CORDYCEPS DUAL EXTRACT TINCTURE, Full Process with Helpful Links

Step by step tutorial on how to make a dual extract tincture of Cordyceps militaris, a species of fungus revered for thousands of years for its' medicinal qualities. Dual extraction tinctures are considered the "gold standard" of liquid medicinal mushroom extracts. This is because the process extracts both the alcohol and water-soluble medicinal constituents, leading to a more complete final product. While there are many methods for making tincture and speeding up the extraction process, I wanted to make a video of a simple yet effective method that anyone could replicate at home without the aid of special equipment.

Great demo. Two things I would add 1) this is not "just as good as any supplements you'll find online. " It's the very best of all the supplements. This is exactly why I started cultivating. There so many supplements that not only don't do a proper dual extract method, but many never even bring their mycelium to the fruiting stage, while some (Like Paul Scamets) just colonizes grain and dries up the grain and mycelium and grinds that into a powder. 2) The alcohol extraction process will take between 6-12 weeks if it's not ground down to a powder. I was glad to hear your mention ultrasonic. I learned about that and that's a real game changer if someone needs a tincture in short time. As always, thanks man

You can take off the alcohol with heat,but it does act like a preservative,otherwise you have to refrigerate it,yes it will work with any fungi plant based material

I wonder if you could add glycerin as a presevative? I've seen it used before in old chemist recipes for extracts and syrups used in tonics to preserve the VOCs of what they are extracting and to prevent botulisim from forming. Something to look into for sure.

Good morning, thanks for your content. I’m new to the game and you’ve helped a lot. After transferring some grain to bags last weekend I decided to try making a LC from the mycelium left on the inside of the jar and as far as I can tell after 4 days it has been successful. I’m planning on testing it out on agar this weekend. Thought you might find this interesting. Be well

With those crockpots it's around 200F. Looking for a hot simmer, not boiling.

How often and how much of the tincture do you ingest?

The general recommendation I've read for a maintenance dose is 2 tsp. twice daily so that's what I do. Martin Powell's book on medicinal mushrooms from 2010 has a lot of info on extraction dosages.

somebody did a test comparing the cordycepin content in mycelium rice versus in dual extract and found it to be much higher in the mycelium rice, what do you think of that?

Lots of research out there on the medicinal benefits of fruit body vs. mycelium. Pretty strong opinions on both sides too. I don't keep on top of it really but a good place to discuss it would the Cordyceps Growers Facebook Group.

That has to be for you to decide as a parent, but you could also discuss it with an herbalist. I am friends with the people at Healing Spirits Herb Farm in Wallace, NY. You could discuss it with them. They are great people and very experienced.

Hey man! Quick question about your sawdust methods. Can you inoculate the pasteurized un-supplemented sawdust spawn blocks you make with liquid culture?? I'm trying to figure out ways of less transfers/less room for errors. I mostly grow in bags, but this summer I wanna do some outdoor beds which I know sawdust spawn is preferred for, I'd like to maybe get away with using no grain at all in the process? I do have sterilization so I could supplement the sawdust with bran or soy, but it would be amazing to just do the pasteurizing method you do, and go straight in with liquid culture! Would that work? Or would it be super slow or any other caveats you think I'd run into? You're the best bro! 🍄💜

Liquid culture right to sawdust can work, but it's not recommended. It takes forever for the mycelium to take off and colonize because of the lack of nutrients. This means contams are much more likely and you're going to wait forever. That grain spawn intermediate step is really the way to go imo, but you can make "all-in-one" bags where you have a layer of grain in the substrate with an injection port on the bag so you can shoot right into the grain and then the mycelium will spread to the sawdust.

@@RenegadeMushrooms ah I see, so really when you get sawdust spawn it has some amount of grains in therenmost of the time hey. Appreciate it fella! I was already thinking about trying some all in one bags and possibly a no soak so so boil so simmer tek where you just put the right amount of water in on the dry grains, substrate at field capacity and PC everything together, not sure it will work but I like the idea!

I know grains are usually 90 minutes and supplemented blocks are 2.5 hours, if everything is all in the one bag do you just run it 2.5 hours then? Or is it better to do un-supplemented blocks and just run for 90 mins with the grain in there?

Does this taste like alcohol then? Is there a non-alcoholic version? Also would this work with sclerotia?

It does taste like alcohol a bit yes, but you can mix it with fruit juice to take the edge off. It's not that bad. Yes, it would work with sclerotia.

I've read and heard that vegetable glycerin can be used to extract the oil based compounds (terpene, triterpenes and terpenoids) instead of alcohol.

@@ScottWConvid19 I've also heard of people using glycerin, but I don't know anything about it's effectiveness relative to alcohol.

@@RenegadeMushrooms It makes sense, as glycerin is an emulsifier and actually blends both water and oil, so in theory, glycerin alone should be able to breakdown the cell walls of both oil based and water based compounds. I personally prefer the dual extract method, mostly because I know that thinner, less viscous liquids penetrate better. I'm also a critical thinking carnivore, so I'm adverse to "vegan alternative" anything! Vegansmism has a certain mental aroma that wreaks of cognitive dissonance. 🥴
