Try fast and slow steady retrieve. The colder the water the slower I’ll work it usually.

Yrars ago I used a nice bamboo lip gaff. Great for retrieving and releasing bigger fish. Not so good for the lip.

@dennyf57 how about not just catching the fish for a following for starters? The fish are where they are and they swim around to feed. If you're catching them and not eating them the least you can do is gently release them to their habitat.
