I used to recommend that exact thing as an option, but several people messaged me and told me that the needle left a permanent hole in their injection ports after sterilization so I stopped recommending it. It worked for some people including me.

I'm wondering, of the pasteurized hwfp recipes you've demonstrated in various videos - which has given the highest yields? 1) just hwfp, 2) hwfp + aspen shavings + gypsum, 3) hwfp + bran + gypsum? I don't have a flow hood so the soy/cotton/buckwheat hulls probably aren't an option for me yet.
@RenegadeMushrooms5 күн бұрын
The bran + HWFP in general has been best. I've gone up to 20% bran as I show in my "Poor Boy Super Pasteurization Tek" video. Also the buckwheat hull + HWFP blend is very good for oysters. In general though I recommend new growers start with just HWFP and only start working in bran once you have success with that. Once you start adding bran start at 5% and work your way up if you want. Gypsum is totally optional.

Favourite is kings for texture and shiitakes for being so neat and tidy to grow. Have you heard btw adding motor oil - Paul stamets. I'm trying sesame oil, olive oil and coconut oil and roasted BRF, instead of boiled rice for shiitakes test Anothe test is SINGLE pressure cooked grain put direct to bucket then added shiitake spawn. Followed your boiled h2o in bag sawdust tek With kings, I put the shop-bought KingOy butts on boiled, cooled hydrogen peroxide cardboard in plastic container. After a week in dark, humid cupboard its spreading, no contams, Did the same to oyster in bucket of straw. This surprising because forums all say cardboard doesnt have enough nutrients for Kings🤷thanks for tip, fibre plus

Per usual, outstanding content! I’ve tried morels around our yard in a few locations a few yrs ago…supplemented with wood ash, gypsum, etc. But NOwhere near the process you’ve got going so it’s great to see this level of detail. Interestingly, no growth in the four areas I inoculated - however, when I was done inoculating I stood the shovel I used that day up against our three season room with the spade blade resting on limestone paver patio. That was done in early March 3 yrs ago (Southeastern WI, similar climate as yours), in late May/early June of same year morels came up actually between the pavers in the bonding sand material lol…definitely a ‘wtf?’ moment lol. Whacky, unpredictable stuff:-)

Hi Nick, Thank you for your amazing and very useful videos on mycology. I've learned a ton from your KZbin channel, including pasteurizing sawdust and soya hulls, clever dowels with grain and sawdust, Cordycep egg nutrient broth with a rice cooker, and many more techniques. On December 29th, I had a hectic explosion at home while doing agar work in my SAB. I used 70% isopropyl alcohol to handle the petri dish and scalpel, but I forgot about its flammability. When I lit a lighter to flame sterilize the scalpel, the bottom of the SAB exploded. My hands, covered in isopropyl alcohol, caught fire, and the plastic glove box trapped my hands inside. Eventually, I managed to pull my hands out, but both hands suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns. I had surgery to debride and remove all the dead skin, and I may need a second operation for skin grafts. Given the circumstances, my wife has instructed me to stop using the SAB, so I need to build a laminar flow hood (LFH). Can I use an H13 filter, or must it be H14? Best regards, Geoff from South Africa

Does it not make sense to "supplement the grain" before it becomes grain spawn? Will that boost yield?
@RenegadeMushrooms23 күн бұрын
You're basically just adding a bit more nutrient rich matter to your substrate so yes it will boost your yields a bit. Adding bran also absorbs the excess moisture from the exterior surface of the grain allowing you to skip the air drying step before packing it into jars.
@Rippedmagician22 күн бұрын
@RenegadeMushrooms I guess I'm bringing this up because most grain spawn is sterilized to the max, so supplementing the grain makes more sense to me. The mycelium gets to eat it before contamination has a chance.
@Rippedmagician23 күн бұрын
Let's say I wanted to supplement more, sterilizing via pressure cooking would suffice?
@RenegadeMushrooms23 күн бұрын
I've successfully supplemented up to 20% bran and still gotten away with an extended pasteurization. I show that in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKexpaRmpbusrs0si=LIAxQRvjOzewWkwd You could sterilize as well, but I prefer pasteurization if you can get away with it. Just personal preference.
