Nice video my friend, i have two questions, I would like to evaluate the feasibility of the project concerning the price of salt. Is it necessary to change the salt after a certain amount of time? What periodic maintenance care should be taken?
@RyanMake
@RyanMake 11 күн бұрын
There is a benefit to changing the water completely if it is not filtered well. Better filters allow for a longer, useful life. I ended up doing longer filter cycles for maintence and I also shock treated with peroxide but I will need to work on a maintence recommendation based on the commercially available float tanks.

Hey Ryan. Firstly, great stuff man. Real comfy video you made here. Second is I have a recommendation for you. Theres an 80s movie called Altered States, centered around float tanks and tells an interesting tale about a mans quest for enlightenment. In regards to your question, I would probably integrate a red light to the equation, Ping pong balls cut in half over the eyes, radio static lightly in the background. Also, could the tank incorperate a vibrational feature? Could the tank vibrate at a certain frequency to assist in the float tank benefits? Thanks for humoring an aging psychonaut. Much love man

I want to get to the point where I have one of these as a bed and use it to see if I can achieve astral projection, as well as see what happens when I sleep. I use my local float centre tanks to experiment with hacking my own mind and psychological structure for healing and reconfiguration (think Dabrowski’s Positive Disintegration model turned into a self hacking practice). I think I’d want a large one, like the size of a Queen or King bed, so that I don’t touch the sides- I tend to cartwheel in tanks, I have no idea why, so being in a space where I can do that without hitting the sides would be brilliant. This is a goal of mine for this year 😊

@@RyanMake you want a venturi effect to eject the hot gasses more focused out of the barrel. That means you have to narrow the opening at the top and create pressure at the bottom/inside the barrel instead of trying to create the airflow at top with fans. If you try to create the draft with fans at the top of the barrel you will almost always create an astable turbulent vortex (as shown in the video ). Looking at the venturi,/Bernoulli ideas of pressure and fluidity you can build a firenado barrel with much more stable vortices.

@RyanMake Жыл бұрын
Hello Deborah I would think a small pool would work as long as it is big enough for you to stretch your body out. It sounds like you would use the pond liner to cover it while you are not using it. I would be reluctant to think the deck is designed to hold a lot of weight so that would be good to check into before you put a couple hundred pounds or water and epsom salt in a pool on it. Instead of a cover I was thinking you could spray paint some swimming goggles black to give you the perception of darkness I would recommend trying to do a groupon or something for a commercial float tank first to make sure it is something you find beneficial before commiting what little space you have.

Hi Ryan! Great video! My flat is on a second floor. I'm not sure of the load limit of the floor, but in any case I'm aiming to build one that uses as little water as possible and lightweight materials. I'm the same height as you. Do you think your tank is the minimum size for a good float without touching the walls, or could you get away with making a shallower one, perhaps with a narrower area around the legs? And could the lid be made shallower too, to reduce the volume of humid air building up? Final question - is the filter truly necessary if one uses it about 4x a week and showers before getting in?
@RyanMake
@RyanMake 2 жыл бұрын
These are all great questions. I have been slowly working on a plan that would use extruded aluminum for the frame which would dramatically cut down on the weight. One of my open projects is looking at the typical density of different parts of the body to determine where I could make the tank shallower. I am not sure I would recommend making it any narrower because it would be hard to not drift towards the sides. You could make the lid shallower. It would come down to your level of comfort in small spaces especially with heavy air from the humidity. Regarding the filter. Having something that grabs stray hair and skin cells is a must and then having something like UV or Ozone to kill the microbes is important. There is no way you could shower yourself clean enough to not need a filter in my estimation. Thanks for your questions. Let me know if you have more
@Finn-pe7uj

@@RyanMake Wow, I wasn't expecting such an in depth answer, thank you bud! Those are very interesting ideas. I love the way you think about design optimisation, the Colin Chapman of float tanks! Mapping the floating depth of the body is a good challenge. There are plenty of horizontal-shot photos of people floating, but I haven't found any in high buoyancy/salinity water. Maybe you could put blunt objects of various heights underneath you when you next float, swap them until they barely miss touching you, and by process of elimination find the minimum clearance of the tub then add a buffer for no-contact floating. I guess another variable is whether you prefer floating arms-by-side or having enough room to put them behind your head. But there's potential for enormous weight and water saving, and decrease in filtering and salt cost. As for weight of the tank itself, I would imagine some of the support struts could be substituted for nylon webbing strung between the frame - I've seen this used to create solid platforms for minimum weight cost for applications like aircraft, or climbing sleeping platforms. The wooden support panelling could be substituted for fibreglass or a lighter grade of ply (with a sealed coating or laminate). Hollow aluminium sounds perfect for the frame but it's pretty expensive for a budget build. I wonder how well strong PVC piping would do? In the east, thick bamboo is used in construction as load bearing scaffolding. Maybe laminated heavy duty dense foamboard? Plenty of people have built beds and furniture out of it, and foam can be cut with a wire to achieve organic shapes which could suit your idea of optimising depth. Using arches and triangular shapes in the frame would give more strength for your buck, and if the water weight decreased the frame could be a lot less substantial too. I wonder what would happen if you plugged this into 3D generative design software and allowed it to calculate its version of the ideal frame? Unfortunately I don't have access to that kind of thing. If it's not going to be loadbearing, the lid could be made of a very light rigid material like coroplast panels (free from local campaign signs) which is great as it's very tough stuff and not a good substrate for mold. With insulation on the top to trap a lot of the rising heat and a water resistant sound-absorbing panels, like a solid foam or plastic egg-crate (perhaps treated with an anti-mildew solution). I think plastic egg crate would be a very cheap, mold resistant option. How effective is your lid's soundproofing? An advantage of a lighter lid would be a much easier opening and closing, eliminating the need for heavy duty hinges or pistons - magnets on a pole or a clever balance and extension limit could hold it in an open position. Ah okay, I'll definitely include a filter, thanks. Here in the UK, energy prices have shot up - what do you reckon is the easiest, most efficient option for filtering? I don't care about achieving absolute pristine water. Thanks for the ideas and the great tutorial!

How do you regulate temperature and how often you have to change water to prevent bacteria from? Also, how long will that tarp last soaking in salt water?

@RyanMake 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Jessica. The water bed heater I used has a thermometer and thermostat for controlling the temperature. The tarp on the bottom should last for years. The tarp.on the top I have replaced with corrugated plastic paneling because it looked and worked better. As long as I run the filter with the UV light everyday and shock treat the water with hydrogen peroxide it lasts for a long time. I had to decommission the tank for a while before I reached the useful life of the water. Great questions.
