Hi Paul, thanks again for all your videos, they are very informative for my own Roadster conversion, 115V nominal from 5 Tesla Model S/X modules and a Hyper 9 motor. I am splitting the battery packs with two in the front and 3 in the back. I saw you shared the CAD file of the rear subframe, did you draw this from scratch? I am asking because I need to know how accurate I should consider it to be. The rear subframe and its habitat need to accommodate not only a slightly bigger motor, controller and everything else, but also 3 of those rather unwieldy packs in a road legal casing.

Hi Simon, There have been some, I should do a new video :). After a lot of faf with the V5C it's back as a petrol car because it the engine type can't be changed if the car is post 2001, so after a short panick when they de-registered it it's back as a petrol car and apparently that's what it has to stay even though it can have an electric engine, unless I go through full IVA. So I finished off a few things, took out 1 day insurance and took it for an MOT (4 miles away)... it failed :(, the horn didn't work :D and the front suspension bushes have degraded probably because it's been sitting for so long so nothing too bad. At least I got to drive it, acceleration is ok although I didn't push it and limited it to 200A (500 is max), up to 45mph but plently more to go, pre-selected 4th gear seems best but range seemed poor, either I'm not charging properly or the old batteries don't take charge, probably the former. So stuff happened, if I lived close to work it would be great and I'd use it but I'm going to need to do more to have a reliable car for the 38 mile round trip on main roads. Might have to buy an old Leaf instead!.

I have been designing EV High voltage powertrain systems for automotive/transport over the last 10+ years. I appreciate the effort and passion involved in this project, but I am with VDLA on that... I wouldnt approve that car to be road legal, not because being before or after 2000, but because of safety concerns. The battery pack is far from safe by modern EV safety standards. It does provides motion for the vehicel, from electrical point of view is ok...but the crash performance in an accident event is far from being safe for the occupants, for recoveryt services and for emergency/rescue services. Not to mention has not been tested. The functions of a powertrain, when analyzed by modern safety tools as DFMA or similar, are not just providing motion but also providing safety. What will happen to the occupants, to other cars in case of a head on collision? IS it going to crush and invade the footwell compartment? going to cause a high voltage hazard for the occupants or even for someone trying to attempt a rescue? . Safety is a serious part of the design on HV powertrains. That said, The same applies for most of EV conversions out there done by LTD companies... they have probably done some crash test analysis....maybe are a bit better than a home base conversion...but I still got my doubts about how safe those conversions are.

@crispydoda 2 жыл бұрын
I think your comments about safety concerns are valid, although in this the capacity is limited to just 6kwh, low density and peak voltage is only ~100v, a massive difference from standard EVs at 350v+. I could choose to quadruple the power, fit a V6, move the fuel tank to the front, keep the same brakes and no-one would even question it, but I don't think that would be very safe either. I've build 2 kit cars in the past and feel that when you do a self build you are more aware of what makes something go and stop and what could break. EV conversions will become more common to keep older 'classic' cars going, these will probably only be novelties which like this one may only do a few 100 miles a year. If I want a daily supercar then I'll lease a Tesla, which is my ultimate plan :). The conversion process has been an interesting experiance and fun project, will be good to actually drive it :).

@@crispydoda definitively would love to share some track time with your project when finished. Tesla wise...dont thinkna 2ton car can be considered a supercar. A bad build is a bad build. Yours is a nicely done that and I am sure you have put incredible care. Is not about your skills which are more than good :) but about resources and cost required to build an EV powertrain to current standards....out of reach for DIY initiatives.

Recommendations for the future would be lithium iron oxide or lithium titanate. Titanate is great for fast charging also not prone to fires. Lithium iron oxide is great for power density but it's also slow.

@crispydoda 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham, still ongoing.. I sent it the change form in to the DVLA but got a reply saying I had to include serial numbers for steering, axles, etc!... after contacting them they said actually they only needed the chassis number. Since then I haven't heard back, that was 1 month ago and a follow up hasn't worked. So far the whole process has taken 4 months!

Hi, this is a bit of a list, at some point I'll put togehter a proper schematic but so far it's been pretty adhoc. Motor 50kw AC 35 HPEVS Controller 550A 80V (50kw) Battery charger (72v or 80v) Batteries 60Ah 8.2v (0.5kwh) - I'm only using 10 (of 12) but really needs 20off to give better range) gearbox to motor adaptor plate Battery mount frame Motor and gearbox new mount plates (set of 3 parts) Heatsink for controller Fans for heatsink Voltage convertor 72v (90v max) to 12v Main Contactor 80v Mains power inlet socket - IEC62196-2 (Type 2) Throttle pot assembly (only used part of this) Adaptor housing to fit pot to smart accelerator Vacuum pump Battery Gauge 12v 26Ah battery (replace normal 12v battery) Controller cable set with Ampseal 35way and motor control conn Coulomb counter (used for monitoring battery used/remaining etc) Vacuum switch Curtis instrument holder Vacuum resovoir 1000A isolators 500A shunt clutch plate - only used spline (ford fiesta mk1) Taper flange plate High current cable set - 50mm2 (per metre) Taper bush to fit on motor Ancillary connectors (panel mount + socket) 12v main fuse large fuse mounts 12v relay with fuse Forward/reverse switch Vacuum tube (per metre) 12v cables Red and black 10mm2 Andreson 50A connector for connection from charger to fuse 100A fuse 500A fuse cable conduit Cable terminal lugs for 10mm2 cable Cable terminal lugs for 50mm2 cable

What is the purpose of switching to Electric?
@crispydoda
@crispydoda 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Antonis, There are a few reasons: >Cheaper to run, cost should drop from 12 pence per mile (in the UK) to around 4p per mile >Charged by the sun/wind so no CO2 >More reliable >Faster acceleration >Smart automatic gearbox doesn't work very well >The clutch and alternator were both shot and needed replacing so engine had to come out >It's a fun and interesting project to do >I can't afford to buy a 'standard' electric car (that I like) >Lower tax band, (in the UK) >Why not :), dinosaur juice is for dinosaurs >It's cool!

Hi, The steering is not affected by removing the engine as it's electric, but it's so light to turn anyway I don't think it would be a problem even if it didn't work.
