Sorry, unfortunately the Nostalgia Air schematic for this Firestone radio model S-7398-5 doesn’t give me much on resistance values especially for any coils. All I have for the oscillator coil is the Firestone diagram #57, part number 500248, which is useless to us. Perhaps you can hopefully find something on a forum.

That radio 📻 was promotion 👌 from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, sometime back in the 1940's. You've got the table model, but these radios 📻 also came in a floor model, too. Both were vacuum tube type models, but there were many styles of these radios to choose from.😂. Shango066 had done a video 📹 on a Firestone Airchief radio from 1947. It was a floor model. A few new capacitors should get ya going on this. Ya should also check the dial light and dial cord. In other words, it's best 👌 to do a tune up on this radio before it's put back together. I think the floor model Firestone Airchief had a dial cord restringing diagram inside the back of it. The same should go for the tabletop model, if I'm not mistaken. Your friend, Jeff.

I agree Jeffrey; it’s a shame and very disappointing that the picture tube heater was open on this nice looking 1981 TV. Very rare for this year set, I’ve seen this on one other TV but it was much older. The heater usually goes through a separate primary winding of the flyback transformer which I’m thinking since I didn’t have any HV the flyback took out the heater as well. Thank for your comment.

Hello Ken, nice video. I recently asked you about your AM transmitter and have purchased the Hurricane with the bluetooth option. It's nice and actually transmits through the house and even out in the yard. It has some hum and buzz; just a little. Yours sounds loud and clear on your video. Does yours have any buzz or hum and if not, how is yours installed?
@kenslab1973Ай бұрын
My transmitter is very close on the top shelf of my work bench, that being said I still can get some hum, but I have a Ground Loop Isolator, also known as Noise Filter or an “in line 3mm audio filter” which I plug directly in the back of the Hurricane. Amazon has theses. My radios are mostly powered through my isolated transformer which eliminates the earth ground. It might help to add these ground loop isolators to the receiving radios also. Big LED lights and definitely CFL/Halogen bulbs will cause interference. Radio reception is better than others on various radios. I’m using this Hurricane for restored radios and when I transmit to other rooms, I use my FM transmitter for that. Just experiment with several things to get the best reception. Perhaps if your radios have the 3 prong grounded plugs, you could try using an adapter eliminating the earth ground and or install ferrite coils, also known as a ferrite bead, a ferrite choke, or an RFI choke wrapped around the power cord. You can find these installed on things like AC adapters like laptops etc. If you’re using Bluetooth I can’t help you there since I don’t have that option, but I would try all the suggestion above. Good Luck!

Does that radio use a household light bulb 💡 behind the radio dial? If so, it looks like 👍 you're in luck with that one. Just don't use too high of wattage of bulb. Also DO NOT use a halogen light bulb. Even at the correct wattage, they get considerably hotter, and could possibly catch the radio 📻 on fire 🔥. Your friend, Jeff.
@kenslab1973Ай бұрын
It requires a 25 or lower-watt incandescent light bulb only.

Hi Ken can you please tell me what diode is d314 and d318 zener... If possible can you suggest what substitutes can I use
@kenslab1973Ай бұрын
The Service Manual shows the D314 as part number US1035. Use number 1035 and it’s a schottky 10A, 35V diode, package 220. The D318 diode is showing a part number as MZ-043, use MZ043. Not much data on this one other than the MZ043 diode appears to be a Zener diode from the MIC Group Rectifiers series. Zener diodes are often used for voltage regulation, providing a stable reference voltage. You can Google cross references for these diodes but the MZ043 zener you might have a hard time locating this diode. Sorry, that’s all I can do at my end. Good luck with your repair.

Radiotvphononut was resurrecting a newer version of this around 2017 or so. This looks more worthwhile, being a tube type radio 📻. From when ya take the back off, reveals a beautiful chassis. Just be careful, in case this happens to be a series-string (hot chassis) set. Having one knob off while the radio is on, can result in a very nasty shock, if ya touch the metal shaft. Also, be mindful of the chassis, as the above implies, especially if ya must work on the radio with it plugged 🔌 in, and on. Your friend, Jeff.

When I was a kid in the 5th grade in grade school we moved off the farm so my sister could go to High School. We first moved into a rooming house, mom, dad and my 2 sisters stayed in the small 2 room apartment a kitchenette and living room and bedroom, I shared another room in the house with a young bum who was washing dishes at the local cafe where mom took a job cooking. My room mate had a radio just like that, it was our entertainment, this was back in 1961 so the radio still had some good radio shows on the air in the evenings. When my room mate got drunk one night and slashed his wrists he got run out of town via a court judgement after they hauled him to the hospital to sew him up then jail because it was illegal back then to try and off yourself. Sadly when he caught the train out of town, the little radio went with him, I would have liked to have kept it. It was a few months before my Uncle came home from the Army and gave me a little pocket transistor so I had a radio to listen to in my lonely room, I had it to my self after the bum hit the road.

What a cute radio and sounds ok to me. The wiring of the vol pot is weird. I guess engineers love to dazzle us with their brilliance lol
@kenslab19732 ай бұрын
Yeah Frank, that volume pot wiring is confusing as hell. If the output is the wiper (which usually is) but the wiper is going to chassis which is also the B-side. We know that the B- has to complete several circuits but why isn’t one of the end nodes going to ground instead. It’s even weird that the volume pot is wired in the RF circuit instead of being wire closer to the output circuit. I got the schematic from Nostalgia Air and was hoping a knowledgeable viewer could clear up this mystery.

Good job showing off that Magnavox. Solid State and a modern assembly. In 1965 some companies were still selling tube sets and hybrids. A side note, The FCC had just ended AM/FM simulcasting. New programming brought listeners to the FM Band. AFC compensated for drift in the values of the electronic components. The need was eliminated later on by frequency synthesizer circuits.
@kenslab19733 ай бұрын
Even a lot of vintage solid-state radios also had the switch settings for either FM or FM AFC. Yes, in modern radios; especially those using digital signal processing (DSP), the need for AFC is often eliminated because the DSP can handle signal strength variations more effectively, I think perhaps the AGC was even eliminated. I think were on the same page here. Thanks for watching and the comment.

@michaelkiley11923 ай бұрын
It seems like the radio is drawing very excessive current if the B+ voltage is dropping and the rectifier is getting hot. Also, if the sound is clear at first and becomes garbled after the radio has been on for a while, most likely, the audio output tube has grid emission, and the grid voltage drifts positive as the tube warms more. Try a new tube. Also, check the grid resistor for proper value and the coupling capacitor from the plate of the first audio tube for leakage. This is a common problem with paper capacitors.
@kenslab19733 ай бұрын
Thanks, Michael, for your informative comment, always great to get them from my viewers. I replaced all film capacitors and resistors that were out of tolerance, shown in this part 1 video. The selenium rectifier being old had very high resistance and was causing the 45% drop in the B+ voltage. Were on the same page here and by replacing the 19V8 first audio tube, that corrected the distorted sound issue after the radio got to operating temperatures. So, the plate from the first audio tube was causing the voltage variation to the control grid of the output tube. Can’t depend on tube testers at times where they respond differently under a real load. All the best.
@michaelkiley11923 ай бұрын
@@kenslab1973 Selenium rectifiers do degrade with age, and they should be replaced with silicon types. You may need to add 47 to 100 ohms in series with the silicon diode to match the normal series resistance of the selenium rectifier and keep the B+ voltage from getting too high. Use a flameproof or fusible resistor, because if the silicon diode, or anything else in the circuit, shorts, this resistor will be the fuse to protect from further damage or even fire. The first audio tube itself will not cause the output tube to draw too much current; how much current this tube draws is determined by the voltage on its control grid relative to its cathode. With most radio output tubes (such as 35B5, 35C5, 50B5, 50C5, 35L6GT, 50L6GT), the cathode bias resistor is usually 150 ohms and drops about 7.5 volts, making that cathode 7.5 V positive relative to 0V circuit common. The control grid is biased at 0 volts by a large value grid resistor, usually 470K ohms, also connected to 0v common. If the output tube grid is more than one half volt positive, the coupling capacitor from the plate of the first audio tube is leaky, the grid resistor is open or very high in value, or, especially if the current climbs and the sound degrades with time after the radio has been on for a while, the grid of the output tube is contaminated with some of the cathode emissive coating material and is trying to become like the cathode. As this happens, the output tube plate may start to glow red. Obviously, the tube is bad and must be immediately replaced.

One of the few mistakes not caught by Philco and republished in Rider's. Look at the two E cap connections on the parts location diagram for under the chassis called Figure 5. It is where C28A and C28B have nothing connected to them! C28B should have a connection to pin 6 of the 35C5 and a wire from C28A should go to ground. The wiring diagram itself is correct. Just like to vet information thrown at restorers just to see if we can realize that people made mistakes, even back then. Can't recall how many times I found diode symbols in reverse in circuit diagrams by Howard Sams over the years.
@kenslab19734 ай бұрын
Thanks Steve, I did use the Rider’s schematic and all E-Caps connections were spot on as you mentioned. The green negative wire was wired to all E-Caps internally when I re-stuffed it. I agree about the mistakes made on circuit diagrams, I have found mistakes on Rider’s and even the actual PhotoFact’s over the years to include alignment instruction. It’s always nice to get heads up on possible issues. God only knows how many mistakes I made myself.
