All I can say is: Been there, done that, seen it, heard it, lived it, cursed it, made me doubt career choices, made want to quit and sell everything on the spot and even made me doubt my life. But when the dust has settled, it still is something amazing you do every time and you wouldn't want to trade it for anything else! What made a big difference for me when I did a way lot more, was being booked with the artist/band thru a booking agency. That way I could get my requirements and conditions included in the contract the hiring party had to sign. The were also included on the rider that also had to be signed for as a part of the contract. If any of my requirements or conditions weren't met and the client wasn't willing to, I had the right to cancel the show on the grounds of "unworkable conditions" and/or "in the interest/for the reputation of the artist". The key word here being "workable", both for me and the artist. Although I have to say that I probably have ever had two or three gigs that were completely done to every inch and letter of conditions and requirements, I maybe had 4 or 5 gigs that we decided to not do because of unworkable conditions. The rest has always been in between and with some good will, creativity and a communicative (does that word even exist?) personality, there aren't many problems that can't be solved. So I suggest that you add a list of requirements and conditions to your contract and make sure that you get signed copies. Not only from the band (if they hire you direct) but also from the hiring party that hires the band. The easiest way for that is to have the band include your conditions and requirements as an addendum to their contract. That way everybody knows what they are required to do to make that production happen. And that's not that you guys want to be dicks but you need workable conditions to be able to perform. Most likely because it is more informal (so keep it informal) but i found that the hiring party but especially location people are more likely to follow a rider than a contract. So that would be my top choice. And yes, I did ALEAYS bring a signed copy of the contract and rider with me. Just in case somebody wanted to start shit. Also good to know that Bart has a (rightful) limit that can be crossed! Sometimes enough is enough and you got to take a stand for yourself! Like always: Keep on doing what you do best! And did you use a cardiod sub array when you had the three subs next to each other on the 4th gig? Wasn't clear from the video...

It depends on a few things: 1. Budget 2. Type of event 3. Location Some events, like weddings, generally don't need dual subs. Outdoor shows generally do if the space needs it. We try not to make budget drive our final decision, because if the gig needs it, the budget should support it so we are not beating up our gear just because we didn't want to bring more subs out.

Thank you for the effort to put this video together. That's a lot of footage to edit. It was really enjoyable to watch. I felt your pain dealing with the rain. I've been there many times myself and fortunately I've never had any major equipment damage from rain but I have lost a couple popup tents from wind. An 85 dB limit seems pretty unreasonable especially in a live room. You did the only thing you could do. If they want to keep it under 85 dB they shouldn't book the room for events with live music. A drum set (no mics) produces more than 85 dB. No matter the issues, Great Job!

85db is crazy. Venues need to put more production thinking in this. I mean entertainment is one of the purposes after the wedding. With that, the last wedding we did, DJ not production, didn’t like the insurance company we had. We went back and forth to the point that I told everyone, “if we change insurance, the price of the estimate is going to go up substantially.” They finally agreed our insurance was fine….i didn’t mean to be an ass, but it had to be said. With that, you all handled it better than I would have!!😂😂

Hi, i really enjoy watching your videos they are really informative. I've got one question.... For a setup like this how do you calculate how much power you'd need from a generator or rather how do you choose what size (power wise) of a generator you would use?
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 6 сағат бұрын
Straight from our requirements doc! (Please feel free to use any part of this that can help!...you're welcome!) • Electrical power: Clean and adequate electrical power is crucial. Power must be located within a reasonable distance from stage for safety and reliability reasons. Production Company is not responsible for inadequate power or additional fees that may be incurred to provide adequate power. Each of the three following configurations will accommodate a typical performance: - Scenario 1: Minimum 4 dedicated (not on same circuit or shared with other venue appliances) 3 prong 15 or 20 amp standard outlets (household outlets) and production equipment will be scaled to accommodate minimum requirements (small venue). 6-8 20-amp circuits are preferred and required for mid to larger venues that need full system sound. Location of electrical service panel and each circuit identified is advisable. - Scenario 2: Hardwire 6/4 cable provided by BC Productions into electrical service panel providing minimum 50 amp 220V single phase service within 75 ft of stage. Connecting feeder lines must be completed by qualified person or electrician provided by venue. - Scenario 3 (PREFERRED): Minimum 50 amp 220V single phase receptacle within 75 ft. of stage. This is a typical modern day dryer receptacle (NEMA 14-50R). Older variations to this style of plug may be accommodated, but must be known. Portable generators: The use of portable electric power must be discussed prior to event to ensure adequacy and need. Minimum 15kW PROFESSIONAL generator that is capable of providing clean and constant minimum 50 amp, 120V AC to all circuits is required. Production Company is not responsible for operation, tuning, or hooking-up feeder lines. Hook up must be completed by a qualified person (preferably a certified electrician) present on-site on the day of the event. Production Company is not responsible for the cost of rentals, fees, permits, inspections or fines related to portable power. Any portable or temporary power must be functioning during set up and tear down time windows. Deviations, concerns or questions on these base requirements must be discussed prior performance date. BC Productions reserves the right to refuse the use of inadequate or dangerous power situations (e.g. a typical light duty generator that is used to power tools is not adequate).

Hi Stacy & Bart. I just wanted to say that I have been watching your uploads for about a month now, and have thoroughly enjoyed them; trying to learn and absorb as much as possible. Please take this criticism constructively, I, in no way, intend to attack, belittle, or demean anyone. Also, I completely get that this is 3 years ago, I see you two are both still together, happy, and improving. However, having just watched this for the first time I must say a few things. Easy to Tuesday afternoon "Quarterback" (and I'm not even a football fan) but Bart's "teaching" in these scenes is horrendous, and counter productive (the New Kids On The Block these days might use the term: Cringe Worthy). For that I am sorry Stacy. And on behalf of Bart and all other things, I formally appologize to you. No one should have to deal with that sort of treatment. I will leave it there on that point; no need to go on because as I said, I am not intending to "fire shots" as it were. I do understand and appreciate that Bart was no doubt experiencing some level of stresses, pre-occupied, and busy - in work mode - focussed on gettting this event up and running. However that does not excuse his actions/treatment/responces. You did nothing to deserve that Stacy, you didn't ask things incorrectly, you meerely were eagerly trying to learn and improve. Not sure if Bart was just having a bad day. But this "teaching" day was planned and scheduled; making these interactions even less excused (for lack of a better term); as it might be the case that tensions might be higher if something unexpected came up, deadlines are tight, and now under additional stress a lesson needs to be taugh to a student not easilly grasping the concepts. I think more patience, understanding/conpassion is certainly areas for improvement. Try explaining why things are from simple concepts, step by step, so the student is following along and can grasp, instead of jumping to the end and saying this is how it is. I certainly have had my moments of "poor instruction" or "improper treatment" of employees/co-workers I'm certain. But as instructors we must strive to improve on ourselves, and be in the correct headspace and neutral attitude while instructing others; fairly, and impartially. This had multiple moments that were very challenging for me to watch, and I really felt for Stacy, even though I trust she is/was perfectly fine, I still feel that her learning was negatively impacted in the least. And although Bart certain is a Master at what he does, far exceeding my abillities and knowledge; I certainly would have liked the opportunity to go back in space and time, take over for Bart, and (attempt) to teach Stacy in a more possitive, and productive manor. I hope Stacy, that you were finally able to gain the knowledge and confidence not awarded to you as I see here. I appreciate the both of you for openly posting - your real life - really. It's not easy, nor is it naturally comfortable to open yourselves up to online criticism; and I truly RESPECT, and VALUE that. Perhaps Bart meerely had a bad day, other life things going on, stresses of running a business; even on a "Relaxing Church Sunday"; and hopefully he is a great teacher for Stacy. But if not, there is always room for improvement and growth, and I am glad that you two have pushed through and persivered - in your OWN WAY - as we all should! 💚 (sorry for such a long post) P.S. If ever you are looking for some different instruction/clarification, please reach out; there are endless resources in the world today, and I am more than willing to assist where I can; as I am sure are many others. Just my views, hope no harm is taken.

Thank you for taking the time to not only watch an older video, but to comment as well. If you read through the comments, there were many with your sentiments and we responded as such. The one thing we haven't mentioned, for better or worse, is potentially some of the cultural differences that could be playing into this. We are married, but working as a married couple can bring in different dynamics. My jobs have always carried amount of intensity that perhaps carries through, to some, inappropriately to the "wife" role. Many American's put forth an intensity, especially in the work force, that doesn't even come close to what it is in this video.....We are not trying to say it's better, but expectations are generally to deliver high performance and outcomes, and if you can't cut it...you will be called out on it to step it up. I have more recently seen this in my outsourcing relationships in my day job were we have to be extremely gentle, beyond what we even realize, to our offshore partners because they are way more sensitive than Americans are....we can be pretty to the point.

Hi Nathaniel - thanks for your comment. You are correct, Stacy is the balancer and more positive person of the both of us which is an important role...but her role is a bit more secondary in the sense that the success of the gig doesn't fall directly on her from a client perspective. We are both in this together, but the planning, preparation, expectations are on Bart....so with that, comes more stress. That's not an excuse to be in a bad mood though...but sometimes that's how humans react to stress.

We always EQ to the room and this is just another factor to manage from our perspective, but it doesn't impact our approach!

Dave Rat and others believe that putting subs in the center is better for phasing and overall coverage issues. I have noticed the only time you do that is for larger shows where you are actrually adding center subs but still keeping the left-right subs in place. Granted some setups don't allow for center subs but in this case it could have. What is your philosophy on sub placement? Have you ever compared split vs. center?
@StlPike2004
@StlPike2004 2 күн бұрын
Using two subs per side, it probably sounded just fine (meaning, it probably sounded great) for the set up and type of band. It looks clean, and based on the damp/uneven ground, all 4 subs in the center wouldn't look that great anyway. Curious to see what his response is.
@thesoundcouple
@thesoundcouple 2 күн бұрын
As I eluded to in then video, we take many factors into consideration on our set ups than just optimizing system performance. Dave Rat has the luxury of more space, security, barricades, systems engineers, stage hands and other resources to support events that people that pay money to see...He is more responsible to optimize the audio so the ticket paying customers are happy. On the other hand, we are generally down the list of priorities and importance in events (at least until it's our turn) and we have bigger concerns than system performance...We have to deal with pleasing event planners and client, not blocking or tipping over flowers and other decorations, preventing our subs/and gear from being tripping hazards or drink stands/or chairs for over served or uneducated guests, and putting up a clean system using minimal space. We generally achieve good results in any configuration we go with...but for all of the said reasons above, we will always error on the side of aesthetics and safety over system performance. I typically do not have problems overcoming any system shortcomings on ours or any other system. Arguably, center fills will generally deliver better low end and eliminate power alleys/valleys, but it's simply not a primary issue for the type of gigs we do if and when it happens. If the event can support it and we have a bigger outdoor show, we will augment with a center fill of subs. You will notice that in any video that we supply them, they are always out of the way of the public (e.g. under the stage). Thanks for the question!

A lot of what you hit on in the opening rant is why I'm no longer running my small sound company. Especially since covid hit, it really seems like detailed communication with venues and artists has become terrible. And beyond that, the general public who are at these shows have become even more feral. I can't tell you how many shows I've done where the weeks leading up it seems all good and dandy, only to show up to completely different circumstances, and realizing I was not charging enough for the hassle.

Yes...there is a lot to unpack here on the direction everything is going. What we experienced is just a small example of bigger issues that COVID escalated the societal standards and expectations to reach new low levels....we see it everywhere. Is it also part of getting older and so all of the cliche old guy shots start coming out? The people that we are passing the torch say to us "Relax Boomer"....well, I know I will be ok....in the end, I am not so sure you will be. Generations were raised to strive to leave this world better than we came in...don't see this as a high priority society standard any longer. OMG Bart I couldn't agree more with everything you explained in the opening of this video " so and so played here, should be fine" answers zero of our needs! so frustrating! keep it up you two, Love it.

I thought about you and some of things you must go through when we are challenged to confirm a few circuits at times. We typically find that the further the gigs are from the tall buildings, the easier it is to work with people and they are certainly much more appreciative and supportive of what we do.

Yes...I am guessing he just wanted some independent control of his bass volume.

You're always playing with things and making changes, is that normal?

Mixing a band is dynamic. Yes, I am making frequent changes because every song, parts of songs, etc. can need adjustments to ensure that everything is heard and balanced.

Hey Guys, Show power usually falls to the audio crew(joy). On most generators there is a switch inside one of the motor doors, 110-single phase, 240/208 and 480. Atlanta we have a lot of film use so make sure gen is NOT set for 480 (air conditioning on film set). If so, you let the magic smoke out of your rig.Lay feeder to where distro needs to live, verify generator settings.Fire the gen, meter output at the end of feeder not connected to distro yet. Looking for 115-119, all three legs. Tie in, go hot. If unsure have a band member lick the black or blue lead.

Thanks for sharing...we were thinking on suggesting that! For better or worse, the band was pretty much oblivious to the issues at hand....I guess that's part of our job.

Not completely sure....but he was running his bass through it. Guessing so he could maintain independent control of his volume.

The Headrush is the output of the Bass pedal/emmulator. The guitar player also has one. They are what they call an FRFR (full range flat response)cabinet. They are used to get the flattest response out of an emmulator pedal. I actually have 6 of these I use as stage monitors. Best bang for the buck.

Did they put in a GROUND ROD for you ??????? Even on your Pecron always run a Real Earth Ground . It will Save Your Life ... The last time I had to wait for the Generator Company to come out and FIX the Generator(The Promoter would not let me do it)(I own 9 MultiQuip Generators) He got there 10 mins before we started and the promoter was going NUTS . All it was , was the MAIN Switch to go to 240 single phase.. I also put a ground rod in the ground and grounded it . He asked me WHY I did that since it was sitting on the Ground . YA , On 5 Rubber Tires . LOL...LOL...LOL... It was a 40kw MultiQuip and I own 3 of them as I said . I was looking into your Pecron and they no longer make a 3000 , it is now a 3600 . Did you buy anything else with it ? They are on SALE right now for $ 1999.00

@thesoundcouple 4 күн бұрын
I believe they had a ground rod. The Pecron does not support that...we have seen some generators (portable) with the same. Not surehow they get around this.

One thing about trussing is that you could potentially leave your fixtures connected, and then just load the truss into the trailer, have a wall bracket for it for transport; and then you can just deploy.
