Great video! Thank you. A couple of questions: doesn't spraying water over the covered areas (to shrink the tissue) end up bleeding the lozange colors? What about the the nitrite dope? Can you apply over the shrunken areas without smudging the colors?
@Watchingthevideos9922 күн бұрын
Thank you. The key to the process is the Epson Durabrite ink. That ink is waterproof so not affected by spraying with water. And you can also use dope or Krylon to seal the tissue without a problem of bleeding. It's possible to use other inks, but you need to seal them with a spray of Kylon piror to covering but you won't be able to water shrink. Thanks for watching!

Hi John - was browsing model videos this morn and while watching yours I saw the balsa stripper in action. Can you share the maker and source. Mike
@Watchingthevideos99Ай бұрын
Hi Mike. That's a Jim Jones balsa stripper. An excellent tool. Unfortunately, no longer available but you might find one on Ebay. Hummingbird Model Products makes an excellent copy of the stripper, and I believe it's still available. I had one but sold it since I have the Jim Jones. The Hummingbird version is not cheap but is very well made. hummingbirdmodelproducts.com/tools/beht430u31cvqabn5di85sg8lvv6ol

If I built one of those, I'd probably have to either put a hook on it for catapult launch, or a finger brace for more vigorous hand launches. I'd certainly put in a finger box for launching on the R/C version...
@Watchingthevideos99Ай бұрын
My larger 30 inch version is launched with a light hi-start with 1/16th rubber. I'm not sure this model would take well to a hard hand launch but I guess you could try. It's not something I would consider doing with mine. Thanks for watching.

John, why glue each rib? If you do the perimeter, shrink and dope, the dope will attach the tissue to each rib.
@Watchingthevideos99Ай бұрын
That's why this video is titled "a slightly different approach" 😁 I've used the process you describe for 50 years, but first, this model was finished with Kylon not dope. I find gluing to each rib reduces the chances of warping during the shrink since you have individual panels rather than the power of one big panel shrinking. The Mt Fuji tissue has a pretty strong pull. It also doesn't work really good with dope as an adhesive. With Esaki on a smaller model, I would likely follow your process but on a recent project, I used my video process but didn't glue every rib and had great results. This process allows the wing to be flat on the bench when the tissue is first applied providing a perfectly flat wing. Whatever works best for you. Thanks for watching.

@Watchingthevideos99Ай бұрын
Yes, we appreciate what you say and it's certainly a difficult situation. I run a model airplane club for the kids at my middle school to at least introduce them to the hobby. Some are actually quite intrigued, and you can see they never are exposed by social media or their parents to a hobby like ours. I've been working with them for over 8 years now, a few have gone off to become aeronautical engineers and a few continued to dabble in models but nothing formal. Thanks for the watching.

A great aviator, died doing what he loved. Is there a video that anyone made of his last flight to see what really happened? They say the plane's engine caught fire. RIP Brian.
@GodsMan500Ай бұрын
I used to man the fire extinguisher when starting the DVIII’s engine and I flew several bombing runs with him. He was such a great guy. He never considered himself above anyone else. He had no problem grabbing a paintbrush and painting the hangers with us. He and I had many conversations about flying, planes, and life in general. He will be sorely missed.

These "small" projects are really interesting. I like building them thought I never get them to fly. Yours flew magnificently! Carving the prop is a skill I need to develop (and I need a small drill press somehow). Thank you for sharing!
@Watchingthevideos992 ай бұрын
We've had over a 1/2 dozen guys build these new and they all are flying. You might give one a try. The drill press I'm currently using was just over $100 from Grizzly. It's a miniature hobby drill press with varaiable speed. So far, working out great. You'll be an ace prop carver after a couple of attempts. Thanks for watching.

This flies beautifully! Too well for the roof beams.. A wealth of detail for basic tech here. I am somewhat envious of you John, for that beautiful narrow blade carving knife, and your prodigious skill in it's use. I bet this tool is a much prized one. The use of tape to mark bend points in wire is a great tip! Scrappy may be capable of being built mostly from the contents of the scrap box, and she may be apparently simple, but in build quality and flying performance she's much more than scrappy! Perfect film for basics. You make prop carving look easy!! Nice one John. 🌟👍

@Watchingthevideos992 ай бұрын
Hello. Thank you. The carving knife is a Swedish knife, a Mora Wood Carving model 106. Extremely sharp. A great tool for sure. I found mine on Amazon. Maybe $20. I'm running 0.060 rubber at the moment, I still expect to experiment with slightly smaller sizes. A rubber cutter is important if you're flying indoors. Thanks for watching.
