in terms of speedrunner style games, the ones where you're aiming for the best possible time, I heard SEUM was pretty good. Never played it myself, though. ... I hope I live long enough to see the rainworld video :x

10 Second Shuriken seems like someone wanted to make Lovely Planet but without any of the polish. That screenshake on tossing a shuriken alone would drive me up a wall and not in a cool parkour way.
@fledered696720 сағат бұрын
1:46 Actually the game opening SteamVR without actually being in VR is a common bug on beginner project made with Unreal (on which 10 seconds Shuriken was very likely made). So the gamedev didn't actually plan to make their game VR, they were just lazy
@Graeldon19 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the info! I'll keep that in mind as I'm sure this won't be the last time we see it
@the_dark_jumper221114 сағат бұрын
I'd be hesitant to call it outright lazy. Unless you have a VR headset or receive a bug report, you wouldn't know this is happening. VR is still a niche, so for such a small game, neither option is very likely. The Steam Discussions only have 2 non-developer comments. Graeldon's review is the only review this game ever got, and even that one doesn't mention VR. So, yeah, I'm fully convinced they just don't know.

The steam VR thing is on by default in the engine they're using (I don't remember if it was unity or unreal that did it) and it's usually a sign of a really lazy development... Great start!

The second game looks ok, and I think the second game have benefited from a brief exposition too. Some reason to collect everything, or being in a medium stake heist designed by a wizard. It would have given explanation to having to replay the levels in reverse and drawn the players in. An old flash company called nitrome used to throw in about 30 seconds of exposition into their games, and that was usually enough to draw players in.

(13:42) Interesting how the game let you land on the corner of that spiky landmass. Shouldn't be too much longer before you get to 100% Orange Juice, though you gotta get through the heaps of 100 things games, starting with 100 Alien Cats. I swear the 4 worlds in 10 second Shuriken are the same worlds as in Cluster Truck... Well, I mean Cluster Truck has 2 to 3 times more worlds, but either the assets come from the same packs, or this is plagiarism.

That last game is really a "We have X at home" moment wrt 2D precision plaformers. Not bad or anything - just lukewarm. The generic/store brand version of games like Meat Boy and Celeste. At that price, I wouldn't complain, tho.

That second game seems pretty plausibly like it was just someone who liked that style of platformers and wanted to try making one for fun. Not a huge amount of effort, but just enough care that you can tell it's something they genuinely enjoyed doing and playing. It's nice to see these smaller passion projects get the spotlight now and then.
@cameronmcgurrin3724Күн бұрын
I wouldn't be shocked if this was somebody's first game that they made in their spare time after school. If that's the case, then this is quite a nice little game to start with.
@Dwyer695 сағат бұрын
It's actually a special type of game sub genre exclusive to steam, an achievement showcase game. It's purpose is to give you achievements you can use on your showcase to write a message or do some soft level of art. That's why every achievement is just a character on a keyboard. However what this game does different from most achievement showcase games is that it actually tries to be a fun little experience for the playtime instead of some asset flip that pumps every country's flag for pressing each letter on your keyboard. Likely as you said just someone doing a passion project and wanting to contribute to a unique subgenre. It's a good marketing tactic too because I would highly recommend the game to anyone who's wanting to get a large number of achievements to use for showcase since it's a great $1 time. With all respect to Grael if he sees this, he seems weirdly unfamiliar with the culture of PC gaming to be doing a series like this with the amount of details like that that seem missed from the videos. I think it really misses a lot of interesting and important details around this like, true indie nature of so many projects covered in the series.
@Graeldon5 сағат бұрын
@Dwyer69 I'm definitely learning more and more about some interesting niche areas of gaming culture, and a lot about game development and design as well. Achievement spam games aren't new to the channel though, so I felt it wasn't necessary to go in depth into why it was created that way, rather just mentioned that it's not something the average player particularly cares for
@Dwyer695 сағат бұрын

Shorts levels reminiscent of the 2010 mobile games era or time attacks can be good when done right. Your cut the rope, where's my water, mario knock offs , etc. the problem is that developers should incentive for going faster, not make it a limit.
