As a West Virginian who is quite familiar with the area and the C & O I would like to commend your rolling stock and layout. Excellent. Very close to actual. One tip if I might. Rail line telegraph poles in this area were drenched in creosote to protect the wood from high humidity. Therefore they were a flat dark grey, almost black. Keep up the good work and enjoy!

Thanks for your tip! I am actually in the process of installing pre-wired telephone poles along the line, so I'll blacken the new poles! Someday the signals will be lit and working too, a huge project.

This really took me back. I was a youngster in Hinton back in 1949-50. Your C & O whistling reminded me of the haunting whistle sounds echoing up thru the New River Gorge. It was surreal. The only thing missing was the sounds of the river near Hinton as it was dotted with boulders. I would hang out at the station after dark watching for the bats flying just above the rails thru the fog that was slightly lit by the street type lamps lining the platform perhaps a hundred feet down the rails. When a coal drag came thru, it took as much as 1 hour or so to pass. It went slightly faster than walking speed. With a distinctive click-click, click, click of the wheels passing over the rail joints, the coal drag would labor past the station. There was a chill in the air. It was an experience I have never forgotten……

Thanks for your comment! It's always good to hear from somebody who has actually experienced the real thing in the steam era. I've visited the area several times and even white-water rafted down the New River, but in modern times..

Awesome layout and weathering on your locos and rolling stock. Didn't the real #1644 have over fire jets on the sides of the firebox? or did that begin with #1645 and higher?
@0011jmha4 жыл бұрын
The last 15 Alleghenies delivered in 1948 (1645-59) had 8 overfire jets on each side. In my other video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKa9pqJ9mtxqrsk one can see them on the 1647.

Amazing layout! I've been dreaming about building my own N scale New River SD for 20 years - but I'm aiming for 1980 era with first and second generation diesels. Do you have a website with more information about the layout, and a track plan? I would love to see how you handled the C&O main crossing the river along the route. Great inspiration - thanks!

'Thanks for the nice comment. I don't have a website, but a track plan is available in pdf and I could provide it to you by e-mail with some comments if I got your e-mail address.

This is so cool, my grandpa ran the general store/PO in Quinnimont for the coal miners from 1943 to 1970......they lived at the rail yard. Great job

This video is awesome. I noticed something very unique, almost immediately. I'm not sure if you actually designed your layout ,in a manner that would take model train audio, and it's realism to new heights. I am amazed at how realistic these locomotives sound ,regarding the terrain, in which they are traveling. .i can hear every little echo. BTW it's visually stunning as well.

I'm in the middle of producing a cab-ride video of my N-scale layout and had the same problem although my scenery foliage turned purple. I mostly solved the problem by replacing light bulbs with the LED variety. They are kind of expensive (around $4.00 each) but flooded the layout with much stronger light and removed most of the purple. You can also use the bulbs in clip-on work type fixtures to flood dark spots on the layout. Nice looking scenery.

Great layout 0011jmha you captured the Alleghany perfect in N Scale. I model the pensy's but at this point in time I haven't a layout. I do have limited space in my old age working on a 12 foot town scene that will have a lot of switching and run thru's . At one time I had all 4 main line tracks in a garage layout that was my pride and joy in the late 80's early 90's. Keep up the great model railroading!! Warren

I love the H8. Fortunately I do not live to far from the Henry Ford museum where 1601 resides. I can remember my dad taking me there as a kid and this locomotive is by far my favorite display piece. I currently own a HO H8 but have yet to send it out for the DCC decoder and weathering. Recently I had the privlidge of riding in the cab of the 1225 2-8-4 Berkshire Pere Marquette; that was a dream come true with having assisted firing the engine. Your layout is a great success with beautiful detail of modeling the landscape. Thank you for all your uploads, they are always fascinating to watch.

+996TwinTurbo911 Thanks for the positive comment. Visited both the B&O and Henry Ford museum and seen the H8s there as well as the 1225 in Durand 1996. The real thing is impressive, especially when live, as the 1225. Further uploads will come.

Beautiful layout!!! You appear to have an L-2 Hudson on the point of your FFV. Did you kitbash that? really enjoyed your video. Thank you.
@0011jmha9 жыл бұрын
apwool Yes it's an L-2, glad you noticed, it's at the very end of the video. It is a kitbash from a Concor 4-6-4 mechanism and a Concor 2-8-4 shell and tender. Some plastic surgery to reverse the domes, addition of handrails etc.

Nice locomotives. Please, Whose epic layout is this shot on, and where is it located?
@0011jmha9 жыл бұрын
apwool Glad you appreciate the layout! The layout is located in Sweden, I started out building it in 2000. It depicts the C&O railway between Handley and Hinton in 1948-52. It is 200 sq ft (21 sq metres) in 2 decks connected with a 5 1/2 turn double track helix. Mainline is more than 200 feet double tracked, DCC controlled.

No, they were imported by now-defunct Key Imports in 1996, made in Korea by Samhongsa. Three versions were produced; Early as built (#1609), Intermediate/modified (#1644) and late (1645 class).

@0011jmha13 жыл бұрын
There are 4 Key Imports H-8s, 2 K-4s and one T-1 in working order with Lenz decoders. 4 Bachmann 2-6-6-2s and a lot of other plastic steam power. 225 hoppers and another 250 miscellaneous cars.The layout is DCC-controlled.

@Spyda0Jones The layout is N-scale, prototype is the C&O railroad, New River Subdivision 1948-53

0:15 that crunchy sound is coming out of the Bachamann mallet?
@0011jmha14 жыл бұрын
@GrandPimp20 The 4-6-2 is a ModelPower Pacific, with Microscale C&O decals and a Concor Berkshire tender. Flying pumps were also added. The boiler is a bit too skinny but I think it's an acceptable F-18. It's a bit noisy, though.

@0011jmha15 жыл бұрын
Right, it is code 80. However, the wheel flanges of the Key Imports locos are very low, I am quite sure it'll run fine on code 55. The H-8 is sensitive to track alignment, see the #1644 wiggling into Quinnimont in the 2nd video. Curve is almost too tight. Also, the short fixed wheelbase (only the 2nd driver group) makes pulling a long train up an ascending curve demand exact track alignment and not too tight a radius or steep incline.
@0011jmha15 жыл бұрын
There is plenty of room in the tender for both a sound decoder and a loudspeaker. I have 4 H-8's in working order, but I haven't run them as pushers (the were seldom doubleheaded). Also, pushers were mostly used east of Hinton, not much on the New River SD, where my layout is set.
@0011jmha15 жыл бұрын
The layout is DCC-controlled. The H-8's are Key Imports brass, which I have equipped with Lenz decoders travelling in the tenders.
