Good topics. First week of having a new guitar and I hit the head stock on the top of the door frame and ceiling. Thankfully, no damage the was done and the mica kept the edges nice and sharp. Another point might be not to use the backpack straps on the gig case. Backpack straps on a guitar case is a bad idea.

Finish the rest of the chord progression. That's my favorite part. I use to leave my Martin acoustic in that tuning at all times just to keep up with playing the tune anytime I wanted and left my other three acoustics in standard tuning.

both of these work - stay away from flat so you will not get snagged or hung if you have an angle.

I came to understand that inversions can't "start" with the same note: first would be CEG (major chord we all know), second, EGC and GCE for the third; therefore, this is not about inversions.

Try playing it all the way on the third fret. Sounds more like what Del does. I call Dels an angry g run.

When someone like tony rice does a version of a tune like this is he basing his licks on the tonic scale or is he basing licks on the chord he’s in at the time? When I’m trying to learn a break I’m not sure if I should look at it as the tonic scale or the chord scale in order to break it down.

Brandon, just ‘found’ you and I am so glad 😊. As a beginner, I find what you do is so clear and not at all intimidating which makes practicing and learning a pleasure and something to look forward to. Thank You 😊

Thank you for your tutorials. Before this I finished the crosspicking for beginners tutorial but hearing here now „you can just add some crosspicking“ is making this song impossible for me… because how. What I‘m doing then sounds very different - and not in a good way ._.

Fairport Convention's "Matty Groves" (1969) is the UK ancestor / sibling (?) to "Shady Grove" - amazing version!!! Really shows the link between Albion and Appalachia.

When you start playing the three-note pattern, your playing doesn't match the notation. What about the eighth note?

Hi Brandon, I've been playing 54 years, I'm 65. Playing different styles etc through the years. Can play some Paganini, love Steve Howe of Yes, composition but I'm finding your videos helpful in getting the alternate picking helpful. I do quite a bit of alternate picking in many different songs and can fingerpicking quite a bit but bluegrass lead stuff is just constant alternate and, as you know, fast. Thanks for doing your videos. I'm from the east coast but I've been all over. Been living in West Virginia now for 8 years. I have only played with other people twice since I've been here so I'm on my guitar by myself every day. Anyway, your layed back teaching methods are also refreshing. Thanks again. Dan

What is the name of this song? The description says Jingle Bells but in the video its titled Cripple Creek. It doesnt sound like Doc Watsons song, either way i appreciate the lesson, i just wanna get it straight when my wife asks me what the name of the song is!

Good lesson. Thank you. I discovered (via Troy Grady's Cracking the Code) that my picking is more like some bluegrass players than shredders. I'm neither, but I'm tired of fighting a losing battle by sweating over lines that are incompatible with my picking technique. ;o)

Thanks Brandon. Been playing different styles for 54 years. I'm 65. This will help me quite a bit. Love the history as well. I live in West Virginia now, for 8 years so I thought it necessary...lol..the older people around here arent quite into Steve Howe or other fingerpicking styles. Will help in my dexterity. You probably wont see this as the video has been up for 6 years but I hope you're doing well. I have and will probably check out some of your other videos. Glad you put the playing of it first in your video. It helps knowing the tempo and shows , as you said, how it can sound cross picking if you are doing it solo. Might check out Sonora guitar lessons too. Billy Strings endorses them.
