At least you covered the OG version and not that hideous remaster. Fable is the only game in the series that feels British (it's predominantly English in this game), the sequels were very much an Americanised interpretation of Britishness and I couldn't stand it personally.

Probably one of the best video games I’ve ever played and definitely pushed me into fantasy RPG’s as I got older without this game, I don’t think I would be into the elder scrolls or the souls games this game holds a very special place in my heart

All the lies the developers told at every convention it didn't hold up the day of release.. go back and listen to them hype it. You'd think they made skyrim.....

I still play this through on og Xbox every few years. The visual style, the music, the simple and intuitive combat...it's a great game. 20 years ago, Peter Molyneux planted an acorn that has grown into a die-hard fandom.

Yes absolutely. I replayed it on PC just last year. The story is still tightly told, characters may be one dimensional but that just makes them stand for something. I'll always love that first walk through Dark wood I love watching traders walk through maps with bandits giving you tons of opportunities to intervene or even just watch. Combat is alright still. Play this

the fact that your most frequent criticism about a 20 year old game is that it's a bit outdated is quite outstanding

I know that there's a lot of "judging it by today's standards" speak going on but uhhh.... those same complaints were voiced back in the day. That Fable's childhood stuff was too short, there weren't enough of the consequences to your actions promised beyond a simple good/evil choice that was pretty cartoonish, and the game being super short. All those points were raised back in 2004 in criticism of the game.

I think most people being children when they played it made them blind to that when they look back on it now.

And I was born in 2000 and paid 3 dollars for the game in 2012 knowing nothing about it and it was fun. But yeah I would be pissed too knowing all the things that Peter guy says

Subbed. Fable is one of the greatest RPGs I have ever played. I would say it definitely still holds up. When I was a kid, there wasn't the lost chapters for a while, so when I played through both versions I was blown away by just the voice changes for Jack of Blades, but the first time I touched down on the Northern Wastes was mildly terrifying as a kid, you come across a giant sealed door that guards an old, abandoned, haunted graveyard where an entire town was wiped out in an instant. I still love this game, I do hope that the newer Fable will look to the first game for some inspiration. Character building mechanics were the best in the franchise, and overall it definitely felt a good bit less janky than Fable 2 and 3, which both make it seem like your character is running on ice constantly.

Honey wipe my schedule. A youtuber I haven't heard of just uploaded a half an hour long video essay about a game I haven't played in 15 years. Fable was really my intro to RPGs as a kid. If it weren't for this game I never would have fallen in love with oblivion and realized how impactful games can be on someone.

DOS3 should have a frendly orc faction. Most of them are just generic goons in the first game and all of them are just ghosts in the second.

The graphics of this game - particularly lighting and shadows - made this one of the most technically impressive games at the time. It's njot something one could understand by just watching the gameplay or cutscenes. At the time there was only Splinter Cell that was kind of like this game, and in the same year as Half-Life 2's release, this game felt like a marriage between the two. You also had Doom 3 that year, which looked and played similarly but from a survival horror perspective. That was also the year that the "Let's Play" thing started becoming popular, largely due to the jump scare reactions to Doom. Escape from Butcher Bay may have been a little less accessible for people looking for something else at the time, but also contended with some of the biggest games of all time in the same year, otherwise it may have found some longer strides for what it was. I remember that its visuals were one of its most notable aspects at the time, and it's easy to see why when looking at some of this gameplay in dimly lit, retrofuturistic corridors and such. This game was the equivalent of Alien:Isolation at the time, but you're the predator.

Started playing DOS last week. Its difficult at first and i had to save, ALL THE TIME. Learned that its different of BG3 where combat can end in 2-3 rounds. In DOS, enemies are so tanky that to win fights you have to cc the enemies rather than just straight up damage and fights last il to 5 or 6 rounds. But once i figured that out it was quite fun. Challenging and rewarding. My only gripes is that there's just too many traps and puzzles that can insta kill your party if you're not paying attention. And even if you did manage to see the trap and try to deal with it or avoid it, the ai tends to path wrong or you misclick causing your character to run over it instead, causing a wipe. if you just finished a fight beforehand and forgot to save, you're gonna have to do that fight again, which can take another 7-10 minutes. Also the orcs and undead sound british which i found weird.
