my radios are not older than the 70s- so I just use a little FM transmitter with a BT interface (ment for cars) that works pretty well and the quality is comparable to a real radio station with a strong signal. Would that be possible with AM?- or is the AM audio quality noticeably worse? (there are no AM Stations in my country any more and I can't remember how the quality was..)

Happy holidays sir ! Another magnificent job you did here 🏆. I'm glad you covered this topic since I've yet to perform a Bluetooth mod. But, enough people are inquiring about it now til I've accepted that day is coming for me. This video will serve as a useful guide when I finally delve into this. Having the function changeover switch tuner controlled is inspired. Hoping it'll be possible for me to arrange that or similar on the "lucky" radio I first tackle in this. I was also interested in your finding the cause of the excessive hum/buzz from this set. It seems Stromberg Carlson chassis are of a finicky nature due to their comparatively high gain audio designs, radio and otherwise. I once recapped one of their record players, a HiFi mono model PF-530 (Sams set 423 folder 21). Upon completion, it hummed excessively, the sound had an annoying "echo" quality, and blue glow was present in the 6V6 outputs. None of these conditions previously existed. The service was brought on by a too hot operating multicell filter capacitor. It was time for full service. After hours of struggling, I ended up relocating the cathode bypass capacitor BACK to being a section of the new twistlock pwr filter I had installed complete with observance of the original lead dress which I'd removed in favor an axial bypass close mounted and grounded right at the output tube sockets. Problem solved. It's the only time I've had that issue with a record player. Normally there's either no discernable difference or improvement moving the bypass closer to the outputs. One time, it apparently caused harm and it was a Stromberg. I think the problem was the removal of the original wire but either way everything returned to normal once I adhered to the original design. It's one of the absolute best sounding recordplayers I've ever heard to this day 🏆. It's one of a few in the mid 50s that were originally equipped with a .7 mil diamond stylus for LP ! Stromberg Carlson ahead of their time again.

I would point out that the reason for the 10 kilocycle (kHz) notch filter was to eliminate the 10 kHz beat note from adjacent frequency radio stations. I have a Truetone 724, a poor cousin of the 727, waiting on restoration. This video will be a help.

Cool project! Just a thought: A single screw mount at one end of the mechanical switch can be problematic. Over time, it could rotate out of reach and become non-operational. Instead, a non-contact optical switch would be a better long term solution.

Dear mr. Carlson, greetings from Amsterdam. I wonder how the stereo-to-mono conversion actually works, since, through the two capacitors, the output impedances of the left and right channels of the bluetooth board are actually put in parallel - and I guess the input impedance of the volume pot is relatively high compared to these output impedances. Summing will occur, but also quite a bit of (frequency dependant) attenuation, especially since you use two capacitors to create the sum-signal. Just being curious, wishing you all the best, and thanking you for your nice channel. From Amsterdam, NL, Peter.

Very cool! I got totally that you wanted to make the modifications as minimal as possible for a potential removal... but, I would have added one relay to your magic little circuit and a couple of LEDs to switch from the original back lit to a blue one during Bluetooth operation. But again, sure cool idea!

No practical reason IMO. Obviously there are much better sounding stereo systems for listening to music - bluetooth or otherwise. This project was likely motivated by two things: 1) because it was there and he can, and 2) content creation...it is afterall, youtube...where views translate to revenue.

Now that is genius engineering at installing a blue tooth audio input to a 1930's technology electronics so you can play back music from your smartphone. Question how would you install a direct raw audio input into this old radio? See some of us still use component CD, tape and Phono players and it would be nice to play those through the radio's audio.
@MrCarlsonsLab
@MrCarlsonsLab 15 сағат бұрын
Thats a whole lot easier, where the Bluetooth board feeds audio into the switch board PCB, the audio from a CD player (or similar) would be fed to that point, instead of the Bluetooth.

@@physicsguybrian if its wrapped in aluminum wouldn't gauss' law apply. like he literally said he used coax cable to reduce the buzz. Same principle, physicsguybrainless
@MrCarlsonsLab
@MrCarlsonsLab 15 сағат бұрын
If the foil was grounded, yes it would act like the coax shield and reduce buzz, as the hum is "capacitively" coupling to the transformer leads. If it was inductively coupling, the shield wouldn't be so effective.
