I am with you, Susanne! In such a connected world it's really hard to simply be unavailable for some time...In the beginning I had a fear of missing out if I did not check my phone constantly. Luckily with the time I learned that being without technology recharges me and I can be a better person when interacting with the outside world 😍

Yes, a state of flow is the most (the only?) resourceful way of learning BUT Distraction is a powerful learning tool. If you disagree how about this: what will you learn if you are STUCK ? Does it help to bang your head against the wall ?? A practical example: imagine you misplaced a key in your room, you spent 5-10-15 mins looking for it, you know it's there BUT you are stuck, you just can't find it. Feel free to waste another hour and getting 100% frustrated 🤪 ....OR get distracted: go out of the room, take a cup of coffe, come back in 5 mins AND all of a sudden your key has found you 😃
@DrNanuli3 ай бұрын
Thanks for this thoughtful comment! Agree 100%. I think what you are referring to is a creative break. We need to sometimes make some adjustments when we are stuck, e.g. go for a walk. The cool thing is that while you are taking this break your mind is still working on the issue at hand and often by the time you are done with the walk you have the solution 😎

Another absolutely great video. I tend to do the easiest task first, with the idea of getting rid of them, but sometimes upon completion, I realize that they had very little or no importance at all. I loved the A B C D E method, which I will try right from tomorrow onwards.

Thanks a lot for your comment, Janne! Music, in general, tends to divide people. So does background music - some like it, others don't. Personally I'd like to see KZbin introduce a feature where the viewer can toggle the music on and off like one can do with subtitles. I will put more time into finding relaxing music. Please share if you have any recommendation or examples where it is done right.
@JanneHaavisto2 жыл бұрын
@@DrNanuli In my humble opinion, the general best practice is not to use any background music when you are talking. You may use music in intro, outro, or when you show video clips and are not talking at the same time. If you still choose to use continuous background music throughout your video, you should at least tune the volume very low, when you are talking (and it makes more sense to mute it altogether, than have this low 'noise', I think). A tip here is to gradually increase/lower the volume during transitions, so that the changes are not too abrupt. What makes background music worse in your situation is that your microphone setup is not as good as it could be. The reason some people use background music, when they are talking, is to muffle their speech a little bit. They think it makes them sound better, hiding some pronunciation errors or vocal hiccups. It is precisely this muffling effect that makes listening to the information more difficult, and does a disservice to your message. Any good example I could show you would have no background music during talking. You have a good speaking voice, trust it to carry your message.

I think it's impossible to have study or work breaks especially where you're working in a restraint society. And for international students who also double as workers in low paying jobs the issue of procrastination is replaced by outright despair. Even study psychologists worsen the situation because they only discuss how to balance studies and work and nothing more. Sadly the student who's forced to work more with their hands and never their brain will not make it well in both indulging and restraint societies.
@DrNanuli2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Sharon, for your insightful comment! I can totally relate to what you are saying. During my Master's studies I worked in a restaurant as a waitress to support myself. And I agree that what you describe is a very common experience for a lot of students, having to constantly balance myriad of jobs and responsibilities. I believe most of us have been in the state of despair, me included. What helps me in these situations is to remind myself of all the things that I am grateful for, all the opportunities that await us and that this is a very brief life and I should do my best to be joyful and enjoy it. How do you deal with such situations?
