Very ingenious application of readily available hardware. Good lateral thinking!

Nice job. In the US conversions we're very popular in the 90s and first part of 2000 and the price of a used conversion was easily over 10,000 but now with the leaf and Tesla a used conversion can be picked up pretty cheap here in the US. I'm working on a Porsche Boxster right now with the DC netgain 9 motor.

Hi Steve, It's expensive to find used Tesla's here, they are like gold dust. As soon as I could afford one I'll buy one. Even used Leaf's still hold their price well and it was pure luck that I found the 12 used cells I got. I can't wait to have this car on the road, I'm just so strapped for time I can't seem to get time to work on it. Good luck with the Porsche conversion, a great choice, we need more electric sports cars on the road :).

Thanks, time has been so tight recently I just don't have time to spend on the car. A quick dismantle and rebuild was the easiest thing to do right now. Should have some proper time in a couple of weeks time to get it all wired up properly... can't wait to drive it.

The gear change motor has its own 2 position rotation sensors so you could use hard coded rotations for each gear instead of relying on the separate position sensor to stop the motor on the correct gear. When the gearbox is usually taught to the car, MB Star uses the separate sensor to determine the position of the gears. Once it's done, the ECU doesn't use that sensor.

Would you be able to provide a parts list and links to them, when you say the break disc holes are cnc can they be tapped? Love this build, a video on removing the unwanted gears will be amazing

Thanks, Paul. Now for the gearbox video where I'm expecting much torturing of it for being such a laggy and enjoyment destroying piece of garbage, although that'll probably break YT's T&Cs despite being joyous for previous/current Roadster owners :D
@crispydoda6 жыл бұрын
The gearbox (and clutch) is what finally led me to do this. The clutch drive became snatchy in slow traffic so needed to be stripped down anyway and the life risking delay when pulling out on roundabouts was becoming too much to bear. I never used auto mode (or random change mode as it should be called) but I absolutely love the car and can't wait to have it back on the road as electric.

Absolutely love the disc adapter plate! How did you manage to source a hpev motor on this side of the pond as the cost of importing one would be huge?

Hi Robert, I was lucky to find the motor and controller on ebay a few years ago, at the time I didn't realise how rare these are here (for anything like a reasonable price). Probably doubled the value of the car by bolting that in :D.

How much space do you have between the subframe and the motor? Wondering if there would be any change to fit a bigger motor in there. Will also be interesting to see if the torque delivered from that motor will be too much for the smart gear box. Thanks for these videos, id love to try this one day, very interesting for sure.
@crispydoda5 жыл бұрын
Hi, You can see on some other videos that there is hardly any space between the motor and the frame, only 10mm or so. So it's about as big as it can be without frame mods. However, there are probably higher density motors now so they wouldn't need as much space. Yes, it will be interesting to see what breaks first, but I'll be taking it easy for a while.

Paul, I'm struggling to recall your expectations for the vehicle. Although lighter than a Leaf, I didn't think you were intending to use anywhere near the 24 or 30kw/hr of battery capacity that they had. what sort of range was your target ?
@crispydoda6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rhian, I've gone into more detail about this in comments in other videos, but in short I'm only fitting 6kwh of Leaf batteries in at the moment due to restricted funds, but hopefully will increase this later. 6kwh (at 150W/mile) should get me 40 miles if I'm lucky but I'd be happy with 20-25 miles as that is my commuting distance.

Are the four bolts that hold on the clutch plate strong enough for all the torque that the motor generates, to me they look quite thin? love the video by the way.
@crispydoda6 жыл бұрын
Hi Billy, The bolts are 4 x M6, the clutch plate holes were dia 6mm so I just went for those, I don't think they will shear but I guess the threads might stretch and they could work loose then who know so it's a fair point... after it run for a bit I'll be taking the unused gears out so can have a look then.
@billy1405726 жыл бұрын
I think they would probably be ok but it might be better if the spacer was the full width of the clutch plate in bigger holes or if the spacers were fixed in place and not loose, it just looks like the bolts will be putting all the torque against the thin metal edges on inside and outside of the clutch plate.

Hi, this is a bit of a list, at some point I'll put togehter a proper schematic but so far it's been pretty adhoc. instead of using that big electric motor and trans axle, why not just make the wheels the motors?
@crispydoda5 жыл бұрын
I think motorised wheels is a good idea, but as far as I know these are not available and it's more effort for me to design and build them rather than put a standard motor on the gearbox.

Hi Paul are these AC motors connected in star ??
@crispydoda5 жыл бұрын
Interesting question, I've always assumed they are connected Delta but have no evidence of that. The connections are not configurable on these motors so it's a simple case of connecting U,V, W directly to the controller.
