Great interview, Karl. I'm a self taught lover of music and happened to somehow get accepted into Mun Music way back when Mark was there. It was lovely to hear about his great career! You never even got into his business prowess!

I discovered this poem some years ago on a return visit to Newfoundland, the birthplace of my mother, who was the daughter of a seamstress and a fisherman. During the 1930’s, my grandfather would be gone for long stretches. I’ve listened to this reading several times, and I plan to read the poem at a Book Lover’s meeting today. Karl Wells’ sharing of it here captures the essence of the poem for me.

Great interview…….I’m also a subscriber to Bond Papers and despite the occasional curmudgeon attitude, there’s a lot of valuable information contained therein! I also despise the term “Newfie” and NL’s turning on the fake “Newfie brogue” in mixed company to ingratiate themselves!

Lisa Porter, gave the viewer an insight to “ back in the day” of just how filming, short and long , got started in NL. The determination of a group of dedicated people. Also of how CNA got started with their program of instruction. Lisa Porter has been another gem of Carl’s guests who has shared” so much with us of her love and tenacity of the industry in such a humble way ! I luuvved this segment ! Carl , keep coming with those interesting guests. Pat Hutton

You have beautiful natural talent. From listening to you I would have thought Tessa had voice and acting lessons. Tessa was quite blessed to come from quite a musical family (the well known Hutton’s)

re: flummies are also made with baking powder whereas toutons are made with yeast. Flummies are about the same as bannock. Also Mrs MacDonald was my neighbour since i was 5 in NWR when my family moved by her house from down near town hall across from my grandparents.

On November 22nd. in 1963, I was 9 years old & was home sick for the day. I was watching TV when a news flash with Walter Cronkite on CBC came on. He was emotional & I can hear his words in my mind to this day. I immediately alerted my mother, who was in the kitchen washing dishes & her reaction was like a close family member had died. This date is also my birthday as well as my wife's birthday. We were both married on Nov. 22nd as well. Weird coincidence but there it is.

So glad I found this. Enjoyed it so much that I'm going to put aside the latest Ken Follett, which I'm halfway through, and read "Mischief". An interesting interview that helps open your eyes to the richness and intrique in our history.- Ed

I was a substitute teacher in the Roman Catholic school board of Greater St John's in 1971 to 1973 and was in a lot of different schools. I saw a few nuns--a couple of principals. However, I don't remember any huge conversations about how you had to Roman Catholic to go to heaven or about going to hell. The stuff about the strap is incredible. I never saw anything like that. Is Critch making this stuff up? Ihave to read this book.
