Avocado Pruning - Spring 2024

After a hard Winter in the greenhouse, the Avocado is out for its Spring pruning. It was completely defoliated by caterpillars, and I had to move it out of the greenhouse before it infested my precious citrus trees. But it survived the early Spring cold. Then came the deer predations. But it's in the garden now, and it will push out all new growth for the 2024 season. Stay tuned for updates!

It’s great to see your avocado is still growing, Josh! Maybe it would be worth grafting a variety onto it, or even a couple of different varieties?

Thanks, Peter! It would certainly provide a powerful trunk for multiple grafts....however, I don't even like avocado, and I'm rather indifferent to guacamole as well. If I *did* like avocado, though, I would get Lila and Mexicola Grande, which are both very cold-tolerant and can survive the Winter outdoors in my area.

@@Josh_Green44 those are some of the varieties I wished we could get over here as they might have a chance of surviving in my area too. I recently managed to get a Fuerte, that’s the first time I’ve even seen a grafted avocado tree for sale over here for years. But I think I’ll have to overwinter that one in my greenhouse like my citrus trees.
