I live in the 3rd world. Hahaha your patients get lidocaine! Lucky them! I was trained to do it raw and have been doing it that way my whole career and so does everyone else. I think I'm going to start using lidocaine it should cut down the complaints - although few things sting like lidocaine. Silly question - I'm guessing it's lidocaine with NO epinephrine lol!

Why do nurses refuse lidocaine while giving an IV? 😢
@PainH8erАй бұрын
@@marystephens9150 I don’t think they refuse it. I think that most places don’t use it anymore because medications are more controlled. To me it doesn’t make sense to have to keep lidocaine controlled, but that’s the world we live in.

Why lidocaine first? Most facilities won’t allow that.
@PainH8erАй бұрын
@@yolandamcclendon9627 if you’re lucky enough to have access to it, it makes the IV virtually painless
@PainH8erАй бұрын
@@hdrykb except that with the lidocaine needle there is virtually no pain because the needle is so small. Using a very small needle to inject the lidocaine makes it so there is virtually no pain when the larger IV needle goes in.
@PainH8erАй бұрын
@@hdrykb Some patients report ZERO pain, as in they didn't even feel the lidocaine go in at all. And for those who did feel it, all you have to do is look at the patient's reaction. With lidocaine, the majority of responses are, "I barely felt anything. That was great." Without lidocaine there is grimacing, complaining, and even tears at times. So if you are saying that there is only a perhaps 1 point difference in pain scale, then I would be very skeptical if you have any experience whatsoever in using lidocaine for IV insertion. As to it taking longer, causing trauma, and costing more, I have to push back again. It might take 10-20 seconds longer (which patients would tell you is well worth it if it spares them feeling the IV needle). The trauma from a 30ga needle is negligible (especially considering the trauma from the IV needle will go in the exact same spot), and the procedure does not cost the patient more with lidocaine. We don't bill more for the procedure.
