One of my favorite through lines of the first couple seasons that starts here is Chang and Duncan's genuine dislike of one another. It's a fun little subplot.

Mostly Buffy is a teen drama, with the real trials of growing up represented as monsters. Some episodes it's more blatant than others. Teen dramas often have some comedy, perhaps Buffy has more then most, but it has darker elements as well. Xander himself has been a victim of bullying, I don't think he'd find the bullying funny. Bullied kids often become bullies, but not because they find it funny. 6:41 <<He's not terrinble.>> Yes, he is terrible. Even when he is not posessed by a Hyena spirit he is a teenage boy, showing the worst traits of the type. Willow and Xander have been friends for almost their entire lives, even when it was clear she was smart and he was not, except in insulting people and being subtle enough to get away with it most of the time, they stayed friends. 20:08 Willow's not as naive as she sometimes appears. They deliberately made it look as if she was going to let him out, but even though she is infatuated with him, she is smarter than that,

1:24 'Anointed One' not 'Appointed One', but an easy mistake to make, especially as we don't see any actual anointing. He was one of the passengers on the bus.

In the 80s and 90s, in Canada, a body in a locker might have given us a half day, but not likley. We were very rural though.

I think what Willow sees in Zander a boy who she is comfortable enough with to be friends, which for Willow is 90% of the crush need.

I first watched this show in the mid-naughts and this episode stuck with me. The decade before watch 2, it returned to me more often than most, even more plot twisting. It sings to real life so much. Annointed.

“As if!” Love the era appropriate commentary 😂 Xander sucks approximately 90% of the time. I actually prefer that this predator version of him is straight up about it.

"It's a very funny show..." then bullying, animal cruelty, murder, cannibalism and attempted sexual assault. It's a hilarious show...when it's not horrific and tragic.

The show gets a bit dark here with the principal getting eaten, proving Buffy is not just a kid's show.

This episode was a great overall metaphor of high school bullying. RIP Flutie!!! Eion Bailey as Kyle DuFours (one of the pack) in his first professional acting role ever. He eventually becomes known for playing August Booth on _Once Upon a Time._ The look Willow gives Xander after he gets her out in dodgeball is odd to me, as in that situation it's justifiable to try and get people out for the purposes of the game. I don't consider the Scoobies pulling a "Scully" and ignore that moment wrong, if they had done that. It isn't until Willow asks Xander what's wrong with him that you could even start arguing anything truly wrong with Xander, and not until the pig is eaten that any proof is shown outside of Giles' explanation of "teenage boy," even if you know something is off. Early on, the writers said they realized putting Willow in danger meant the stakes were higher because they knew the audience liked her. It also fit well because of how naïve her character is.

I think Willow gave Xander a look because it is likely they have played dodgeball before and as her friend he's never targeted her, so this was another behavior change. That's speculation on my part but I think it makes sense. Also, he threw the ball pretty hard.

@@ernesthakey3396 _INSIDE OUT 2_ SPOILER A good head canon. But that's also the point. It doesn't really prove he's going through anything other than being "a sixteen year old boy." Giles was right about that. Even Buffy thinking Xander's change in friends is slayer related isn't really anything different than what Riley was doing in _Inside Out 2_ on it's surface. Eating the pig was the first real clue anything slayer related was going on with Xander. People talk about this episode (including me) like its metaphor is about bullying, but I also think puberty is a metaphor it tackles as a secondary metaphor.

The hyena is using Xander's memories to attack Buffy, so it comes off as sexual assualt. If the hyena attacked without possessing anyone it would be a standard hyena attack, while Xander wouldn't sexually assualt Buffy (but he does have a high school crush on her); combining Xander's crush with the hyena attacking creates an issue that wouldn't have happened otherwise. It's a horrible moment (not because of Xander or the hyena) because of Xander _and_ the hyena combined; with the hyena having Xander's memories. Hope that made sense.

With Britta, people don't just accidentally go no contact with their parents. And just some rl advice, if your friend doesn't wanna talk about it, that's kinda a sign it must be really bad if they can't communicate what it was

No the Britta's parents episode always makes me so mad because her feelings are dismissed and she's completely right. On the one hand Britta is overly guarded like Jeff, but on the other hand she has every right to be that way. I think they were trying to show with this episode that she is a lot like Jeff but it was a slight misfire. I don't entirely mind Britta's parents though, I tend to like them more on each rewatch.

I split the difference in my opinion of the friends relationship with Britta's parents. The friends shouldn't be THAT deep in a secret relationship, and in the meantime they should be actively trying to get to the bottom of Britta's reasons for the estrangement. They do dismiss what she says about her parents, but I would guess that its because she isn't being clear and it sounds like hyperbole and metaphor.

When Troy left, as did some whimsy. When Shirley left, as did some wholesomeness. When Pierce left, as did the extremism. All of these things lead to the show feeling much more grounded. It's still a funny show, it's just... not as playful.

The way Britta's parents are so dismissive and gaslighting about her experience and feelings sucks. The fact that they refuse to respect even the boundary of "no contact" Britta is trying to maintain shows me that they aren't changed enough to give her what she needs in that relationship. Maybe they never will be. I've met too many parents that would rather wonder, "what went wrong?" than ever listen to their children's list of griefs without denial. Ah, well. There are so many lines and moments from this episode I quote, constantly. Jesus WEPT!!

I think Annie's reaction can be logically explained as a combination of "straw that broke the camel's back" and the fact that she's not the teenager she was when the show started, so it's likely her worldview has changed.

About Britta's feelings: they are a literal joke in almost all episodes, as is she. Britta... dedoi. Bu yeah, after this confrontation, she may or may not mature.
