The instructions say I should disconnect the negative terminal from the battery first ?
@LockandKilo
@LockandKilo 7 күн бұрын
@@WaltBorchers-x3l anytime you work with anything electrical on vehicles it’s always going to tell you to disconnect the battery. Smart idea. The risk of someone starting the vehicle while you are working on it is possible. You never want that key to turn to ‘ON’ while things are disconnected as the ECU can log a fault code and your Check Engine light will pop on. Also, as it’s electrical, it always runs a risk of shock! Your battery is beneath the driver side floorboard. You can pop off the cover with 6 tabs you twist. The negative usually has a quick-disconnect. Per YT policy: *This is not professional advice and I am not a professional mechanic. A professional Auto Shop or Dealer are the only places who can give definitive answers to this question*

Hi, I have a shclage with the screw caps. How would I remove the caps? Thanks!
@LockandKilo
@LockandKilo 16 күн бұрын
Hi, you can use a small, flat head screw driver or a pick tool. Depending how far in the caps are pushed, you gently pry them. The smaller the tool, the less chance you’ll mark up the lock. The caps just press inside to put them back :)

@LockandKilo
@LockandKilo 25 күн бұрын
@@jsoutdoorz7390yeah, so all of your springs and top pins (flat pins) are the same depth on a Kwikset. So, the bottom (pointed pins) are what you really have to pay attention to. So, leave your key inserted into the plug while you insert each bottom pin. This is to help you see if a pin is incorrect in each chamber. All pins should be flush.

Unfortunately, these cylinders are not meant to be rekeyed. You can tear them down and gut them, however as the cam isn’t made to come apart, Salsbury instead sells replacements with keys.

@resecurelatch
@resecurelatch 27 күн бұрын
What if you replaced the glass with a high strength Plexiglass? It would take alot more effort for someone to get what is inside, I'm sure after a couple strikes (and the noise that would make), the perp would move on.
@LockandKilo
@LockandKilo 27 күн бұрын
@@resecurelatchso, the glass is designed as a “looking glass”, so the customer can come in, glance inside without needing to actually open the box. Plexi would help, but look at the screws that hold it lol, not exactly holding back much force. It’s a convenience thing and they do still make a glass version, but it seems to be made as it matches closely to these old versions. Other boxes have been made by brands with a much thinner looking-glass. Sometimes people have slammed these and broken the glass. These are generally kept inside of a building with some sort of access control. So, they aren’t as open to public reach.. so, I understand the convenience. But, they ultimately did end up going with full plate style doors like USPS cluster boxes eventually and those came with much better locking mechanisms as well :)
@resecurelatch
@resecurelatch 27 күн бұрын
@LockandKilo Full plate designs, Suck! They offer no elegance like we once had back in the day... when most were not looking to smash and grab everything not bolted down. Ahh, the "Good Old Days".
@LockandKilo
@LockandKilo 27 күн бұрын
@@resecurelatchyeah, unfortunately nowadays as PO Boxes are left open to the public at the Post Office and cluster boxes are too far from sight, looking-glass styles are gone. This one is just such a crazy wide version. I don’t mind the glass version with a strip of glass as a viewer on the left/right of the boxes. Gives it a nice look, can’t really reach through them. This one was definitely from the simpler times lol

Ever had this problem? I have to use the Drive-In Style because the keyed doorknob latch hole was already drilled to 1", i think. It looked bigger although i didn't actually measure it, but it was apparent the deadbolt was mortised and it wasn't. Other times i have seen these types of doors with both mortised in. I wouldn't even call mine a drive in---more like a light finger push. I don't know why the hell that was done because the deadbolt portion of the door was drilled to 7/8" i believe and mortised to accept the screwed in plate. I am not really happy with the loose fit of the keyed latch. I bought the steel cladded door at a Thrift Store and it didn't really appear to have been ever used. I am only using it in a detached garage so not looking to change it out because of that. I put in a Schlage set. Tried contacting them via email to see if there was such a thing as a larger diameter latch with the screwed in plate without needing to use the collar BUT no reply after several days. I can guess probably not. I might look into shimming it somehow to make the collar fit tighter. Someone else had brought up the same issue to the video and you had mentioned the collar might have been bent in shipping BUT that is definitely not my issue. The hole is just a bit too large to give the desired interference fit, in my opinion.
@LockandKilo
@LockandKilo Ай бұрын
Doors are always fun to come across, thrift store/salvaged doors are even more fun haha I have come across doors where I remove a standard kwikset and the hole for the knob is barely an inch tall and 2 ish wide… I have come across deadbolts where the installer cuts the hole about an inch diameter and removes the inner shield of the deadbolt, just using the cylinder and cover on the door. The things people do to doors doesn’t surprise me anymore, but it sounds possibly that the door you picked up was modified for the original owners lockset. It may not have “fit” right to whatever lock they used, they could’ve dremeled a bit more than normal to make whatever they had work. One thing you can kind of do with the collar is after installing it on the latch, use a flat head to widen the collar, but be super gentle doing this. You can fit shims as well and make it work. Shims will prevent it moving, coupled with the lock installed holding it in place, it can work. Not ideal, but worth a shot as it doesn’t sound like a heavily used door.
