Do You know of any Glow "worm" insects that can appear in the american content other than railroad worms?
@PeppersnGlowworms28 күн бұрын
Well, there are other lampyrids (both larvae and larviform adults may be considered "worms'). There are also some closely related beetle groups, but I don't think they occur in the Americas. Some elaterids, however, do. There is e.g. Phyrophorus and Deilater even occurs in North America. Their wormy larvae can glow. Among the dipterans glowing Mycetophilidae (their larvae are the famous "glowworms" in caves of New Zealand) also come to mind. There is Orfelia fultoni in the USA e.g. ... If we are also talking South America and non-insect invertebrates, there is a bioluminescent earthworm (Microscolex phosphoreus) that was introduced to other regions (maybe including North and Meso America?)... There are also glowing centipedes in Germany. I dunno, if they are also found in the new world.

Its interesting how many lion named plants there are, i found some lions ear (leonotis nepetifolia) growing wild in an abandoned construction place and i really digged how they looked, very alien for a plant, i kept a seed pod and im thinking of germinating it, apparently they have a ton of uses, with one of the main ones being a cheap alternative to another weird looking plant 😆

Unusual beans to eat for small garden, i reccomend Caragana Arborescens. Syberian pea shrub and its a cold hardy tree with beautiful flowers( and even the wood, its precious like the finest, CITES banned rosewoods(fabaceae trait) , thogh small. For beans you want yo add the best thyme wich is called Summer Savory and its not the ordinary thyme from western europe. And another aromatic plant is the lovage or how you call it in Germany, the Maggi plant( the plant from the Maggi soup base).

@PeppersnGlowworms2 ай бұрын
@leon-is9ch2 ай бұрын

You could have helped the lizard by taking it into your warm hands to increase the lizard's temperature. I have done this successfully several times during December with Common Wall Lizards. After a few minutes life came back to the animals and they were able to run quickly to a nearby shelter. 🙂
@PeppersnGlowworms3 ай бұрын
How's to say I did not? But Nature conservation laws can be a bit crazy and counterproductive sometimes. Therefore, there wouldn't be any recordings of me picking up a wild protected lizard. Could be regarded as "catching" it...
@danielkronauer34523 ай бұрын
@@PeppersnGlowworms Oh, understandable. Unfortunately laws can be strange. Also in Switzerland you are not allowed to catch wild animals. But I think it is ok to put them away from the street. This even is the advice of the ornithological institute of Switzerland about fledglings: put them to a save place nearby. PS: you lizzard is a female Sand lizzard. (Lacerta agilis)

Normally, in summer, they dart away long before I manage to record them properly. Nothing left but a rustle in the leaf litter then! Now I found one early in 2024 in the same area I encountered some yellow sac spiders (or rather their web structures mostly) and wasp spiders in years prior. The site is just a little distance south of Berlin (Germany). It barely seemed alive in the cool moist morning of March 2nd... But a few hours later, the occasional ray of sun at noon had managed to get it closer to working temperature. I'm not 100 % sure, but I think it is a specimen of Lacerta agilis, ... but not so agile in the cold morning...

What's your usual mortality rate? I just started out with my first clutches from wild adults this summer. And suddenly had one of them crash from 56 to 12. Wondering about the most likely causes. I'm not confident whether I'm feeding them the right amounts so maybe just underfeeding? 🤔 Do you have any knowledge of disease they can potentially get?
@PeppersnGlowworms3 ай бұрын
Most of the time, I kept the Sardinian glowworms, I did no or very little counting. And I do not have my old notebooks with me. But I would consider a slow loss up to 50 % not worrysome. I also had way worse and way better results. There were also two catastrophic crashes with near extinction of my breeding strain, that I have now since 2004... I suspect overcrowing and bad food (like wild snails that contain pesticides) to be the main culprits for such losses. Poor hygiene and high temperatures in summer may also be reasons. You seem to keep them in relatively small groups (i.e. clutchwise?), so I guess overcrowding is not the issue (also depending on the size of the rearing container, though). If you think underfeeding is the problem, you can just powerfeed them. Give them fresh food every day or so and remove old food also, untill they lose interest in food. Feeding them for a few days like this once a week should be more then enough. Back in the day, I simply kept small live prey permanently with the larvae, but now I think that may have cost me some specimens from being eaten by the prey when in molt... Are you keeping Lampyris, too? Or is it Nyctophila? Those two genera should do well with my methods. You have seen my main videos on rearing glowworms, right? I hope your glowworms will do well...

Has the population number per generation remain the same since you originally got them? I think it would make sense if it lowered a little bit year after year, but i dunno
@PeppersnGlowworms4 ай бұрын
I had not really counted them for many years, but I think the numbers stayed more or less sameish. Just in recent years, there were two near population crashes. And when I tried to raise the number again, I was irritated than after successfully getting lots of adults, I got not that many eggs from them. That is why I am now counting and separating egg clutches...
