I’m fully into this psychedelic direction. Very nice to listen and think at this pace. The only production thing I wanted was maybe voice mix could be slightly higher sometimes. Trackspacer is great for sidechaining to let voice cut through music stem. Some thoughts which came up below. Maybe what I felt overall is maybe the value in these ideas is often in some murky grey areas. Optimism : I think its important for creators (and especially innovators) to learn to be completely fine that many visions of the future cannot be accepted by the general population at this time and might not be in their lifetime. This isn’t a reason to not continue with that creative activity. It’s also not arrogant to listen to but still dismiss the opinion of vast swathes of the population, it’s just believing in your own unique perspective. Advertising: I think the amount of advertising and social manipulation we are exposed to now is, in the words of David Lynch “Total Fucking Bullshit”. It’s unfortunate that ignoring them or violating TOS with adblockers is the only option. I just press M whenever an ad appears on KZbin and take it as a moment to meditate. But I increasingly feel even this constant interruption is unhealthy. Media and Reality: Great point that accepting that media is reality is a point of failure. But in that bath water is some baby - great art is still media and can be a reflection / crystallisation of reality, things we can only explore through those means. Perhaps the problem is that so much of media is utter shite “content” which is really just a manifestation of egoism or capitalist growth and has little other reason to exist. Social Media vs Gatekeepers: I don’t believe in the analytics of social media platforms informing creativity at all anymore precisely because those numbers manipulate our personal creative instincts towards clicks. I would agree with Rick Rubin that artists should follow their own instincts, indeed learning to decipher them, not analytics driven by others or worse big tech algorithms, is perhaps the core of art. The algorithms aren’t about giving people what they really want as holistic human beings, they are about giving people what they will get quickly addicted to. But I don’t believe in the old gatekeepers either. I think we could design systems which do help people find things which would be really amazing and enriching for them. But there is simply more fast money in manipulation. Chaos: I absolutely agree that everything is chaos and there are very few things which happen by design. Completely accepting chaos, particularly accepting chaotic or harmful human behaviour or social structures makes me nervous though. There is a best seller at the moment called “Let Them” which feels slightly dangerous in that it could endorse absolving of social responsibility. Of course this has been a criticism of many schools of thought for a long time - eg someone like Eckhart Tolle’s ideas of complete acceptance of “now”.

Ahhh Rob thank you so much for taking the time to tune in, be so thoughtful and share your thoughts! Glad you like the psychedelic direction. It felt very *right* doing it. Presciently to your point about ignoring the algorithms of the big platforms, this video is the worst performing on the channel so far. But that feels almost like a test of artistic resolve rather than a signal to abandon this line of creative inquiry. The main Tim Exile channel is where I'm putting the thrust of my metric-driven instincts as that is where I hope to make a living in the material sense. This is the place where I want to make a spiritual living - which is to say tuning into everything in my experience which you can't put a number on, as much as that is possible.

@@LuckiestTimAlive "the worst performing on the channel so far" Ha perhaps thats actually a good metric. Or perhaps just another external red herring! In the health related work I do, I'm constantly torn by the contradiction, and sometimes hypocracy, of using social media as a channel to reach people who are often being harmed by that very thing. Is it like cutting a bit of vitamins into a dose of crack? Its a moral minefield.

Philosophy can be like nostalgia under comfortable circumstances, rather than decisiveness under duress. I agree with your views about AI's hype eventually being a bubble of Technical Optimism, whereby, after its capabilities have been overstretched, its meniscus of glory will rupture. Creativity is often uncomfortable, as constriction can often allow the greatest freedom. 🤔

If you had fun making it, that's the important part 😊 I had fun watching it. Edit: just finished, what a great conversation, thanks for sharing it with us. I don't think any other editing style would have been as good. In terms of "representation", it felt like a more authentic capturing of the feeling and thoughts of your conversation and your trip. Space for thinking and wandering.

Catching up on what's been going on. Very glad that you came out of this on your feet. My own experiences are less brutal, but I've seen enough in other people's lives - especially the refugees I've tried to help over the past 10 years - to feel exceptionally lucky. I try to actively appreciate everything that is good in my life and pay it forward whenever I can.

First of all there has to be some grounds for a relationship which I believe are beyond our choice … fe. Capability to bond connections..

So his studio sort of doubles as a mini tech museum? Haha. I was really enjoying the talk around the idea of "never give up" It really is thrown around as like a token motivational phrase. But never give up on what? That's the key element. Some people believe, for example, that marriage is for life. So should an abused partner never give up on the marriage even at the cost of their physical or mental health? Some would feel they should never give up, to fight for their marriage with counselling etc - but this isn't always the way. Maybe, it should be that the abused partner never gives up on themselves - that part of their journey on never giving up is to find a way out. They haven't given up on their marriage, they're not giving up on themselves. It's a tricky one and that's just a little example. Some things we do need to give up on. But ultimately, never give up on striving for a better life and a better you and the betterment of the people around you. That's the ultimate "never give up" journey I think! And maybe on that day, you destination was indeed destined to be the car park. Still felt like an adventure to me!
@LuckiestTimAlive3 ай бұрын
This is so on point! The hardest part of not giving up is getting clear on what you're not giving up on. Mazlo's hierarchy of missions?
