Season 5 is wild. It may not be brilliant all the way through like Season 2, but it has several of my favorite episodes. Also, it made me fall in love with the show again after that wet fart of a season.

Chase was still under contract for Season 5, NBC didn't want to sue him to come back so they agreed he could get out of his contract for a single scene, and they paid him for 13 episodes.

Hickey is a gem of a character. I love all the season 5 and 6 characters like him, Frankie, and Elroy.

Jeff is a good lawyer, but it's because he has a natural talent for reading people, and a cultivated skill in manipulating them, neither of which directly translates to being good at teaching, interestingly. Many talented professionals are actually terrible at teaching, because education requires you to not only know how to do the thing, but also how to break that information down to base level, and clearly communicate each concept, relate individual concepts to each other, and demonstrate how those concepts synthesize to create more complex concepts/techniques/outcomes. Also, once you're really good at something, it's easy to forget the beginner steps necessary to get there, which makes it challenging to teach those steps effectively. That's not even delving into the science of learning, which has its own evolving standards and fundamentals, because human brains are complex and we're only just beginning to scratch the surface! I mean, think of all the flawed teaching methods of the past. It's never too late to course-correct, but modern teaching has a long way to go towards building more universally effective and healthy methods! (I teach at a community college 😅)

My understanding is that Chevy Chase really hated the writing on Community as well as the long hours of work the show required. The problems sort of kept building up between Chevy and the rest of the cast until he became impossible to work with and he had to leave the show.

I've also heard that he just didn't get along with the rest of the cast either. He'd say something racist or dumb and be used to people letting it go, but the cast wouldn't and they'd call him on it. Screw him, I don't miss his presence.

It was more like; he didn't really understand why the writing was funny so it made him uncomfortable. He was more into the slapstick stuff that made his career, which is ironic because he was great in this role. And yeah, he definitely couldn't keep up with the pace and long hours behind the scenes and was a jerk to everyone.

Buzz Hickey is a great addition. :) I love how Repilot echoes back to some of the moments in the pilot. Near the end of season 4, we fans really thought the show might be cancelled. Then a miracle occurred because we got season 5 AND Dan Harmon returned. The dream for #sixseasonsandamovie was still alive!

Chevy Chase always maintained a reputation for not getting along well with other cast and crew members. I read a book about Saturday Night Live's history called Live from New York. Even back in the 70s, when Chevy worked on that show, he was known as a racist homophobic bigot...just like his Pierce Hawthorne character on Community! (Life imitating art? Definitely!) So, when I found out that Chevy left Community after four seasons because of the long hours and fueds with cast and crew members, it didn't surprise me at all.

The way I see it is that Season 4 is an OK season of some other TV show, but completely misses the mark on the characters lining up with previous seasons. That's why I think 'gas leak' is a good analogy - everyone is acting weird and totally out of place with the first three and last two seasons.

excel is its own little world. i can do some super basic stuff, but i know people who can do amazing things in excel. it's not as powerful as spss for statistics, but it can do all sorts of graphs and a lot of different types of data analysis.

Nic Cage is a complex and subtle beast. He's a Copolla, and used Cage cause he didn't wanna trade on the Copolla name. For every really good movie I can think of with him, I can think of an equivalent bad one. And he's still interesting to watch regardless.

The next three episodes are AMAZING. Nicolas Cage movies to react to: Raising Arizona, Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, Con Air, The Rock, Face Off, Matchstick Men, Moonstruck, It Could Happen to You, Kick Ass, An Evening with Kevin Smith, The Death of Superman Lives, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies... Don't do them too close together though: space them out. Don't pull an Abed.

I wasn't a fan of the premise of the repilot, Jeff becoming a teacher was reasonable but the rest felt way too contrived so personally seasons 5 & 6 didn't have solid foundations and didn't improve on season 4 imo. There are some really good episodes (meow meow beans is classic silly fun) and some great dialogue, but overall they were lacking something. And you're right about the visual dreariness.

Hickey is a garbage character. They did a lame comic book trope, & made Leonard, the established badass at Greendale, a weakling just to boost Hickey. It's trash writing used to make a new character look cool. Never liked in comics & hated it here too ✌️😎
