I bought the service manual and all is good. Manufacturer maintenance schedule is to protect the manufacturer, not the owner. 100K for first CVT fluid change is crazy. I do recommend using OEM Sp CVT1 fluid.

I have a 2005 Vibe base model with 5-speed manual transmission. I bought this car new and have driven it 195,000 miles including using it to commute to a job, as a work vehicle in construction, and as a work vehicle in farming. This car has been used, abused, worked hard, and almost beaten to death. The car looks like it has been through a war, but is still running (and falling apart). During the past couple months, I have spent a lot of time looking at information about 2024 and 2025 model year vehicles. So far, I haven't found anything I like as much as the Vibe. Guess I will look for a good used Vibe or Matrix. I want another one with 5-speed manual transmission.

Why??? The tag clearly states "do not change the oil"! By doing this, you are now at risk of voiding the warranty! The manual ALSO states the same...."no check, not service needed." You're crazy dude!
@TechMaxWare
@TechMaxWare 8 ай бұрын
I honestly cannot tell if you are being sarcastic, but more power to you. The manual clearly states that you need to change the fluid every 60,000 under "abnormal" driving conditions, which if you read those, are most folks driving conditions. This is a tactic used by most auto manufacturers now days to discourage necessary maintenance in order to wear your car out faster, in some cases forcing you to buy a new one or charging you for expensive maintenance costs. If there are moving parts under such a load like your transmission, you need to replace the fluid. I'd urge you to do some more online reading on this and take better care of your car.

I’ll be doing weekend the dealership wanted 310 dollars to do this. They told me it would be a drain and fill. I purchased the oem fluid on line for 12.50 a quart. I would do this to simplify and accurately measure the fluid…. Use a new drain pan. Pour the old fluid in to a new I gallon Rubbermaid pitcher and mark a line on the side of it. Clean the pitcher and pour new fluid back into the pitcher at the exact mark that was made. FYI just my 2 cents on this procedure

You really need to track down and establish a relationship with a local toyota mechanic who is honest and skilled. They are out there. Don't go to a tire sales retailer for anything other than tires. They just don't have the skillset to do other work efficiently. There is nothing wrong with replacing tires two at at time on a front wheel drive car. When I take my car in for an oil change, I provide the filter and oil. I go out of my way to return to my regular oil change place. They seem to know what they are doing.

The reason you want to open or make sure you can open the fill plug first is to ensure that you can fill it back up. You dont want to open the drain plug, empty out the fluid, only to find you cannot open the fill plug

I just drained mine and got 3-quarts exactly to drain without dropping the pan. Mine had 53,000 miles and the fluid was dark but that probably means exactly nothing. The drain and fill plugs are 24mm and the process took about an hour. I have four more quarts that I bought and I'll probably drop the pan at 100,000 miles and change the filter with that one. I also put them on the scale prior to filling and I didn't expect weight to be a good indicator because the wear components are dissolved in the old fluid. Measured at the same temp, and the same volume as measured with a 50mL syringe, the dirty fluid was about 30g heavier for the same volume.
@bobg3221
@bobg3221 3 ай бұрын
If your fluid was dark, then yes it meant that it was dirty and it needed to be changed. I would never attempt to do this not on modern vehicles the old vehicle yeah drop the pan change the filter filled up with fluid run through the gears. you’re good to go, I’d rather go pay Hyundai 400 bucks to go and do this and hook their system up knowing that I have record that they did the service and not myself filter needs to be changed and cleaned as well. This is why they charge the amount they do there is a reason for this , but if your fluid was dark, then it was time for a change. I’m only wondering how dirty mine will be. My sonata has almost 82,000.

Thanks for the video just bought a 2023 Elantra. Do all my own service. So I was going to drain mine into a clear tube I got at home depot that holds 5 quarts measured in half quart increments then put in exact amount I drain out in lieu of using the level check plug on side of trans with trans hot and car running. from what I’m seeing in multiple videos is between 3-4 quarts. My question is how dirty was the fluid? Would you agree with doing it every 40k instead of 60k since your only exchanging half the fluid. Or did you do two drain and fills couple miles apart? Thanks again
@TechMaxWare
@TechMaxWare Жыл бұрын
I would say 45k is a good recommended mileage to change the fluid. Mine was pretty dirty. Now that might have something to do with it being the first fill in the car with it being brand new, yet typically with CVT type transmissions, the recommended is 45k. I only did one drain and refill which is what you saw here, simply because the fluid itself is stupidly expensive. Probably another reason I would recommend every 45k to try and keep cleaner fluid in it.
