Such an interesting conversation I’m really eager to start judo training Had a couple of concerns like the stuff Jiu jitsu athletes getting staff infection etc But I think at least it isn’t so bad on the spine and knees like jiu jitsu because it’s more standing up than rolling on the ground for the majority of time On the other hand thanks to my office job somehow got me nagging shoulder issue At the moment I’m recovering with expander workouts it really works wonders

Hi sensei, I’ve been learning a lot from your videos! I’m currently in the Kodokan in Tokyo as a 3rd kyu, and your more conceptual videos about Judo BASICS (kuzushi, posture, etc) have been invaluable. I was wondering if you could make a video or two covering similar basic principles in ne-waza? I feel like while I know “techniques,” (the Kodokan is extremely good at teaching them), I still don’t grasp the fundamental principles of newaza, so I’m struggling.

Wonderful video. thank you. I am an old guy now but I remember, as an Irish judoka, competing in the British Open in '84. Irish judo back then was all muscle and heart with poor technique but we absolutely loved it even though frustrated with our lack of good technique. I remember being in awe of the BJC guys who had impeccable technique and who were very successful. What would have happened to Irish judo if it had come under the influence of the BJC? I think it would have taken off like a rocket to be honest. It made me sad to hear you guys discuss how great talent and potential is knobbled by bureaucratic egos. I remember Neil Adams being a big 'star' back then and it seems ironic, that as a commentator today, he seems to be a big supporter of the complexity of competition rules that, for me, is emasculating judo as an art form. Anyway, thank you guys, for your passion and hard work that is helping to show the purity and beauty of Judo as a wonderful martial art. Perhaps it will take future generations to learn from your inspiration and overcome the political mindset that is killing the full integration of getting everybody involved and being able to contribute. The more people and mindsets get involved then we become greater than the sum of the parts. Keep going! Don't stop! Even though I don't do judo any more I love your channel which I recently discovered.

Thank you for the great interview I am also of the opinion that judo is moving in the wrong direction in many areas, with too much emphasis on performance, performance, performance, which does not meet the standards of Jigoro Kano, who was and is primarily about educating better people, not just in sports , judo, senses but also to convey values I am very excited about the further parts of the interview

Would you have to repair the back patch if the top corner is torn for a competion
@SampsonJudoАй бұрын
Depends on the level of competition. On the EJU/IJF tour they may ask if you change the gi if the patch is loose. They do this to protect fingers as they could get trapped in the gap between the patch and the gi.

What a fantastic video, much appreciated to both of you,😊 the memories came flooding back I was very fortunate 30 years ago to train under Sampson ( Sobel Judo club) I was there for 2 years , it was one of the best experiences of my life ,looking back with fond memories. ( I am 63 now) Sampson was an incredible teacher, so passionate and inspiring. He always gave 100 % to his students no matter who you were from a novice to a black belt treated everyone the same! , then as I progressed i got invited to join in on Thursday night and watch advanced training methods took my judo to a new level .it was something else ! His methods of teaching was exceptional the various throws, ground work ,explaining in detail every aspect so beginners like me would also understand was a big part of the club,😊. I never knew his background ( until I watched the video, Wow brilliant can't wait to the next installment ) Its a shame politics got in the way of his career, but the man Sampson is, it didn’t stop him from sharing his vast knowledge and experience, giving back to others, Its whats matters, his life has touch so many. Fabulous 👌

Do you need approval from some association to start a judo club in the UK or is it optional? Would be nice to do a video about all the legal requirements and hurdles for those who have the ambition of opening one. Would also be nice to learn more about British Judo and what it takes to compete in the British Nationals.

If you want to join a federation you’ll need to follow their rules and regulations. There are ways to be completely independent but it’s a little more challenging.
@RandomETC-wg5hkАй бұрын
@ Thank you for the Answering. What are the main challenges if you don’t mind me asking? Is it around insurance or are there a lot of permits you have to get, does it become difficult to compete in tournaments?
@SampsonJudoАй бұрын
@ I explain some of it in the podcast but to be honest it’s a long and complex topic that would take too much time to detail as a comment

What an episode!! Truly enjoyable storytelling and words of wisdom. One thing I will say is that loyalty & gratitude are true signatures of a person. A trait not often seen or easily discarded for ambition, “opportunity” or “money” these days. Despite regrets of not going down the Olympic route, you have a business, a family, a son who shares your passion, built up a special Judo club with appreciative, capable & very talented students. Not too many can say this when they look back at their path. Your loyalty, gratitude & respect for your Sensei & organisation has been a blessing and not a curse. You have been rewarded. It’s important younger viewers, especially judokas, watching this appreciate the significance of loyalty & gratitude. More doors & blessings will indeed open up to you too. Looking forward to the next episode!!
