Are there any advantages to using a 5 valve tuba rather than a compensating tuba? A compensating tuba seems to make so much more sense, especially for someone like me who is very familiar with a compensating Euph. I'm about to get an Eb tuba but can't decide between a compensating or 5 valve when the compensating is about the same price.

Compensating tubas have advantages but also some disadvantages. Many compensating tubas are top action which does not facilitate pulling slides. With that, it is much harder to play in tune without sacrificing your tone. There are compensating tubas like the Besson 983 that does not fall into that category and allows for slide pulling. The other issue that can come up is compensating instruments can be more stuffy or resistant when using the compensating side. Generally speaking, you have fewer twists and turns in a five valve instrument compared to a compensating instrument. On a compensating euph, the low range concerns are less important because you do not play in that range as often. Either tuba design has compromises but I think at the end of the day, there is a reason why more professionals play 5 valve tubas as opposed to compensating tubas.

Moral of the story: become a great player and you'll sound great on any horn! And yes, when I first tried the Shires Sauer model I was shocked that it was a 525/547 slide! Still very open all over, with maybe a little more brightness than a TW47 slide. Would love to get your impressions of the Bachs. Great job!

is it posible to convert a tenor trombone into a bass? because i dont have the money for a bass
@LowBrassU
@LowBrassU 12 күн бұрын
You can add a second valve (which probably wont be cheap because it would be custom) but essentially every part of the bass trombone is bigger. You can also get a longer F attachment made but at the end of the day you can't really convert a tenor.

@CheukTheGreatestOfEverything

Coming from a violin/euphonium player, playing high notes is squeezing your lips very tightly. When you go very high, there is almost no gap between your lips which makes the note very hard to produce.

I played trombone from fourth grade all the way up through my sophomore year in college. I’ve since gotten rid of my trombone, I’m 56 years old, and I’m looking to invest in a decent trombone, used, and trying to determine whether or not I want to buy one with an attachment.this has been very helpful

Long, long ago, on my two Bach horns (tenor and bass) I used Slide-o.-mix. Worked well. Then I sold my Bachs and got a new Yamaha Xeno 822G dependant bass. The Yamaha slide lubricant worked best with the new Yamaha. Nw, three weeks ago I traded in the Yamaha for a new Shires Q36GR - some might consider this an entry level pro or college student horn, but when trying out horns, this was miles better than the Shires Customs I tried. I tried using the Yamaha lubricant on the Shire, but it really didn’t like it. Even after cleaning the slide several times to remove anything that had been on it before. So I cleaned it off once again, using the blue Slido-o-mix cleaning rod/clothe and then applied the Slide-o-mix Rapid (all in one black bottle). WOW, a completely different slide. Just as good as my old Yamaha Xeno slide. So now I’ve got at least 6 bottle of the Yamaha stuff and only two of the Slide-o-mix.

Usually it is a longer whole step (5-2-3 or 5-4 are in tune vs 1-2-3 and 1-4 being super sharp). In this case it is a major 3rd, like the Gb valve on a bass trombone, giving C instead of the typical Db with all 5 down.
