Could you use a pencil over the top on a separate sheet of paper, then shade like on a sticky note?
@drawwithmikeКүн бұрын
I call it INDIRECT INDENTING. It involves indenting through a sheet of tracing paper, or Mylar in my case. That permits you to plan the indents ahead of time, and is a good method if you're new to indenting. I'm not sure what the "sticky note" part refers to, but I've covered Indirect Indenting in another video - however, it's only available at DrawWithMike. It never worked well for me, so I discarded its use. Look up JD Hillbury (jdhillbury.com), as I know he's used the method. If you're a DrawWithMike member, you can watch my Indirect Indenting video in the Basic Techniques section. Or go here to purchase it: sibleyfineart.com/draw-with-mike-videos/ds015-indirect-indenting.htm

And if I may add , turning the picture upside down and drawing it will help with drawing what we see ,instead of what we think we know
@drawwithmikeАй бұрын
True, James. I agree, and thanks for bringing that to our attention. However, in my opinion, you should only do that when absolutely necessary. Only during the guideline stage. And NEVER while you're working on the actual drawing. While I agree that "turning it upside down" does permit you to see what's really there, it's also NO LONGER THE SUBJECT YOU WERE DRAWING, and it becomes a drawing exercise. I want it to feel real while I recreate the living subject. So I NEVER turn my drawings upside down at any time.

I have a general question, Mike. Do you allow to take your drawings as reference?
@drawwithmikeАй бұрын
Yes. No problem - as long you don't reproduce it commercially. Also, if you want to try drawing this yourself, you'll find everything you need at www.DrawWithMike.net. It's not free - sorry - but £6/month (or about $7 USD). Look for the GROUP PROJECTS forum in the Support Forum. If you want to use any of my other drawings as references for your own, that's OK, too. Just don't try to use it commercially.

This was really a great demonstration, thank you! One question, you discarded the Spectralfix because it's manual, and I indeed had bad experience with blobs. Is it possible to pass by the problem by buying an empty aerosol bottle?
@drawwithmikeАй бұрын
I honestly don't know, because I moved to aerosols and stayed with them. It might solve the spitting problem, but I'm not willing to take that chance. If I've spent three months on a drawing, I really don't want to risk damage by using a possibly unsuitable fixative. I use Winsor & Newtons Workable fixative these days - and I KNOW that works.
@MrsCuriosАй бұрын
@@drawwithmike Thank you, Sir, I was so much in favor of this non toxic variety. I'll try to get the one you recommend. One of these days your paper will arrive here, cannot wait to see and feel it!
@Dantick09Ай бұрын
How many layers do you use?
@drawwithmikeАй бұрын
Three for the Cockatoo example - but "as many as it needs" would be more accurate. For simply fixing the final drawing... much the same. A few LIGHT coats, with additional fixative floated lightly over any particularly dark areas. That's not so much to fix those areas as it is to remove, or at least dull, the graphite shine. And that dulling really does make the darks POP!

Good to meet up with you here, Jo. At DrawWithMike, the Basic series covers all the techniques, but you'll find the Creative series covers topics that work regardless of the medium used. I'm working on the final video now (Drawing Trees), then the future videos should help you even more. In this case, negative drawing is applicable to both your watercolour and pen work - given that they share a lack of white with graphite. Yes, I know you can use an eraser, but that never produces the sharp edges of realistic shapes, where negative drawing does.

How the heck was anyone ever expected to figure all this out without instructions lol this was even less intuitive than getting their mars carbon refill box open for the fist time… and I can do the Rubik’s cube dammit! 😂
@drawwithmike3 ай бұрын
When I'd finally figured it all out, I was inundated with questions. So, I really did have a copy and paste answer. Although, why Staedtler thought we wouldn't need instructions, I have no idea.
@TerryJP223 ай бұрын
I have had one of these for over 4 years and wished it came with better instructions. But recently I found out I was using it incorrectly due to several reasons. One reason was that I recently found out that the Staedtler 2 mil mechanical pencils I bought online were too wide to properly fit in the hole for sharpening. Not knowing any better at the time, I had to press out almost an inch of graphite just so it would go deep enough to get properly sharpened. I had to very carefully and slowly sharpen the tip due to the lead being more prone to break since the lead was out so much while trying to sharpen. The other reason is I didn't know what the two holes were for, but found out recently. it was to set the lead length for sharpening. I found it very strange, this does work for my mechanical pencil except for an older one I have that is narrower. So I now know the problem I am having. The opening on the sharpener is too narrow for my new mechanical pencil to properly set in the hole to be sharpened. So, what I did was, I went to my wood shop and carefully drill out the opening wide enough so my wider Staedtler mechanical pencil will sharpen correctly. It worked and now I do not worry about breaking off large chunks of graphite. I would recommend that future Lead Pointer have the opening enlarged to accommodate the wider mechanical pencils like my own.
@drawwithmike3 ай бұрын
Thanks, Terry! I'm sure your advice and solution will be of help to many. Personally, I use Staedtler 780 clutch pencils, and a couple of 40-year-old Faber-Castell, that fit this sharpener, as do the cheaper Staedtler 788 pencils. I'm aware there are makes that don't fit, but I'm surprised to hear Staedtler's newer pencils don't. Do your pencils have a code number?
@TerryJP223 ай бұрын
Hello Mike, I have four newer Stardtler mechanical pencils. The codes are as follows three of them are 925-20 and the last one is 925-35-25.
@drawwithmike3 ай бұрын
@@TerryJP22 OK. That's why I asked for the codes. The Staedtler 502 tub sharpener is specifically made for their 2mm CLUTCH pencils (aka LEAD HOLDERS). Other brands will fit, as long as they are similar in diameter. The Staedtler 925 (and the 775 that I sell in my online shop) are, as you said, MECHANICAL pencils. They were not intended to be sharpened. If you're using a 2.0 mm lead and you need a narrower point, you simply pick up your 0.5 mm mechanical pencil and continue to draw. I said that with some confidence, although I don't use mechanicals, only clutch pencils. 🙄 That you've been able to bore out your 502 to accept mechanicals just shows what an inventive bunch we artists are. You now have the best of both worlds!
