. It's just not for you, nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything and everyone is free to do their own thing. 👍

I don’t think you see my point. Lets imagine we do a test and have 2 equal rooms. in one room we place this sensor and in the other we place an equal expensive hepa14 air purifier. Which of the 2 rooms will have a better airquality at the end of the day?

Air quality must be flavour of the month. I've just watched Reed from Smart Home Solver review a few air quality sensors. It's not something we've been too fussed about as we live in the Scottish countryside and tend to leave our windows open most of the year, especially at night, even in winter. The safety side is covered by CO alarms, but I must admit to be curious about the quality of indoor and outdoor air where we are. Am I nearly $400 curious though? I'm not sure. Good review though. Thanks.

I think it's one of those things that will vary according to where you are in the world. If you leave your windows open during the day to deal with hot weather and you happen to live next to a busy road then how much of that is just getting pumped straight into your house, we just don't know but something like this at least gives us an idea and enables us to deal with it As for the cost, I think everyone will have an opinion on this, I also think the majority will say it's too expensive. It depends on how interested you are in wanting to know or caring about, this level of information. It's along the same lines as buying a smart weather station when you can just look out the door or look it up on a website.

A shame Synology is still not including the 802.3bz (N-baseT, autonegotiated 1Gb → 5Gb) ethernet, in a lame attempt to sell a few 802.3an (10Gb only) expansion cards. Which are totally inapropriate for a SOHO environment where most nodes are consumer appliances with 1Gb or 2.5 ports, with maybe a few 100Mb hold outs, all incompatible with an 802.3an switch.[a few high end switches can combine BZ and AN... for a price]

I made the same 4 out of 5 mistakes you did. Started with Amazon Echos and the standard Sky Q hub for wifi. I built the zigbee network backwards by starting with a SONOFF ZBDongle-P and lots of end devices. Then added routers to bolster the mesh when devices became non-reponsive. I'll be rebuilding the entire zigbee network tomorrow with the SMLight SLZB-06 PoE coordinator. The fact that saying that just trips off the tongue shows how much I've come on in 2 years of running Home Assistant. The wifi network has now been bolstered with a couple of Netgear APs to improve coverage, I also now run an ethernet cable to any network device that is not mobile. I moved to presence based automations very quickly and our whole house operates based on room presence using ESPresence devices. I think my next move will be to ditch the Sky hub router as it drops out randomly. I also quite fancy going down the VPN route for all smart devices to keep them away from the internet. Any recommendations?😊

My own experience when it comes to router and smart devices/home, I started with couple of DIY devices, everything was fine on a basic Tp-link Archer C-20 but as number of Devices grew, started getting Outages until I rebooted it. Then I took an decade old router from my closet, it's a Tp-link MR3420 running DD-WRT firmware, I reflashed it to best available firmware and set it up wired to Main router on bridge mode, moved all low powered/DIY switches & my sonoff switches and Voila my outages vanished. Currently running around 45+ devices without any issue, I do get 10/11 mbps on NAS file transfers. Lastly, when choosing the right router you need to be little skeptical about available RAM also, a 8MB ram based router no matter how powerful it's cpu it has will restrict you with number of Devices it would serve. Go with routers which have more than 16 MB Ram and make sure it can run open-wrt or dd-wrt firmware, You would end up getting a more stable and capable router on same hardware which has frustrated you with it's stock firmware. There are very few routers, open-wrt flash-able available here in India so I am delaying my network upgrade to a gigabit network as of now.

Can absolutely relate to a lot of your experiences. To start using HA is a frustrating journey. The comment "well it builds itself" is kind of true but in real life it will be a mess that you have to correct and after that you are totally on your own, adding further devices. You have to put yourself in the shoes of a beginner. First thing you get asked is what to include and not. As a beginner you haven't got a clue about what's what in that list, so for safety you select all and end up with a mess of things that you don't need on the dash. Well, then you try to delete some of them and then you are on your own trying to sort things. Frustrating how things are moving around and after days of tying to force thing to appear in the right place and you try it out from your tablet and what looks good on you computer will be a mess on the tablet. This is just dash problems but your Zigbee experiences I totally lived through. 😂

I know they are working towards something like Dwain's dash and when that becomes standard it can open up HA to a wider audience. What ha need is something default that is inflexible as Google home, that does the job with zero thrills. We would absolutely replace that with something else but for a beginner it would be invaluable.

I have accepted that wireless smart home is just a shit show and will never be the option I am looking for (a smart home that just works and gets out of the way by automating everything I would want to do). Between proprietary WiFi solutions that have a tendency to phone home a lot and ZigBee devices that don’t exactly behave like ZigBee devices should (looking at you Aqara), connectivity issues with the ZigBee network in my apartment complex and stupid workarounds for other issues. Then there are constant software updates to the mess that is my home assistant setup that I also have to keep track off. I really appreciate the home assistant project as they are doing their best to make the best out of a shitty overall situation. A brilliant and informative video, mate! A couple of thoughts here: In terms of the various devices you've got - if they're Tuya based, Localtuya from HACS is one way to simplify it, but if you're feeling adventurous - Libretiny and such to take control. WiFi - an openwrt compatible router/access point is a must. I highly recommend the routers from GL.iNet. I added a tiny one of them onto my network as a bridge/repeater, that handles all my iot devices. I've made all of those mistakes myself as well, but I guess it's thanks to them that why my current setup is pretty damn solid.

@@Byteofgeek regarding Localtuya - make sure to use the xZetsubou fork - way more regularly(-ish) updated. The libretiny thingy let me take control of a handful of previously shelved devices, especially Beken chip based ones. What's grand about that project, is that it's now an official module in esphome, so after you've done the whole flashing bit, integrating the devices back into your environment should be a breeze! Saying that, there are a couple of bulbs I've had some weirds quirks with (low light colours sometimes staying on despite turning off bulb etc.), but I'm sure they're either user errors, or there is probably a solution for it out there somewhere. The GL.inet routers were a complete revelation to me, as I had never heard of it before. My iot router now is one of those shadow travel routers, and and for good measure I threw in a usb drive for it to have ample storage (for a full blown openwrt setup, rather than their own flavour of it).

Installing Control4 (a locked in "proprietary" ecosystem) was my main mistake. I was completely dependant and beholden to their dealer only model and unable to update either software, hardware or automations myself. Then they would end of life product forcing me to pay for upgrades. I was totally nickel and dimed. Then I think they went bust. And were taken over by someone else who didn't really care. I ended up pulling it all out. It cost me a fortune. But what I learned from that mistake with watching the dealer build it, networks, wifi, zigbee, automating - what to ethernet hardwire vs what to wifi, what to try automate and what to leave alone etc- allowed me to instal Home Assistant with confidence myself. So don't be too disappointed if you screw decisions up. Learn from the mistakes. I am so much happier with the DIY model of home assistant. Great video by the way. Very valid comments. Install HA on a decent server from day one. Don't piss fart around with a RasPi. Build your zigbee network slowly with mains powered zigbee devices. And have a roubust backup plan very early on.. Another mistake is to always "be the first" to do everything. Don't be too much of a Geek! Sit back and wait a few weeks on firmware upgrades (for device interaction breakages to be sorted out by the github community)- even wait months on some of the new tech. I still don't have Matter. Or ESPHome. Or use bluetooth within HA. I've waited over 6 months to try the new local HA voice. Let some other boffin be the test dummie. Oh and feed your pet the old fashioned way.. it's way more personable and interactive! A big mistake with home automation, is to try tackle everything. Some things are better left unautomated. Particularly the wife. (And definitely the girlfriend!) Hence the term "wife factor". Paul Hibbert is the expert on that! 😀

Thanks, got an nvram error on my HomeAssistant ZHA integration and the manual bootloader method did not work. With your description I was able to reflash the Sonoff stick and my ZHA Integration ist ready to work directly again!

Good content. Yes Home Assistant is a world of confusion. I find the documentation lacking. It's very vague. So, I appreciate any and everyone trying to explain through examples to demystify it. Please continue to create video's about these more advanced topics. And, a little feed back on the production that might increase your "likes". Maybe create a stronger outline and or scripts of what your going to present. The number of pauses, "ah", in your conversation can be distracting. Wax on, Wax off, practice, practice, practice. Cheers.

It's certainly an uphill challenge but the rewards are great when you get there. Thanks for watching and the feedback 👍

After spending almost $1,500 on Eufy Security, we would not recommend Eufy for security needs. Too many unresolved issues, lack of personal security, tech savy hacksters spying on you, without consent, slow to respond for motion & doorbell alerts, many have left the area, before notification comes through, which makes for history, but inefficient for actual usage. With unsatisfactory usage, for money spent, we don't feel the need to upgrade! Unhappy users, thst bought into a system that didn't live up to the hype that was portrayed in the marketing information.

On my Arlo Essential, I can not get the number off my feeds. I have no feeds and there is a number 36 that I can not get off. Should not be any feeds. Can you help??

The main issue with Eufy - and the reason I returned the entire system - is that only the bottom half of the frame in view is monitored for motion detection. They told me this themselves. For me this meant I would never be notified when someone was walking my path to the front door and I would only be notified when someone was at the back of my car, not when they were walking to it via the drive or at the front of it. My car was parked FACING the road! To combat this they suggested I lower the camera and raise the angle of it. This would have meant the majority of the frame would have been the houses opposite. But worse still it would have meant the camera would have been within arms length of someone standing beneath it! Also their customer support was God awful.

Thanks for the tips. I added swipe and the battery notes straight away. I was going to manually add the battery types to my low battery messaging automation. Adding notes has certainly simplified it. Great work and thanks again, also thanks to the creators.

Why not use low battery level detection automation blueprint? It covers all batteries automatically including notifications about low state of a battery…

It does but always good to have alternative approaches according to your needs 👍
