What's wrong with dust in perlite? And what benefit does a larger particle size have? Could you elaborate, please?
@Josh_Green44
@Josh_Green44 Ай бұрын
@@noob19087 the dust clogs the mix and impedes drainage. When the particles average around 1/4 inch, the mix is held open, and the perlite itself reduces the overall waterholding capacity of the mix.
@noob19087

@@Josh_Green44 Wow, that was a quick answer. Thanks! Does the same apply to vermiculite, then?
@Josh_Green44
@Josh_Green44 Ай бұрын
@@noob19087 vermiculite is much worse. It is a moisture retentive spongy mush when wet and loses structure quickly. It should only be used in temporary mixes to start seeds or root cuttings.
@noob19087
@noob19087 Ай бұрын
@@Josh_Green44 Very interesting. I thought water retention was the point of vermiculite? Maybe my area (Finland) has drier air, but in my experience it seems to have helped plants from overdrying. My chilies have also seemed to like it, but then again those will probably go one to two years whereas my lemons will live for decades. Is this based on your own experience, or do you have literature I could look into further? Googling "vermiculite bad" doesn't give much results, just something apparently about asbestos. By the way, thanks a lot for your time and knowledge, I appreciate it!
@Josh_Green44
@Josh_Green44 Ай бұрын
@@noob19087 vermiculite makes a mix too wet, so yes it holds too much moisture and not enough air. Perlite provides that better balance of moisture and aeration.

Thanks, Peter! It would certainly provide a powerful trunk for multiple grafts....however, I don't even like avocado, and I'm rather indifferent to guacamole as well. Why would you do that? The point of using "Orchid Mix" is that it includes the binder component, and provides a sufficient amount of bark for folks who can't find bark by itself. Washing the mix would double the wastefulness and double the work.

@@Josh_Green44 just starting seeing your channel... lots of prunning you did ova da years... Interesting... you know, your avocado can give you fruits if you do the "anillado". That's a technique used down here in the tropics for avocado trees from seeds that take too long to bear fruits. That will induce flowering, hence fruit at some point.
