Most people seem to prefer part 2 over part 1 but I've always preferred the original slightly more... There's just something about it.

Agree, 3 or more, 5 element ninjas is NOT a Venom film. I think it's a good movie, it's very stylish with the flags and choreography, the US titles (Spearmen of death) make me howl with laughter and that guy is also in Ten tigers of Kwangtung but.... I don't think it's top tier for me. It's too long, a bit light on action and I would pick around 10 other Venom films before this, but hey we like what we like. Always good to hear what you think mister.

I'm almost finished watching all the movies in Vol. 1 and you're the only person reviewing the actual movies on KZbin, so cheers! I was also disappointed by The Bells of Death. I read on Letterboxd and Twitter that Vol 1 was worth buying for this movie alone, and of course you also mentioned that Tony Rayns feels that way too in his interview included on this set. The story is of the hero's journey (thinking of The Searchers and Star Wars specifically for this one), but it isn't long enough to flesh out his character arc and how he transforms into a martial artist, and frankly the action is more notable for the handheld camera work than the choreography or sets in which they take place. My favourites out of the set so far are The Assassin, The Jade Raksha, The Sword of Swords, Invincible Fist, and Dragon Swamp. Looking forward to continue watching your vids as I very slowly make my way through Vol 2 and 3.

I like the movie but it’s one of Chang’s least appealing movies for me. Some great gory death scenes it’s just a slog getting to them. I’d probably like it more if Wei Pai wasn’t in it. He was already gone before the film came out, and I’m not sure he wasn’t intended to be in some more scenes. I felt like his pompous swordsman was a parody of Chang’s wuxia heroes from the late 60s to early 70s. Wei was the only one of the Venoms to not sign a contract so when he left Shaw’s high and dry, he went to work on Indy movies and flaked out on the makers of what later became known as GOOSE BOXER (1979). The best part of the movie for me is the fight between Lu Feng and Chiang Sheng. They stole the movie. The color schemes are attractive to the eye although The bulk of the picture takes place on the smaller studio sheds and the ending takes forever to end. But a lot of people love it. It’s just midlevel for me.

It's a good movie, and a lot of people rank it way up there. Those people tend to also highly rank Five Element Ninjas - they both have that cartoon feel to them. For me, that means it's the kind of movie I watch in a certain mood, and enjoy, but wouldn't be in my top 5 Chang Chehs. Some of the slightly less over-the-top would be, like Masked Avengers or Magnificent Ruffians. Crippled Avengers falls somewhere between the two groups - outlandish but not insanely so.

Hey man, it's Mitch from the comments here. I am a big fan of this film, and I know it's got it's critics. It kinda reminds me of a western and Life gamble has a similar vibe. It also is a bit cartoony (Brass head, Long Axe & Copper Toe etc) I was going to say it's a tragedy, but pretty much every Chang Cheh film doesn't have a happy ending - sorry if that's spoilers. I've watched it loads and after hearing your thoughts, I am going to watch it again. Cheers mister.

I wasn’t a big fan of this one either. I remember liking the first 30 minutes and it went downhill from there. There’s a significant difference in Chu Yuan’s swordplay movies in the 70s and the ones he made in the 80s.
