This really took me back. I was a youngster in Hinton back in 1949-50. Your C & O whistling reminded me of the haunting whistle sounds echoing up thru the New River Gorge. It was surreal. The only thing missing was the sounds of the river near Hinton as it was dotted with boulders. I would hang out at the station after dark watching for the bats flying just above the rails thru the fog that was slightly lit by the street type lamps lining the platform perhaps a hundred feet down the rails. When a coal drag came thru, it took as much as 1 hour or so to pass. It went slightly faster than walking speed. With a distinctive click-click, click, click of the wheels passing over the rail joints, the coal drag would labor past the station. There was a chill in the air. It was an experience I have never forgotten……

Thanks for your comment! It's always good to hear from somebody who has actually experienced the real thing in the steam era. I've visited the area several times and even white-water rafted down the New River, but in modern times..

Great layout 0011jmha you captured the Alleghany perfect in N Scale. I model the pensy's but at this point in time I haven't a layout. I do have limited space in my old age working on a 12 foot town scene that will have a lot of switching and run thru's . At one time I had all 4 main line tracks in a garage layout that was my pride and joy in the late 80's early 90's. Keep up the great model railroading!! Warren

This video is awesome. I noticed something very unique, almost immediately. I'm not sure if you actually designed your layout ,in a manner that would take model train audio, and it's realism to new heights. I am amazed at how realistic these locomotives sound ,regarding the terrain, in which they are traveling. .i can hear every little echo. BTW it's visually stunning as well.

Beautiful layout!!! You appear to have an L-2 Hudson on the point of your FFV. Did you kitbash that? really enjoyed your video. Thank you.

apwool Yes it's an L-2, glad you noticed, it's at the very end of the video. It is a kitbash from a Concor 4-6-4 mechanism and a Concor 2-8-4 shell and tender. Some plastic surgery to reverse the domes, addition of handrails etc.
