You've made a good job of attempting to return this computer to (closer to) its original state. However, this is something of an issue I have with the retro community: the puritanism of returning to original. This computer was modified intentionally. Better would have been to tidy it up and make it work as -was. The DIN plug tethered to the board was connected to rails in the computer so deriving the voltages it must supply should be straightforward. The "big arsed" capacitors were included because voltage rail droop is a real issue with these early PCBs due to long and narrow supply rails. When chips try to drive increased loads (external peripherals), the supply droops, so increased capacitance reduces that. But the increased caps mean greater inrush current which would burn out the original supply regulators, hence changing to an external supply. The mods you found on this computer were installed deliberatiely, and I think it's a shame you have pulled them all out without trying to understand them.

Yeah I get that. TBH I understand it a lot more now than what I did. I didn't like the way it was done 👍 and I personally want it to be spec back to spectrum as this is a machine I Weill keep for myself. I also have an acorns Archie from the same pickup with a pic power supply hanging out of this will be removed as well lol. But I appreciate your thinking 🤔 and thanks for the comment and feedback

@@Retro4u It's not exactly madness - it's a mod that fixes one of the Spectrum's shortcomings (unstable voltage regulation, 2 additional voltages needed for the lower RAM bank). If you want to see madness - I have a Issue3 board with an internal AY-soundchip + S-Video + 256k*1 RAMs (as 16k) to eliminate the need for +12/-5V power rails, a TC2048 with internal AY (switchable adressing) + RGB-out and an Interface1 case completely gutted which houses a AY+Joystick+RS232-interface. I've seen worse tho, since I'm mostly into unlicensed east block clones.

But... WHY!? It was a magnificent example of history, with a classic 2-voltage modification. You ended with a non-working machine and an 8-pack of destroyed RAM chips since it was impossible for them to survive 12V. You could have just measured pinout of that plug. And you destroyed it all 😭😥😔

It looks like he has replaced the regulator and charge pump circuit with an external PSU, hence the large caps, it would also have needed smaller ceramics in parallel for higher frequency noise. Might have been easier to identify all the power rails and test the speccy first before proceeding. The other adjustable devices and trimming caps, normally around a few hundred pico farads. There is also a broken track, I think, at 5:01 under the right most dram chip.

As somebody that switched from software emulation to a DE10 Nano based MiSTer setup many years ago, I can help explain why it feels better. ..... Muscle memory. Playing 8bit cores, I didn't really notice much difference, because the emulators (mame in particular) can do the hardware timings to near perfection, however by the 16 bit era, a dropped frame here, a bit of input lag there and suddenly it all feels slightly wrong. Because the MiSTer is essentially doing hardware-in-hardware simulation, most cores can get a level of accuracy that simply isn't possible in software emulation. In software it can *look* fine, but that jump you could always make, suddenly feels a lot harder. The clincher for me was the PSX emulation (arguably one of the least accurate cores), I've tried various Tekken releases on various software emulators and I suddenly sucked. I remembered all the moves, but struggled to execute them as perfectly. However on the MiSTer, I was suddenly my old self. the muscle memory took over on a way that simply didn't work under software emulation. If you're striving for even closer accuracy, invest in some SNAC adapters to use OG controllers (SNAC uses a USB port, but sends the OG signals, without the overhead of USB) and a CRT.
@Retro4u

What a great bit of information thankyou so much. I thought there was a difference after all I did try the pi but didn't get on with it. I will try the adapters for sure on the n64 I imagine it's great the others I may pick up a 8bit do. Thanks for the info and the comment.

Could you tell me what software emulators are you using?. I've played Tekken 3 on my PSone and Retroarch (Bettle PSX), but I didn't notice any differences. Notice that I'm emulating on a powerful pc with a g-sync monitor and the best settings I could find regarding latency. I can perform combos and footsies with consistency on both. Other games perform the same to me. I know I’m comparing a under 300 fpga with a 1200 pc, but you can get the same experience with both.

@pacopen6364 yeh I get that psx emulation is ok especially on pc id guess. But the Saturn and N64 are far from perfect and the FPGA does such a good job at them. Also the size of this makes I great for under the TV. 📺 thanks for the comment. Perhaps he was using PI before

I am also working on my old Acorn Atom. Many years ago I lent that computer an acquaintance of mine, and got it back in non-working order. I have no idea what happened to it, and lost all contact with that acquaintance, so I cannot ask. I got it working to the point it display's "Acorn Atom" and the prompt. But the keyboard is unresponsive. I took a measure on those key's an most of them are simply not functioning. The big problem is - I have the same key switches as the model in the video has, but these switches are simply not longer available (as far as I know that is). If somebody knows where I can order new ones then please let me know. I can 3D print a matrix replacing the metal keyboard and place modern key switches on it. But that would, of course, make the Atom not longer an original. I am now dubbing what my next step should be. I think temporally do that matrix solution until (or if) I can get a hold of those original keys to get the system at least back in working order... I did the same with my (even older) Cosmac Super Elf, and it is fully functional again (I only have to find a good replacement for the original FND500 numeric display's that went very dim over time). It would be nice if I could add that Acorn Atom to the "working order" collection. Anyway - You did a nice repair, and I am happy to see that great oldie in working order again.

If you want your plastic screw holes to last longer, gently turn the screws backwards until they click, which is the screw finding the thread. Then tighten clockwise. Never actually seen an Atom other than static pictures. You can definitely see how it evolved into the BBC. Its quite telling how few were sold compared to the ZX80 / 81 due to their much lower price, even though they were much inferior machines. Its a lot more similar in approach (and price) to the US computers of the same era with a good keyboard and plenty of expansion. Makes you wonder what would have been had Sinclair not have undercut everyone on price for the first real UK home computers.
@Retro4u
@Retro4u 26 күн бұрын
Yeah you can definitely 👍 see the resemblance to the bbc micro. It's strange machine can't get over how the chips are on the underside :). But it's still a micro and without these early machines we would have not had the machines of today they all belong somewhere on a family tree. Yeah Sinclair price was the selling point even though they were cut back on many things like you said keyboard was especially terrible on them but they worked sort of. I mean he thought he had the bbc contract in the bag. Thank goodness for the micro :)
