Hey, something I wanted to ask. Did you feel often that you "hit the ceiling" of micro modular (which is 1/4 power of standard nord modular g1 or 1/8 of expanded version of nmg1)? And what was most complex/crazy thing you managed to achieve with your mm?
@father_mooАй бұрын
i've run out of processing power, and wished I'd been able to add another voice or whatever, but i didnt' really see that as a problem. usually it prevents you from becoming overly complex or just confusing. the craziest patch, and my favorite, is still probably my Living Grass patch where i created synthetic bug and bird and frog sounds. it should be somewhere in my archives...

Wtf is that!? Bottle drone synth!???? Did you make that!!???
@father_mooАй бұрын
a friend made it for me. it's quite a popular DIY synth kit that can be found in many electronic music magazines. it's simply a battery powered oscillator where an LED picks up light and uses it to determine the pitch. This one is set quite low so that if there's very little light, the osc goes subsonic (sounds like clicks...)
@nathanielball365Ай бұрын
Beautifully orchestrated!! I was going to buy a JT-4000 BUT went with the Pro vs. mini which is amazing. But I'm still thinking about getting one of those. Would you say you're happy with its performance? I already know it's well worth it's $49.99 price tag! Im just wondering is it a device i could accompany with all my other devices and their projects?
@father_mooАй бұрын
I'm happy ... given what it cost. The arpeggiator is quite limited, this is probably the only arp melody i'll make on it... but if you use it as a midi controlled module, or a single-finger synth pad machine, you can get cool sounds out of it.

After watching a documentary on the sound design of Ridley Scott’s “Alien”, I decided I wanted to build a small eurorack system I could put together for under $1000 and use it to design atmospheric soundscapes for a short film. I also wanted to power everything with a portable power source, and be able to fit the whole setup inside of my backpack. I bought a used Pulp Logic LBZ42 case for $200 on reverb and a Harley Benton Power-bank ($75) then I spent the next few months planning out my rack on modular grid. The first module I wound up deciding on was the Manecolabs Grone Drone. I had to wait about 6 1/2 months before finding a good deal on a used one ($225). The Grone Drone is the heart of this system. One of the things you complained about in this video is how even with very careful planning it’s likely that with such few modules only one sound will be produced. The Grone Drone is the antithesis of this. It’s like having six modules in one. It has percussion and even has a Clouds clone built in. Every time I use the Grone Drone I wind up with new, fascinating sounds I'd never heard it make before. Next I purchased a Recovery Effects Sound Destruction Device ($100 used). I purchased this module simply as an add on fx unit for the Grone Drone. The Grone Drone can make so many different sounds but once you switch clouds on it becomes very ethereal and while I like that vibe I wanted to make it a bit grittier. Finally, I bought a beepboop electronics eurorack mounted speaker for $80. This speaker is completely adequate when I'm out and about making soundscapes but what I really like about it is that I can hook it up to my much higher quality external speakers whenever I'm not traveling since it has a a 6.4 X 2.1mm DC jack port. All in all I spent about $700 when factoring in shipping and necessary accessories like patch cables and knurlies, ribbon cables, (and stickers of course!). I couldn’t be happier as this little eurorack setup of mine does exactly what I want it to do. It took me about a year to plan the build, save up the money, and wait for deals. And I’ll forever be grateful for channels like yours for inspiring builds like mine! Here's a link to the completed setup on ModularGrid: modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/2357870 (all 1u modules came included with my purchase of the Pulp Logic LBZ42 case!) Cheers!

I use the Mininova audio in and into the various "vocoda" options or just press the various preset sounds and hear what comes out. I'm not familiar with the Kaoss pad, so mo idea what it does but might look for a cheap used one. Also tempted by the Korg NTS-3 which is out soon, it seems to be based on the Kaoss, I have the NTS-1, I like it. Small low tech stuff can be such fun.
@father_moo2 ай бұрын
Yup, korg is also releasing a kaoss pad kit and it's cheap. A kaoss pad is just like the audio processor on your mininova, except you probably use knobs to adjust the sound, while the kaoss pad uses an X/Y touchpad to adjust it.

@@father_moo I'm thinking of either the Fluorine or the Ono Sendi ( or eventually both). I know the Arcane has sync in, I run mine off the Glitch MK2. Ideally they would all have sync or trigger in. I sometimes plug them into the audio in of my Novation Miniinova for added sound variations
@father_moo2 ай бұрын
@@brianwilliams3621 the mininova filter will be a good addition. I have OnoSendai too. The difference is: Fluorine, like Glitch Storm, is generative; it is constantly making "music.' There is an interesting book called "The geometry of musical rhythm", have you read that? Could be a good source for additional inspiration. I've learnt about existance of it when I searched if there was some theory on how *compose* drums and 90% of search results were stupidly "lets learn how to play real drums". So I think that book might be the only thing for that.
@father_moo2 ай бұрын
i haven't read that. but some smart math guy wrote a paper that said all the drum patterns humans ever came up with can be derived from one algorithm. There are a lot of modules now that use that algorithm. They are called Euclidean patterns. I have Mutable Grids which has a Euclidean mode. Some others like Pam's Workout and Ornament and Crime maybe also can do this. Since I have Grids i haven't researched others ...

Never got logic. So thanks fr the tip. Wondering what determines what comes out of the logic? Is it random?
@father_moo2 ай бұрын
No, it’s not random. It’s actually the basic building blocks of computing. Imagine you are sending two gates at different rates to two logic inputs. Even though they are at different rates, there are times when they will both be on simultaneously. If you set the logic to output mode AND, it will send a positive signal when input one “and” input two are both on. Otherwise it’ll be negative. If you set it to OR, it will send a pos signal when one or the other signal is positive, but not both. And there are various other modes it can have but you’ll have to read more to find out …

10:55 the "Mst" input on the RndStepGen1 is wanting a "Slv" connection from something else - an oscillator/lfo or whatever has a "Slv" output -> the ClkGen1 in your upper-right can connect to that RndStepGen1 and you can put it not only at the hard pulses of the standard 24/beat 4/beat outputs of ClkGen1, but also any ratio or fraction selectable in that `1:1` param of RndStepGen1. It is the same patch load as ClkRndGen's (0.60%) so use-case is your call. the difference is you could use an intermediary modulator to change that ratio/Mst/Slv input amount and drift off the grid and back if you wanted.
@midinerd3 ай бұрын
Ah - but the 'steps' that occur will be the ratio-rate specified but not actually be phase locked. So it won't sound nice and snapped perfect like the clocked feller.
@father_moo3 ай бұрын
@@midinerd it's still an approach I hadn't tried. I would have thought to connect a master osc to the slave input but nothing else... didn't know it accepted anything else
@midinerd3 ай бұрын
@@father_moo I also wasn't aware of this. but just now as I write this, the fact that "clock generator" is under LFO (an oscillator) makes so much more sense that is has this oscillator-concept connectivity to it. just very range-limited in frequency with the bpm specifier.
