It's only a shame they stuck to retro pixels instead of simulating the vector graphics. Games like Asteroids, Battlezone and the old Star Wars game had a unique feel it's hard to compare to anything else.

5:45 I think Holly is meant to be a "jungle hero" type character, like Sheena or Tarzan (or Jill of the Jungle). That would definitely explain the leopard print bikini.

It took me a bit (pun intended), but I realized the colors, magenta and green, are one of the color pairs used on old Apple computers. So this game is technically 2 bit. cause it requires a bit to switch between Black-White mode and Green-Magenta mode. Still a very nice touch and still authentic to the time period it's trying to emulate.
@lancesmith82988 ай бұрын
And also I haven’t heard the OST at all 3 minutes in, but assuming that it doesn’t sound like complete garbage, then we also run into a higher bit soundchip. It doesn’t even take too many to scale up drastically; compare the NES 8 bit to the Sega Genesis 16 bit, and understand we’re trying to work 8 magnitudes lower. Hell, anything that is more complicated than auditory Morse code isn’t happening with only one bit.

I had a gameboy color as a kid, but my only game was not color. So the whole game was rendered in green. I thought "color" meant one color

That control scheme for the spaceship game does match Asteroids and Spacewar, so it fits with the theme. Even some more modern things like Nova Drift keep similar ideas.
@Dragnfly_mynamewastaken8 ай бұрын
I was just gonna let him know this so thanks for covering that. To me, it's all about how much the ship drifts and how quickly it turns. I've played versions of Asteroids where the ship turns way too fast, way too slow, or even never stops drifting in some direction.
@TomaszRyszkowski8 ай бұрын
also added to that the space your ship can drift through was limited making your ship just bounce of the walls all of the time. I can see how that would make the game borderline unplayabke with that control scheme
@aglavraowl49328 ай бұрын
I recall some DOS version of Asteroids being of similar level of frustration. lots of intetia, which makes the ship difficult to control.

You know, this actually looks like the kind of game my Mom would really enjoy! Also yeah, don't blame you for not being a fan of the Asteroids control scheme. I'm aware it's a classic, and it controls that way for a REASON, but I've never been a fan myself.

Maybe we need separate people to tackle each letter of the alphabet. Of course, the more common letters like S and T will have way more games than the rarer letters like V and X, so it would be a bit imbalanced.

The enemy damage system in the Harry game is interesting. I’ve played NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, and the on foot levels of that game use the same one-two hit system for taking down enemies. Granted, you use a ranged attack in those levels, but yeah, you really have to throw the second attack quick after the first or it won’t kill.
@Manectrix20008 ай бұрын
Rather than an explorer, I’d say that Holly is a bodybuilder. This is definitely more of a novelty game imo. It’s pretty great that they kept a consistent style with the enemies and added great variations on classic games.

I feel like to fit the "old-school" theme even more, they could add some book (pdf) with explanations of enemy types, full character stories and such. This game suddenly reminded me of the times when game covers were looking better then the games (like "what should you imagine when playing and looking at the lines and dots") and the books about games could be read like a short stories collection. (I don't know, if there were a similar type of books in the English-speaking space, but here in Russia, I still have a couple of "500 new games" books from 1990s. They contained hints, controls, stories - everything that wouldn't fit on a floppy disk or a cassette.)
