Does medical writer need high level math for their career?
@TheBoldPhD4 күн бұрын
@user-ss5dy8jyl most people in the profession likely took classes like algebra, calculus and statistics in college. Of these 3, statistics is the one most medical writers may use more frequently. Therefore understanding that will be important. But I am also not doing math equations all day.

The one I took is by a group called My Book Therapy. If you search for them online, you will come across their various course offerings. They focus heavily on romance however and so if that is the genre you want to write, then you'll find them helpful.

Oddly, since academia is filled with people who just genuinely like to learn: this is true of a LOT of people who go into university. I only know two people off the top of my head that still have a career that’s directly related to their degree and we’re all in our thirties. Most of us have switched at least twice 😅

I live in Melbourne Australia and know a couple of people with PhD's. Their PhD's are in useful things (Engineering and Neuropsychology). Even though their fields of expertise are totally different. They both have one thing in common, they both HATE BEING CALLED DOCTOR. At work I have met others with PhD's, (mostly in various forms of engineering) and they all feel the same way about the honorific. I dunno. maybe this is a reflection of what is generally an egalitarian society? Without exception all the PhD's I know or have met, all believe the honorific should be reserved for people who have a PhD in some form of medicine, (with the possible exception of Dr Dave who has it on his drivers licence but only to get out of speeding fines, which is the only other way it is acceptable in Australia). Anyone in Australia who isnt a doctor of medicine and insists on people calling them Dr is considered a narcissistic WANKER!! Tell me Gerty, what is your PhD in??

You may have to go deeper into this situation. Adjunct instructors significantly contribute to lowering the higher educational system in the USA. They are cheap laborers willing to work in the worst conditions with no prospective advancement. Why: because they are taking the jobs of PhDs. They are like strike-breakers. The recommendation given here from this person is absurd. He should say: if you have a master's degree, go and find a job according to your credentials. English teachers, for example: if you have a master's degree in English, get certified, and find a full-time job according to your credentials, i.e., in a high school. Do not contribute to the destruction of higher education. A Ph.D. has another level of training significantly better suited to teaching graduate and undergraduate classes; in general, university students are interested in learning from a real university faculty, not from the same teacher they had in high school. All the adjuncts in my university (more than fifty percent of the faculty) are now trying to get the same benefits as a full-time faculty. A full-time faculty lucky enough to get such a position must have a PhD simply because they spent much more money and time preparing themselves than someone with a Master's did. If you don't have a PhD and want to teach and contribute to improving the educational system in the USA, go and teach in a high school. Plenty of them are desperately searching for teachers, so don't take jobs you don't have the credentials for, forcing Ph.D. to search for jobs in other areas.

I love all 7 of these. I’m definitely using most of them already. However, I need to be more consistent on posting content now that I want more coaching and consulting opportunities. Thank you for this video and the newsletter this week that directed me here. ❤
@DrCrystalHarris3 ай бұрын
First of all you are so right about career coaching being less accessible that it should especially for academic jobs and graduate students overall. Second of all, I’m offended that someone who take the time to comment of a professional woman’s make up in a space like this (or at all really). Very inappropriate and says more about their own insecurities! You are an expert and should be treated as such. 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
@TheBoldPhD3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Dr. Harris. Yes, I really wish more universities and colleges would invite more resources in helping students prepare for job markets. It's key! I also agree that it is inappropriate to comment on a woman's make-up. But one lesson I have learned on the internet is that people hide behind anonymity to say anything. These days, I just let it roll off my back because it's not worth fighting. Thank you. Have a wonderful Saturday.

So true. I was also guilty of this as an assistant professor but I think it’s the culture of the academy. We are told we are not quite good enough in so many subtle ways.
@TheBoldPhD3 ай бұрын
Yes, the academy tends to beat us down that way. It took me a while to climb out of it too but nowadays you can tell me nothing! LOL.

My caveat to this is…. As long as the job that’s pays the bills doesn’t also steal your joy. So many people are miserable in their jobs and there can be a middle ground. Btw, I love your content and have to go back and watch more. You’ve been missing on my feed for a while. ❤

@jamie-leeranjit47083 ай бұрын
Honestly, I am trying to figure out my next steps but I do have factors to consider in my decision. Do you offer any consultation or one on one talks?
@TheBoldPhD3 ай бұрын
No I don't offer 1:1 consultation however - someone asked me a similar question just last week at an event I was speaking at. I always tell people to count the cost of quitting - how it will affect not just you but perhaps the people around you who may have made sacrifices for you or people who depend on you for living. Once you make peace with that, investigate career options you can get into once you quit so you have money that can help you develop your passions into skills like I share in the video. From there, I feel the world opens up.
