Growing up in the UK during the 80's and 90's, there are lots of game shows from my childhood I remember which can be considered lost media to a large extent. But there's one in particular which has entirely disappeared. For years, I remembered a daytime game show I liked from the late 80's hosted by Jeremy Beadle. It had a very short run, and I couldn't remember the name of it. After many years of trying to find out what it was, someone finally told me that it was called Born Lucky. There is a brief article about it on ukgameshows website, and that is about the limit of any information you'll ever find. Virtually nobody remembers it, and there hasn't been a hint of footage ever to appear online. For my money, this has to be one of the most lost game shows ever. Another largely lost game show, this one airing in prime time in the mid 90's, featured Bradley Walsh as host and was called Midas Touch. This one ran for two series, but struggled in the ratings and was cancelled despite ITV trying to promote it quite heavily. It has never been rerun, and there's currently only one short clip available on KZbin. A complete episode from a home recording did once emerge, but has long since been removed. Other considered to be somewhat lost media UK game shows I can think of include; Odd One Out, Turnabout, Tarby's Frame Game, Runway, Cyberzone, Busman's Holiday, and series one of Wanted. I can think of loads, but they're the ones which spring to mind first. One notable element of UK game shows involving lost media is the theme tunes and scores to several shows produced by Central in the 1980's. There was an incident where multiple music master tapes were mysteriously lost in the late 80's, and many big shows from the era now only have their theme tunes and scores preserved on the recorded episodes. The big problem with trying to recover them from these recordings, is that nearly all of them are obscured by applause and other such noise to a large extent. Themes to Family Fortunes, Price Is Right, and Blockbusters are among those not known to exist in a clean, complete, and good quality form. Blockbusters is of particular note, it has become something of a holy grail among some circles to discover it. Several related variations survive, but the actual broadcast arrangement from the 1980's is not known to survive in a clean form.

An added footnote is match game was short lived bc the affiliates would not air the show because the answers were way too vulgar for daytime tv instead of being merely tongue and cheek like the previous versions. One episode had the contestant and the whole panel bleeped for a dirty answer.

That would have been December 12, 1978 OAD if I remember right, meaning it is from season 7, which is currently embargoed from airing due to the furs as prizes being more prevalent than ever in that season. It’s likely why we will sadly never get to see the episode OAD January 2, 1979 (first episode of ’79, too...), which featured the return of the commercial break after the Showcase and bids on them and before the results were read by Bob. It is quite sad and unfortunate that CBS hasn’t seen fit to lift the embargo since Bob is no longer with us, sadly. Could be they just want to honor his legacy as an animal rights activist.

the 1978 Tic Tac Dough pilot also seems interesting as well. That and the fact that pre-1988 daytime episodes of Sale of The Century are rare as well.

Both this and Beat the Clock were included in the ten-pack collection Imagination released around 2008(?). I have a copy of that 10-pack. Don't have any answers for you as I've never actually tried to play it myself, and I also don't have immediate access to it as I've just recently relocated, but I can confirm it does at least exist in that form.

About the American Gladiators material from a longtime observant fan who used to play Assault in his basement: > The episodes 58 & 94 that you mentioned never aired here in the NY area that I ever saw. So for me, they were always skipped. > Even more so, Episode 92 (Spencer Street vs. Willie Cooley, injured winner Elizabeth Pepe vs. Yvonne Montalvo) was ALSO skipped in the NY area during first run, meaning in the 1st half of season 4, we only got FOUR prelim matches and jumped right into the quarters. Episode 92 only first popped up around here in cable reruns, and the suggestion that the episode was edited/released later was furthered by the addition of the "This Game" score graphics after each round that wasn't present until later episodes of the season. (Sidebar: I also wouldn't have known that there was an International Challenge 1 without visiting family once closer to Philly that happened by luck to have that episode on. NY wasn't showing that one, either.) > We should also acknowledge the footage from existing episodes that also has gone missing. For some reason, when rerun years later on cable, the aforementioned Episode 60 somehow lost Craig Charles' half of the men's Hang Tough event (it skips straight to Mark Ortega's part now). And then of course, the one set of footage NO ONE has ever seen: What exactly WAS the "Women's Swingshot" game in the Dark Season 1 that the ladies played in the prelims instead of Breakthrough & Conquer? All we ever got were the scores, but no gameplay footage ever to this day.

One fun fact about ""Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour". Did you know that Butch Hartman (the very same one behind such shows as "The Fairly OddParents", "Danny Phantom", and "TUFF Puppy", among others) was a contestant on the Squares portion of the show at one point? On one of his episodes, Jon asks him just before a Squares game what he planned to do with the money he had won up to that point, and Butch says about going to college at USC, "to learn animation". One of the biggest names of American animation got his start on a one-season wonder.

I live in New Mexico and have worked in Films in since 2004. I have worked on several Movies and TV Series including Pilots, that were never picked up due to many reasons. So many good memories and experiences that are never seen by the general public. I recently started sharing my stories and experiences in film on my KZbin Channel here. My experience on Finch with Tom Hanks was the first video I uploaded to my channel. And then I recently uploaded another one a couple weeks ago discussing how I was going to be sharing more of my personal experiences on set. I'll definitely share my experiences on some of these Pilots or films that never made it to the cutting floor!

Interesting compilation. For the last one, I assume: 1. Because it was so early in the show's run, they hadn't come up yet with the disclaimer they would eventually use when contestants were found to be ineligible. 2. Even if they had the disclaimer, they were pretty much forced to scrap the episode if it was because the contestant was the wife of a CBS employee, The show had just premiered and was adjacent to The Joker's Wild, hosted by one of the big perpetrators of the 50s quiz show scandal, Jack Barry. I'm sure they wanted to avoid any appearance of inpropriety.

Not all pilots become nothing some are released as TV movies, another was reedited and added other filming to became an episode of Star Trek using footage of the original pilot with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike. Some pilots start out as episodes of other shows what they call back door pilots. Man from uncle had spin off girl from uncle. Six million Dollar Man* spin off the Bionic Woman first introduced on show*.

In the '90s, crewed on a TV pilot called "Desert Breeze" about a bunch of wise guys going legit who bought a casino. It was very Sopranos-like. Jon Faveau starred as well as the late Cliff Gorman. The late, great Michael Gershman was the DP. Looking for decades for the pilot. Since TV crews work 16-17 hours a production day, never knew if it was aired. I know it was never picked up.

To go further back in time (since all of these were made in the last twenty years or so), once upon a time your average teevee show was introduced to the world via a TV movie that served as its pilot. This was how the networks determined whether or not this thing was worth investing in. The show 'Alias Smith and Jones,' for example, clearly had one, but if you watch it in a streaming capacity these days, all you get is callbacks to it in the opening sequence. I mean, you get what the premise is and what happened, but...

I believe the original Simpsons pilot is lost . The Simpsons kids were watching The Happy Little Elves and the elves were killed by a bear ( one elf was decapitated by the bear). The original company that made the pilot had added that without pernission, The original company was fired and the pilot had to be remade.

I remember receiving a "self-erasing" VHS tape to preview a pilot episode back in the mid-nineties. It was for what became Two and a Half Men but did not have Charlie Sheen in the episode. It was completely different than the actual first aired episode. They really mean what they say when the tape will erase upon rewind, I had a blank VHS tape after I watched that episode. That was my only opportunity to do such a review, the show went onto fame but NOT because of my opinion or the now blank tape...lol

Interesting sidenote concerning Thomas the Tank Engine's additional links to Rock & Roll Royalty. The chief model maker in the early days was Tim Staffell, who over 10 years earlier had left a Psychedelic Rock power-trio called 'Smile'. The guy who replaced him on vocals in that band? Freddie Mercury. The band picked up a new Bassist and became Queen...

Teletoon no! Although I'm not surprised. The channel has just been Cartoon network for about a decade now. As for pilots, it's a shame than those in charge don't see them as having any value. For fans of the shows,. they're a peak behind the scenes. For general audiences, they can show how shows go through changes during production and show how much more polish the final show can have. And for creators, they can give a glimpse into what level of work is being pitched, rather than only really having the final products to go off of. There's really nothing to be lost by letting people see them, and even in cases of not so friendly pilots to kids shows, kids grow up really quickly and can appreciate that difference when they are just a little older.
