Yrars ago I used a nice bamboo lip gaff. Great for retrieving and releasing bigger fish. Not so good for the lip.

I don’t fish off the jetty any longer, gave that up several years ago. Two reasons, first dragging these bass across the rocks significantly increases the mortality rates. The fish is already stressed dragging it across the rocks is certainly not smart. Second, it only takes one good fall!

​@dennyf57 how about not just catching the fish for a following for starters? The fish are where they are and they swim around to feed. If you're catching them and not eating them the least you can do is gently release them to their habitat.
